Correct. A two-day, two course event was discussed with the ERP folks, but was eventually scratched. Have received offers of support from these folks, however. Hopefully someone will step up to be the spotter.

Yes. Keep in mind that "regs" has yet to play in all-long positions in either casual play or at GSS#1. The long tee on #17 has also never been done before. In other words, "regs" is the longest-possible layout at Wills since the redesign and I didn't want REC and INT players to lumberjack too much on #12 and #14, as these two holes can really impede the flow if folks are criss-crossing the two fairways too much.

Anyone considering playing INT can also move up to ADV if you want to play the stretch layout both rounds.

No real way to get around the PDGA non-member fee and still get the sanctioning, the online registration (and its fee) and most importantly the insurance that City of Alpharetta requires. ChrisP used to help Keith out with fee-less GSS registrations, but that's no longer an option as Solstice is now out of business.

Tentative Top Dogs Safari Layout (new #3 hole added)

  • Hole #1: 9th tee to #12B basket (long pin) - both sides of creek in play
  • Hole #2: 14th tee to #16 basket - both sides of creek in play
  • Hole #3: Path behind #9 tee to #3 basket
  • Hole #4: Super-4 tee to #18 basket - playground and ballfield side of path OB

Marshalls will hold pedestrian traffic along path and parking areas with courtesy signs until all five players have cleared. Based on this I decided to add my favorite everyday safari hole (when nobody is on the path or #8) - #9 tee area to #3 (old #17) basket using #8's fairway. Besides, it's only fitting that the Super-4 tee plays on safari hole #4.

Junior Divisions Added
Based on interest from some of the younger, up-and-coming players that have been playing Wills recently, I've decided to make both boys (MJ2 - 16 and under) and girls (FJ2 - 16 and under) junior divisions available for play at Dogfest. The online registration page has been updated accordingly. Junior players will play from the same tees as the REC divisions. -ChrisF

Thanks to Jason and Bob at Disc Caddie Golf for sponsoring Hole #18 at Dogfest! Disc Caddie gets a sign at #18 tee, a thank you in the program and the Dogfest hotstamp Champion Glow Wraith that Bradshaw picked up last week at Wills dubs.

Plenty of hole ($25) and disc ($20) sponsorships still available!

DOGFEST HOLE LAYOUTS (Please read - Several Changes from GSS#1)

NO TWO-METER RULE

Discs "clearly and completely surrounded" by water in designated OB creeks or similarly surrounded by other designated OB areas (such as concrete) are OB. Normally I head to Nashville to spend Easter with my folks. This year it looks like they may be coming down to the ATL. Let me see if I can finagle it and Justin and I will try to make it. Justin would love to play out there with you! I'll let you know...

Came straight from Houston today (MONDAY) and was back at work until after dark - baskets will be moved by dark TUESDAY unless some unforseen tragedy happens.
Sorry they didn't get moved after doubles last WED as I thought I would do, but Lorelei needed to get some stuff for her trip she had to Savannah with the school - so I took her to do that instead and then I left straight from work to the Airport on THURSDAY.

I hope the fallen tree didn't mess up the hole playability for either position.

Looks like there's a potential for at least three Juniors so far. That's enough for a division. Please go ahead and register if you are playing. Thanks.

Many thanks to PizzaVito for their catering sponsorship of Dogfest. PizzaVito is a local favorite of mine. I'm partial to their Sicilian pie, but they have awesome, authentic NY-style thin crust pizza and loaded Calzones as well. PizzaVito will be taking lunch orders and payments during check-in and will deliver their delicious wares to tourney HQ at the conclusion of round #1. Here's a menu to get your mouth watering...

If you'd like to go ahead and pre-order lunch, just send a PM. You'll just have to pay onsite during check-in.

To All Wills Dogs, Puppies and even you Mixed Breeds out there that plan on playing Dogfest:

Please DO go ahead and register, as it will help take a lot of the guesswork out of the payout scenarios - Sponsorships generating added cash are now begining to fall into place, but it's nearly impossible to project realistic payouts until we're sure that we'll be at or near full registration (72) as was the case at GSSS#1 in February. The goal is to set the top spots at or near GSSS#1 levels. As a once-a-year event, Dogfest doesn't have the flexibilty to slide sponsor money between events to cover shortfalls.

Dogfest will feature the most-challenging, yet fair layout possible at the new Wills. The short tees for REC and JUNIOR divisions as well as the marshall/spotter posted between holes #12 and #14 should also increase the speed of play. Right now INTERMEDIATE is scheduled to play the first round from the short tees and the second round from the longs. I'll defer to the consensus of REGISTERED INT players as to whether this remains the same or goes to two rounds short or two rounds long. Anyone who plans on playing INT at Dogfest should go check out the short tees (already in place) and throw a few drives on #9 from the concrete pad to see if you're up to clearing the OCEAN (aka creek) on your drive. If not, your options would be to (a) take your chances on the recently-cleared right side of the creek (which is not OB), or (b) vote for two rounds from the short tees, where clearing the creek on #9 should be no problem, but will require a turnover shot to make the alley leading to the B-pin position.

Don't forget that there will also be lots of extra events for players, such as the P-I-G putting contest, the Top Dogs Mega-hole Safari (featuring the return of Super-4's tee) and the Texas Hold'em tournament, which follows the awards ceremony. Thanks in advance for registering early. It will certainly go a long way toward making my first TD experience, and the tournament, run smoothly. -ChrisF

Baskets are moved and all are now in Event positions for the Dogfest. Logs are all that is remaining from fallen tree - all branches were moved this evening - Chris will be sawing the fallen logs to manageable lengths for ease of removal from edge of creek area at a future date.

I checked with the Alpharetta Rec and Parks folks when I first heard about the Dog Walk event and they assured me that it wouldn't conflict. That's the joy of having a course layout that doesn't cross the jogging trail any more. They will be long gone by the time we hold up joggers/walkers with our courtesy signs for the two Safari holes that will play over the trail.

I will, however, be inviting any of the dogs that play poker to the Hold'em tournament. Just watch out for the American Bulldogs - I hear they cheat! (see Dogfest hotstamp) -ChrisF

Thanks to Shane's Rib Shack - Alpharetta for their catering sponsorship of Dogfest. Another local favorite of mine that rates five stars on both their Barbeque and their Brunswick Stew (not to mention Shane's fried Okra, which is also awesome). Lots of great choices including the signature ribs, huge chicken tenders and their new hickory-smoked wings among others. If you want the Mac Daddy of BBQ sandwiches for lunch, you can't go wrong with Shane's "Big Dad."

Shane's will be taking orders and payments during check-in and will deliver the tasty vittles to tourney HQ at the conclusion of round #1. Pre-orders also taken via PM, just pay up at check-in.

Thanks to Scott Walker for his hole sponsorship and for signing up along with Ari to play Dogfest.

Scott is sponsoring Hole #3 and Ari has selected a white Star Vulcan with the red Dogfest stamp as the hole sponsorship disc.

Tournament Discs Going to the Dogs - Get Yours Before They're All Gone

This year's poster pooches got together over the weekend to show off their wares:

Loki proudly displays his signature distance drivers: Champion Glow Destroyer, Champion Glow Xcaliber and Star Vulcan

Image
Cassie poses with her core "go to" set of discs: Champion Glow Wraith, Champion TL and Champion Glow Coyote (no relation)

While Loki likes all of these discs, he seems to be lookinig to the Star Vulcan for a that extra "D"

Cassie enjoys the variety of these three discs, but warns that "you have to keep an eye on that Coyote"

Play It Again Sports Roswell Is Inaugural Dogfest Title Sponsor

Image
......ROSWELL......

Store Website: http://www.playitagainsportsroswell.com/
Phone: 770-642-4880

Many thanks to Scott and his staff at Play It Again Sports - Roswell for their Title Sponsorship of Dogfest at Wills Park. PIAS has a long history of supporting Disc Golf in the Roswell/Alpharetta area, and has stepped up in a major way to help Dogfest grow into a permanent annual event promoting the sport for both current and new players. The store, which is located at the intersection of Alpharetta Highway (10800 - #180), Mansell Road and Houze Road (GA-140) in Roswell, sells both new and used discs, disc golf baskets, disc golf bags and other accessories. This, of course, is on top of their large selection of new and used sports equipment of all kinds.

Please patronize our Title Sponsor with your business, and don't forget to recycle your old sports equipment and pocket some change in the process. I know that there are four large containers of old soccer and baseball equipment in my garage right now that will be heading down to the Roswell location in the very near future.

We hope that Play It Again Sports Roswell's association with Dogfest will become a long-term relationship, which will continue to grow both the event and the sport in the Roswell/Alpharetta area for years to come. Thanks again Scott, and welcome aboard! -ChrisF

It's ON for Friday Doubles
Based on the poll results there appears to be enough interest to hold the Friday dubs round. Here are the particulars for the doubles event:

Check-In: 5:30-5:45 pm
$5 Entry Fee
Random draw for partners: 5:45 pm
Doubles start @ 6:00 pm

If you are running late, please call 678-733-0180 (no guarantees, but we'll try to work you in if you arrive in time to tee off by 6:00 pm)

  • Dogfest tournament layout and ground rules will be used
  • Optional Friday-Dubs ace pool wil be available
  • All players tee from long tees
  • Junior, Rec and Intermediate players may also take a free practice throw from short tees to prepare for Saturday
(then pickup disc and play original drive or partner's original drive)
  • Payout based on # of participating players using standard Wills Dubs chart

ADDED CASH IS ADDING UP

Major sponsorships have been coming in at a rapid pace, which have substantially boosted the Dogfest purse. Tournament CFRs are also starting to move quickly. All of these are signs of a successful first run for Dogfest as well as an indication of a healthy payout. The only thing that's missing is........YOU!

If you want in on all the Dogfest action, you need to sign up before things start getting tight. There is no guarantee you'll be able to register on the day of the tournament. The online registration will automatically shut down next Thursday (21-APR), leaving in-person, cash registrations as your only option. Cash registrations will continue through next Friday's doubles tournament and could quickly make the online registration list incomplete.

Cash registrations will also be accepted onsite at Flyboy this Sunday (17-APR) prior to the final Pro round of the Atlanta Open. One day in the shade at Wills should provide a soothing cool-down and recovery (for your body and your ratings) after your battles on the fields of Moseley and Flyboy. Have a great run at the AO, then come on back for some home cookin' at Wills.

Two Dogfest Hotstamp Star Vulcans up for grabs. One for the P-I-G winner. One for the overall Safari winner (or cash). No drama if each hole pays out. Super-4 to #18 basket should be the "separator," just as #9 might be in the C-Tier. Two $10 PGATSS gift cards to anyone carding a four on Safari #4!

P-I-G contest is free and open to all registered players and staff.
Top Dogs Safari is free and limited to the Pro and Advanced division winners. If we field less than four Pro divisions, we'll use the lowest scores from all Pro divisions until there are five players.
Hold 'em will be held off-site and is not an official part of the tournament. It will be tournament style until we get to the final table. Participating players will determine the terms.

Bring Used Discs!

We will have a Disc Golf Info table at Dogfest tournament HQ where we will hand out information sheets and answer questions about the sport and how to get started. We'd also like to hand out donated/used discs at this table to help get new players started (after the tourney, of course).
PLEASE DONATE A DISC OR TWOI know that most of us have an assortment of discs rummaging around our cars or trucks that we're not likely to throw anymore because they're too flippy, etc... These discs might no be so flippy for players just starting out. Please drop off a spare disc or two at HQ if you have any. Thanks. -ChrisF

I had a great time, a big thanks to everyone that had a hand in this event.

I had heard it stated as long as the scores were entered in April, this event would make the ratings update, but they need to be in by this Tuesday. Here is a quote from PDGA.com

"The next update to the PDGA Player Ratings will take place on May 10, 2011. The deadline for submissions for events to be included will be Tuesday April 26th."

Enjoyed the tournament -- great job Chris, and thanks to Keith, Brett Porter, Bob Pressley, Wes Campbell, and everyone else who had a hand in making it happen.

Results are posted on PDGA site, but looks like the Rec and Juniors were entered as playing the same layout as the higher divisions -- round ratings are the same for the same scores, (i.e., higher than they should be). I'm sure Chris will get that updated soon.

Scott:

You're right about the initial postings from today. The default on the PDGA system is to dump everyone into the first layout for all rounds. You must have seen the ratings in the 10-minute window before I switched out the layouts for REC and JR. The other byproduct of fixing this error is that there don't seem to be enough ratings-qualified players in REC and JR for the PDGA site to calculate round ratings. Once the final report is submitted and processed by the PDGA, the actual ratings should be generated for all divisions. I will make certain that everything goes in before this Tuesday to ensure that the ratings are included in the next ratings update.

Thanks again for your support of Dogfest.

A few players asked to view or copy their scorecards yesterday, so I've scanned them all into a PDF file, which is stored online as a Google doc. If you would like to view or download this file, please send me a PM and I'll be happy to share this doc through the e-mail account that you supplied with your online registration. If you didn't register online, please provide an e-mail address in your request. Thanks. -ChrisF

The final TD report for Dogfest was submitted on Monday, 25-APR, so the ratings should be processed and included in the next update either way. I spoke with the PDGA office on Monday and they confirmed that yesterday (26-APR) was the deadline. Looks like they've changed their tune since then. -ChrisF

Dogfest 2011 Summary:

Thanks again to Keith, Brett, BobP, Wes, our sponsors (especially title sponsor Play It Again Sports - Roswell) and everyone else who helped make the first Dogfest a successful event. We had a decent turnout, with 60 paid registrations and 59 players participating. According to the calculations in the PDGA TD Report we had a Pro Event Value of $1,305 (180% of entry fees) and an AM Event Value of $2,210 (184% of entry fees), with just over 50% of both fields sharing in the payout.

Next year's Dogfest is now in the planning stages, with results and feedback from the 2011 tournament already being factored in. Please provide your thoughts in a PM if you've got some ideas regarding how we can make next year's event even better.

Cheers,

ChrisF
