Perkerson C-Tier 2/26/2012

Postby jritger » Sat Nov 26, 2011 1:12 am

2012 Perkerson Park Open Feb 26th, 2012
PDGA C-Tier
5th Annual

Registered Players
# of Spots Remaining = SOLD OUT

Schedule
Check-in: 7:45 - 8:45am
Players Meeting: 9:00am
1st Round Tee-off: ~9:30am
Lunch: 1 hour from last card
2nd Round Tee-off: ~1:30pm
Should be finished by 5:00. Looking for help with scores to expedite payouts, let me know if you can help.

1 day, 2 rounds of 20 holes:
Layout = the 18-hole temp course layout + 2 new layout holes. Par = 68.
Rec plays short tees both rounds.
Open, Adv & Int divisions play long tees both rounds.

Lunch
We'll have Dem Boyz BBQ cooking on site.
Lunch menu:
Main meats are ribs, pulled pork, chicken, and sausage. Sides are baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, and green beans.
The plate options will be a ribs ($10), BBQ pulled pork ($7), chicken breast ($8), and chicken dark meat ($6). All plates come with two sides and a drink.

Saturday Feb 2/25/2012: Course Workday & Practice/Doubles Action:
9am-12pm = course tourney prep & new course installation workday. Bring cutting tools. This is significant help to getting a permanent course as your volunteer labor counts $20/hour towards a CASH grant we're applying for to fund the installation of concrete pads.
1pm = Doubles action on tourney layout.

5 divisions: Open, Advanced, Intermediate, Recreational, Womens Intermediate.
Note changed format -- lower entry fees, no disc included -- but you can still get our standard champion disc for an extra $12. All divisions pay the same low entry and receive the same players pack with custom mini and custom trophies for top 3 spots for each division. This is a non-traditional, trophy-only event. Your entry fees directly fund the donation, less expenses.

Side Action: There will be significant additional day of cash divisional side action, back by popular demand.

Entry Fees: I'm trying a new concept where early registrants (who make life easier for the TD) are rewarded with lower fees. That's right, wait around and pay more.

Pay by date = Paypal funds received or check in hand. Add $1 to order if using Paypal to cover transaction cost
By 12/31/2011 = $20 entry. Add $1 if Paypal ($21).
By 1/31/2012 = $25 entry. Add $1 if Paypal ($26).
By 2/25/2012 = $30 entry. Add $1 if Paypal ($31).
Day of registration = Hope not to have any availability, but it will be $40 entry, cash only.

Registration
Step 1 = Fill out this form to submit your registration. http://tinyurl.com/7q6nqg8
Step 2 = Pay me via Paypal (http://www.paypal.com). My Paypal is jritger@gmail.com, add $1 to cover transaction cost, and be sure to select "Send money to Friends and Family".

Long sleeve t-shirts cost $15 each and I can custom order the sizes up until a week before the event. PM/email if interested.

Rather than including the discs in the players pack, they can be purchased separately for $12 for champion plastic.

*********************

This remains a charitable event, hence the low entry fee and trophy only payout. Proceeds this year will primarily be used to install the permanent disc golf course in Perkerson Park, but some of the donation will also benefit the Sullivan Center. We are trying to raise upwards of $5,000 to fund the installation of concrete teepads, signage and recompense trees.

The Sullivan Center is a 501(c)(3) organization located 2 blocks from Perkerson Park whose mission is the prevention of homelessness, poverty and economic inequality.

We have raised approximately $7,400 in the last 4 years of this event for the Sullivan Center and Friends of Perkerson Park. We raised $2,221 in 2011.

**********************

Thank you ATL Scott for picking up the 1st hole sponsorship. 17 remain.

Since nobody has signed up yet and because I can, I've changed the entry fees. They are reduced by $10 and you will NOT receive a disc in the players pack per past events. You can however purchase the disc you would have received nearly at cost ($12). I'm not far enough along in planning this to know what discs -- but I'll get some type of custom order so you can let me know exactly what you want before I order them.

Wow, thanks for stepping it up with the sponsorship guys. We have more sponsors (4) than signups (3) so far, which is amazing. (hopefully everyone waits to signup and the entry fee will increase, providing even more sponsorship!)

The event is shaping up to be very well sponsored -- thanks to everyone so far who has taken a tee sign sponsorship, I'll get a list up soon.

Just a friendly reminder that the entry fees go up by $5 at midnight tonight. Thanks in advance for those procrastination donations!

Based on progress at the workday today, I think we'll be able to include most/all of the new holes for the icebowl. Likely on dirt pads, but real baskets.

Forgive me if this is posted some where but where are the new locations in relation to the old layout? Up the hill to the right of 7/8? :shifty: Looks like I may be around for this one...

layout isn't finalized yet. right now, looking like the only holes that don't change at all are #11/#12. #6/#10/#14 minor changes. All others very different. Most new holes will be in the wooded area up the hill from 7/8/9.

Update:
I'm capping registration at 76 people; 24 have signed up so there are 52 spots left. This has sold out the last 4 years, so don't get shut out if you want to play. Next price escalation is Feb 1st, when the entry fee goes to $30. Awesome level of sponsorship thus far. Hoping to have artwork done soon and will have more updates on the disc order once I get more signups. If you have indicated that you want a disc when you signed up, I will email you.

I need help installing the course. The deal with the city is that if they purchased the baskets, the Atlanta disc golf community would install the course. If you are playing in this and local to the area, please consider helping at a workday. We'll be holding workdays every Saturday 9am-1pm between now and this tournament. The tourney layout is TBD depending on how much work we get done. Note that through matching grants that we are pursuing, each hour of volunteer labor is worth $20 ... so if you worked 5 hours you'd realistically have raised $100 in cash that will help pay for cement pads, signage, etc. We could potentially raise up to $25,000 in matching grant money that could roll-over into future course development projects.

Additional workday info will be posted here: http://discgolfatlanta.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3697

updated players list... pdga will be updated tomorrow

Haven't counted, but looks like Open is the biggest divisions so far! We're just past the halfway point with 37 spots left. Remember that entry fees escalate in 2 days, so if you pay 2/1 or after it's $31 to get in.

If you renewed AFTER 5PM last MON (JAN 23rd) you will show current THIS WED or THUR when the PDGA does the weekly update.

It's been the same way for at least 8-12 years now.

The only other reasons are credit card failures or incorrect address that delay the processing until they can call and work out that situation and then the MON 5PM thing kicks in again.

Any other questions should be directed to the 800 # that is on your membership form as that is the best place to get answers.

A few updates:
1 - Entry fee has escalated to $30 check / $31 paypal.
2 - 30 spots left right now
3 - I'm getting some more guidance about cutting trees, and it's looking unlikely we'll be able to have the new course ready for play by tourney day. There is quite a process to cut any trees larger than 4 inches ... Basically we have to replace them with an equal number of caliper (diameter at chest height) inch trees. The arborist must approve each tree prior to cutting and post a 15 day public notice, then the recompense has to be funded prior to cutting. There is a good chance we'll be looking at upwards of $10,000 in tree recompense to plant new trees ... if anyone has a hookup on free/discounted trees, let me know.

At any rate, we'll likely be able to install some holes and hopefully some baskets at the ADGO workday on 2/19, so the PDGA tourney will be a mix of old and new.

Similar to all past events, I will need some high quality temporary baskets. Please PM/email me if you can bring one.

26 spots left.

I picked up one of the baskets today and they look pretty sick. We will likely begin setting pins at next Saturday's workday and get into more construction type stuff (like building up the teepad for #1 long).

Huge thanks to all of the sponsors thus far!

Players list updated, there are 18 spots left right now. I will have a waiting list after it sells out. If you are interested in getting a t-shirt, need to let me know (if you didn't when you signed up) by Feb 12th.

If anybody can make it out to this Saturday's workday we will be installing 11 sleeves! Just got confirmation from Alan Sandidge (huge thanks!) that we'll have all carpet teepads for the long positions, and most of the short positions. These will get installed during the big ADGO event on Feb 19th and will be the teepads until we can get concrete (likely late April).

Also ... we are getting all 19 of the baskets tomorrow and will this event will be played 100% on the Gateway Titan baskets. Some will be permanently installed, others will just be brought out for the event. These will be the worlds most secure baskets after we are done with modifications (welded nuts/bolts, concrete filled tubes, trailer hitch locks & rebar re-inforced concrete holding the pins).

Still not sure what the layout for this tourney will be, should know more by this time next week once the layout is finalized.

Rush of registrations today and there are 9 spots left right now. I'm adding a Female Int division ... 4 in that division so far. Over 20 Open players !

Course layout finalized today and it will be a part 60. Not necessarily for this tourney, but for the permanent course.

What Dollar said ... payout = $0 (trophy-only + lots of free CTPS), as always. All of the entry fees are feeding the donation to the Sullivan Center (~30%) and the course installation (~70%), which is already underway.

If you'd like your own age-protected division that doesn't have trophies, I can arrange it.

Now there is divisional side action to be had ... but that's not officially part of the event, so bring some extra cash.

Just picked up two sponsors in the last 30 minutes
Matador Cantina ... these guys rock and stepped up BIG again for 2nd year in a row, and have great food/drinks in Grant Park/Glenwood Park and Oakhurst -- http://www.matadorcantina.com
And for the 1st time, Thinking Man Tavern -- one of Decatur's best pubs http://www.thinkingmantavern.com/

I have 1 spot left right now. Waiting list will be posted here.

Wait list:
#1 = Mason
#2 = Matt Orchard
#3 = Matt Versola
#4 = Slim Pickens
#5 = Drage

Since it sold out, I'll honor the $30 price for anyone getting in on the wait list. 2 registrants have already told me they might not make it, so if you want on the wait list, just fill in the registration form and you'll be recorded.

Will the course be open prior to the event for a sneak peak? doubles on the 25th?

All of the baskets will likely be out there, but in the permanent course positions, which won't necessarily be playable. Won't know until after the ADGO event this sunday how much of / if any of the new course will be playable for this tourney; depends on turnout & what gets accomplished.

If we can't use all of it, it's tough to use part of it because it screws up the flow, so there is a decent chance it will be on the temp course layout using the permanent baskets, with those baskets just stuck into the ground using the extra sleeves.

We just walked the course today for approval with the arborist and there are 12 trees with ~75" in diameter that cannot be cut for a couple of months, until we have funds to replace them. Not sure if that makes the woods holes invalid/unplayable until we clear out the smaller trees -- hence the lack of decision yet.

Here's what we'll have:

Ch Dest (a lot)
Ch Sidewinders (a lot)
Glo Ch Teebird (a lot)
Glo Ch Starfires (a few)
Glo Ch Bosses (moderate amt)

Tried to get blizzard but they aren't custom stamping it yet.

Check back later today and I'll post details about start times / etc ... gotta think it through.

One major update: the layout for the tourney is finalized. We had crappy weather for the workday/ADGO event yesterday with rain & drizzle all day, so the turnout was lighter than expected and while we still made a lot of progress, there is a long way to go to make the permanent layout playable.

Layout will be 2 rounds of 20 holes. 18 from the temp course layout that most of you have played, with 2 new holes (a par 4 and a par 3) that will be called 9a and 9b. After playing hole 9, the par 4 along the creek into the corner, you take a right and head up the hill and play both holes before crossing the bridge to get to hole 10.

This means that we'll be able to fit in 2 more groups, so if you are on the wait list now, you'll likely get in.

Also importantly, we'll be having the regularly scheduled workday next Saturday Feb 25th 9am-1pm to prep the course for the tourney. Need to get the two new holes completely playable. We'll also be bringing out all of the permanent baskets. I cannot stick around to run action, but if somebody wanted to run it, they could setup the tourney layout using the metal baskets and run doubles.

More soon.

Top post updated with more details

This Saturday 2/25/2012 there will be workday/course prep from 9am-12pm. We'll be laying down carpet, signage, OB rope for the tourney. Course install items are installation of permanent baskets and continuing to clear out the 2 new holes that are in play for the tourney ... and additional cutting on other new holes if there is time. I don't think Park Pride is coming out so bring work gloves and cutting tools with you.

We have some leftover burgers from the ADGO event that will be grilled @ 12pm. They are limited in quantity so only enough for those providing volunteer labor.

@ 1pm(ish) ... GT Chris is running doubles action on the tourney course layout. I'll let him post details about buy-in.

If you have time, please come out early and get in some volunteer work before practicing on the course.

For everyone interested in practicing the course Saturday, I'll be running action starting around 1pm. We'll be playing the complete tournament layout, all 20 holes.

I'm leaning towards dubs, but if enough people want to play singles we could do that. Buy in will be standard Perkerson action, $5 round with optional $1 ace pot and four $1 CTPs.

great job again john! this course was almost to big for my noodle arm, and this was not even the new and improved lay out. new baskets are indistructable and great catchers, but i did miss the sweet "ching" that i'm accustom to. maybe that's why i did not 2 that many holes.....yeah that's why

Had a great time on Sunday, it's too bad that the current course could not be the permanent. I have never played a more visually pleasing and challenging course. Too bad I had to drop after the first round!

Great tourney! Thanks Ritger!
Love the baskets...probably the best possible choice for that area of town.
I'll definitely miss the layout...but I'm sure the new one will be awesome, can't wait til it's finished!

its not that easy ok. from what i can assume that would invole a person faxing a peice of paper with scores next to players names and ratings. me personally i would rather dig a ditch. thats just my opinion

Sorry for the delay, I've been travelling and have not had any time. The whining and repeated asking does not speed the process up, it's just annoying ... so as much as it pains me to say it, I kind of agree with Bootsie. Have not checked these yet, they are straight off the scoreport.

Here are the detailed scoring stats.

Sorry ladies, I'm lazy and working off a template and didn't have time to add another section. Hole 9A played tougher than expected, but I think it will move from solid gold to solid blue with some clearing and teepad leveling. Most interesting score that jumped out at me was Connor VV eagling #13 in rd #1 and carding an 11 on it in round 2 for an 8 stroke swing and carding the lowest/highest scores of the day on that hole. Only eagle and ace of the day were in Rec division. Scores just went in to PDGA.

We raised $2,000 on the head, of which $680 is heading to the Sullivan Center, and just over $1,300 feeds the course fund. 5 year total raised through this event is $9,800 ... so thank you for the support.

In other news, there will be a workday @ Perkerson this Sunday @ 1pm. And we were named a finalist for the grant $$ today, which would mean dual concrete pads and premium signage by summertime (if we get enough volunteer labor to qualify for it, hint hint come on out and help !! ).
