This year, the GCO is a B Tier, 2 day, 4 round tournament. 2 rounds at Lenora Park and 2 rounds at Alexander Park. No swapping courses during lunch!

Juniors will play Saturday only and will play their 2 rounds at Lenora. Of course Juniors can always sign up to play another division and still get any junior awards Plus whatever they win in the division they play,

Check back here, @GCODiscGolf or GwinnettCountyOpen.com for details as they become available.

Reminder!

You DON'T need a PayPal account to use the online sign-up. It will bring you to the PayPal site where you can enter a Credit or Debit card.

Please help the tournament out with sponsorship and by spreading the word around. Running this over 2 days is a big risk and I had to work extra hard to get permission to do it.

The main website (Gwinnettcountyopen.com) failed an upgrade and I have to rebuild it. However, I don't see any problems with the order page (gwinnettcountyopen/cart)

Can you please try again? If it fails again, please let me know what part of it failed, I'm able to create orders and get to the PayPal express payment page...

Thanks

The layout of stuff on the page is a bit . . . unexpected. The "Add to Cart" button that you click to move on beyond the first screen is at the top of the page, so once you've filled out everything, you have to scroll back up and then click it.

Thanks Ryan, I'll try to adjust the page to remove that friend link and move the Add To Cart button to a better location. If you still have trouble, send me a PM and I'll arrange another way.

Hey Gerrit, you should go create a facebook event for this so people can access it and indicate they are going, it makes a great central location for all the players to post and whatnot about the tournament...

Thanks Dave, I did that a few days ago, and am hoping people will pass it around. I have several discgolfers on Facebook, but not all that I know. I also created a Google+ event. Feel free to invite me to Friendface; I've never used the invite button. I'm a Luddite when it comes to social networks...

I'm still waiting fro the combination of twitter, youtube and Facebook which they will call YouTwitFace,

Can you tell us which parks the divisions will be playing on Saturday/Sunday? Specifically, would my son, Justin (Rec), be playing a different course than me (Adv Masters)? Just trying to iron out some transportation issues. Sorry if its posted already and I missed it...

It's not posted yet Craig. I wanted to see how the divisions were breaking out before I decided, but I will do it fairly soon. It's about 25 minutes between parks, so it shouldn't be a problem. I can also get him a ride before, after or both,

What course layout will the divisions be playing? Specifically INT. I assume any ADV div will play the longer layouts at both courses.

Int will play the blues at Alexander and probably the same layout as Advanced at Lenora. If necessary for ratings, they may play hole 2 differently at Lenora. I will know for sure by the 3rd and will post the hole information then.

I am considering a couple of basket moves between rounds at Alexander only. If the logistics work out (I need a couple of vollunteers each day to switch them) We can move 6, 11 and 17 (mid to long) between rounds each day.

If your thinking of playing every hole the same but one for advanced and intermediate what's the point might as well leave it all the same because that's a hole were there will be more scoring separation then all others which makes the ratings higher for advanced and won't hurt them as much.

Resurrecting Craig's concerns from a while back, and also acknowledging that the logistics for coordinating this event are a challenge in itself, but...

I can identify at least four Juniors who signed up for Rec whose parent is scheduled to play the opposite course. Since we're not switching parks in between rounds, I'm missing how the rideshare offer would apply here. Getting the kids to their park and then having to drive over to the other park before the first round is where problems may arise.

Any thoughts from the other parents who may have to deal with this?

Thanks,
Alan

Yep. Most of the juniors over 13 are playing Rec (in fact, they're the majority of the division right now). At least with playing both rounds at the same park each day we don't have the mid-day transportation issue, but getting them there and then getting back to our course for the first round each day is going to be a challenge, as is getting them lunch (we can pack a lunch, but unless they schlep it around with them the first round not sure where they're going to stash it -- ordinarily, we'd just keep it in the car, but . . .).

If I can't think of a better solution, I may just have to drop back to Rec. I've been avoiding playing the same division as Ari when possible, but it may be the only viable option this time around. Plus, I've played so poorly the last two GCOs that it's probably where I belong anyway.

You could leave a packed lunch at Tourney Central if you like.

I could also have sandwiches, chips and hot dogs on Saturday and order Pizza on Sunday. I'm happy to provide that at my expense for any "stranded" junior Rec player.

No reason you should have to absorb the cost -- I'm sure we could collectively work something out if we can find someone who can handle the on-site logistics (picking up and distributing lunch, etc.). My wife and other kids aren't able to be there either day, which is why I'd be concerned with having a solid plan (either collectively or individually).

Agreed about the cost, that's on me as it ought to be.

And while Scott makes a valid point about feeding the youngsters, the greater logistical issue still lies in getting father/son to their respective parks the morning of.

Seems to me that if we can identify someone (or a couple of someones) who's able to drive to the course for the Rec division, amongst those of us who're affected, we could meet at the shopping center at Reagan Parkway and Scenic Highway, roughly equidistant between the parks and relatively accessible to Reagan Parkway, Scenic Highway, and Hwy 78, and split up the cars, drivers, and passengers to their respective destinations, without adding dramatically to the time required for everyone to get where they're going.

I'm serious about the lunch offer. I'll have it available and you can have your kids participate, or make other arrangements.

I guess I still don't understand this timing issue. Check-in lasts an hour and the trip between parks is 20-30 minutes. We'll even have people at tournament central 1/2 hour before check-in so you really have 90 minutes. I won't leave Alex until everyone is picked up.

On Sunday there will be someone at each park at least an hour before round start so again, you can drop off, drive to the park and still have 30+ minutes to warm up. We can Carpool the kids to the awards ceremony (which I'm hoping to have at a more central location).

I'm not trying to be argumentative. I really want to help alleviate any problems as best I can.

This thread needs a little political nod:

GVV for President of the United States (a bit more organized that our current options)
Matt Dollar - The new "Keith Johnson" since he is running more tournaments than most anybody.
Keith Johnson - The new IDGC Superintedent since he has retired from GSSS and the job is open...

Then, disc golf could rule the land... :ugeek:

I know that you're not being argumentative, and that you sincerely want to make things work for everyone. I just know how many things there are to deal with on an event this size for the TD, and the more we can work out for ourselves the more you can focus on all the other stuff.

It's not that getting the sub-driving-age kids to the other park and then getting back in time to check in and warm up is impossible; it just means that much more to worry about, and having to get an even earlier start than otherwise. With Lenora being at least a 50 minute drive from Roswell, and Alexander at least 45, and allowing at least 30 minutes to drop off and make sure things are set and then getting from one park to another, allowing time for getting breakfast, packing lunch, etc., we're looking at needing to leave the house no later than about 6:30-6:45, assuming sign-in begins around 8. That means being up at 5:30 or earlier. For the Dickersons and anyone else coming from that part of the world, they're going to need to start even earlier. Sunday will be slightly later, but not dramatically.

When we're both piling all our stuff in the same car and going to the same place, we don't have to worry as much about each of us having everything we need and nothing that belongs to the other, since we can both use the car as a base of operations. We just have to be more careful and deliberate about all of that in this case.

To be clear, I'm not arguing for you to change anything about the course assignments or scheduling or anything. Just trying to work out among those of us who're affected what's going to do the most to minimize stress and potential problems.

Gerrit,

I signed up for the PDGA and got my PDGA# 55872. Is this tourney going to count for a raiting since I signed up before getting my pdga number?

Have you posted the layouts that the various divisions will playing? If I missed it in this topic or the GCO site, let me know and I'll go find it.

Yep. It'll count. You can also call the PDGA and ask then to add any other tournaments that you played this year, I think.

It looks like I lost that when I lost the website last month.

Lenora:
Intermediate, Rec and Juniors play short 2.
Everyone else plays long 2.

Alexander:
Rec plays reds, everyone else on the blues.

How much grief will it cause you if I wanted to move to a different division? I'm looking at either up to Advanced or down to Rec, as either would resolve any transportation issues for me and Ari. At this point, I'm thinking Advanced, partly because I'd rather not be in the same div as him, and partly because with the way I'm playing lately, I'd be less embarrassed by finishing DFL in Adv than out of the cash in Rec. If there's a date by which a definitive decision would make your life easier, let me know and I'll try to make up my mind.

No grief at all. There has already been some movement and there will probably be more. Any time up to and including check-in is fine, assuming neither park fills up.

Fantastic event as always. Had about as much fun as you can have finishing dead last. Thanks to Gerrit for doing his usual outstanding job, and his family for putting up with the disruptions and distractions that go with having a TD in the house. Likewise to all of the sponsors. Personally, I appreciate having had the opportunity to play with guys I don't usually get to be in the same group with -- thanks Ryan Dickerson, Ben Bolton, Mark Spaugh, Michael Lee, TJ Petito and Andrew Lofstrand for being great guys to be on a card with. And to everyone in Advanced, you're welcome for the extra few points you picked up thanks to my being in the field :D . Already looking forward to next year.

Did something happen to the advanced scoring? After the ace throw off I had not cashed, yet the scores show me at 14 which would have cashed. Poth said the cards were in.

Yep. Thanks for pointing that out. I had a wrong last round for someone by 3 which moved a few people around. It's fixed. I will go through them all tomorrow and compare the upload to the cards.

No, sorry I wasn't clear about when I made the mistake. The cards were right. I typed a score wrong wrong on the spreadsheet. It is fixed it now. Reload the results page and you will see yourself correctly tied for 15th.

Okay, thanks. It was a nice event. Not so much the scuffle in the second round, but the disc golf and hospitality was great!

Jamie,

I have been there and asked that. The PDGA releases player ratings about every month or month and a half. The next one will be on the 13th of this month, but the GCO happened too late to enter in ratings. Your first official PDGA rating will be the next one that comes out after tomorrow if you are a PDGA member. However, you can pretty much average your four rounds ratings from the GCO and get your rating. I know they drop the worst round ratings in the average but I'm not sure how many rounds you need before they begin to drop the lowest rated rounds.

Seconding everyone's props to Gerrit and all who helped to run this event, smooth as butter and so nice to be finished with the second rounds/awards while it was still daylight!

Should also point out, if it wasn't shared enough verbally, that the two-day tourney was a much-appreciated upgrade to the previous format by everybody that I spoke to. Credit due to whoever came up with the idea!

Thanks Alan. From the very first day I had lunch with Rand to ask him how a fairly new player would go about running a SuperClass tournament at Lenora (he quickly talked me out of that), I wanted to start small and grow to a B-Tier. It was great to finally get here.
2009, 72 player cap, everyone at Lenora, then everyone at Alex. 1-day C-Tier
2010-2011, 144 player cap, both parks running at the same time. 1-day C-Tier (both years sold out, though a couple of people didn't show)
2012, 144 player cap (first non sell-out) 2-day B-Tier
2013 ??? (probably the same, but hopefully a sell-out)

Actually, if there's still a red x showing next to a name in the "current" column in the results, and there's no PDGA number showing in that column, then you either are not now and never have been a PDGA member, or your PDGA number isn't associated with your name in the results uploaded by the TD. For Lost in the Woods, even players who joined and got their PDGA numbers just a few days before the tournament showed as current when I uploaded the results if I had their number entered correctly.

In case there's any confusion -- if you're not a PDGA member and you play a sanctioned event, you pay an extra $10, and the PDGA behind the scenes does assign a number and begin keeping track of your tournament scores/ratings. However, no one, including you, gets to see that rating until/unless you actually do join the PDGA.

They don't necessarily drop any of your worst rated rounds. They do drop any rounds that are either (a) more than 100 points below your current rating, or (b) more than 2.5 standard deviations below your current rating (like, say, my GCO round at Lenora last year  ). The ratings calculation includes all your rounds for the most recent 12 months, and if there are fewer than 8 rounds it continues to pull in additional rounds from more than 12 months ago, newest to oldest, until there are at least 8 rounds. The most recent 1/4 of your rounds are double-weighted so that they count more than older rounds. More consistent players generally won't have any rounds dropped -- Matt Dollar, for example, has 87 rounds from the last 12 months used in his current rating, and no dropped rounds during that time. I, on the other hand, being a model of *in*consistency, have two out of 20 dropped. Both were more than 100 points below my rating at the time.

This should be a very long multi-paragraph post in order to do justice for the help I received over the last month and especially the weekend. But probably no one would read it, so I'll do bullet points.

The Disc Stalker Ambassadors and Lawrenceville Animal Care Center for their title sponsorship.
and in order of my memory only, not the amount of help...

Greg Pothier for course cleanup and 10M circles (with Al Fetta and others)
Ed and Vicki Jacob for their running of the Lenora Venue
Tim Petrea and Brian Lang for assistant TD duty at Lenora
Brian Lang for immeasurable help loading and unloading, helping with scores late Saturday night and other help
Steve Adams, Scott and Karen Prandy and others for payout help
Mikey Curtis for Lenora course prep (and all-year maintenance, guy is a work-horse)
GDGO for ALL the help and new trees/basket &
Barry and Keith for scorepointe help and loan of said scorepointes
The guy that reminded me to move baskets before the second round!
Scott Prandy for taking care of the trophies ( I think I still need to pay you for those)
Scott and Jason for taking care of the water
GCPR for fixing the #5 tee at Alex and adding fill around the others before the tourney
All Fetta for lugging stuff around Saturday night
    All the sponsors
I'm sure I forgot someone, so THANKS

TD Report Submitted. PDGA Payment made.
Stats:

Pros - Paid out $2355 (161%) $743 added cash to Pro payout
Ams - Paid out/players packs $5070 (138%)

Interesting happenings.

Josh Childs breaks Lenora Tournament record by 2 throws with a blistering 39 ! (he hit chains on 2 of the 3 holes he didn't duece)
James Cole wins Open by 1 throw. Also wins the PRO CTP/Putting challange
Haley Reese threw within 14" of the pin for the Am CTP/Putting challenge, then bests the guys at putting and wins!
Tim Bell takes the ace pot throw off for $121 / Cody Britain is 2nd closest for the remaining $41
Gerrit runs his first B-Tier on 5 hours of sleep from Friday night through Sunday night. Survives.
Civilian Casualties on Hole 2 at Lenora in round 4: 0
Civilians that said they could stay on hole 2 because they have "a masters degree from Florida State University": 1

Thanks to all the players. It's a lot of work to run these things, but you make it worth the effort.

It is funny to some now but one disc golfer in particular was extremely rude and I was hoping he would get his butt whooped. The round 4 drama was taken to a whole entirely different level by this particular disc golfer and I was walking over to let him know and then he left. The non-tourney players began playing during lunch and I can see how they thought nothing was going on at the moment and began playing. If he said the stuff to me that he said to the players not in the tourney, he would have been down for the count.

I was at hole 5's basket 40 feet from it all and was honestly aggravated it was taken to that level and embarrassed for him and the tournament. It was actually appalling as opposed to funny.

Bobby,

Can you give me the details in a PM? It's too late to do anything about it for this year, but I'd like to know in case word gets to the parks department. If it's as serious as it sounds, there are potential options through the PDGA as well.

I can do that if you'd like. I'm not at all trying to get anyone in trouble or raise the issue. I personally thought it was overboard and thus don't really think it is a laughing matter.

So this was about the Hole 2 incident at Lenora. For some reason I thought it was something different at Alex. There were some people on Hole 2 impeding play. They were not responding well to the park staffer who asked them to leave.

It wasn't a pretty incident and was probably not handled perfectly by either party, but no one was hurt and we should probably let it lie at this point.

Thanks to all who practiced restraint and helped resolve it peacefully.

I submitted the report on November 13th. Apparently there was something missing because it didn't get in. I have call into the PDGA and I will get it resolved. Unfortunately they don't back fixes into the current ratings so it'll be the next update.

My apologies.
