With the new year, there were lots of people signing up for their PDGA renewals which kept me running those all day - and with the Event being 40 days away, 1 more day to wait shouldn't kill anyone for this Event.

There are only 2 tee pad differences for the REC men and Intermediate women divisions - Hole 1 will play from the REC Concrete pad and Hole 14 will have flags just beyond the leaning tree the other divisions have to throw over from the concrete tee (this was going to be the original tee except we could not pour concrete within 25 feet of the creek).

The other 16 holes will be the same concrete tee pads for everyone.

As it gets closer, I will posrt the Hole by Hole descriptions as I always do.

12 (on the slope past the Magnolia tree) and 13 (100 feet futher back and slightly left) will be in the Alternate postions for the Event if you wish to practice them before they move at the beginning of Feb.

Some interesting stats about the signups to come tomorrow!

Ok It's tomorrow - so here are some fun facts!

1 ) FIRST ENTRY on New Years Day - and my favorite helper is now playing PRO!
2) 5 ladies signed up with Rachel no longer having to be the only female as she usually is.
3) First Event at Wills in over 7 years takes less than 5 days to sell out!
4) 10+ first time GSSS players - will they know the answer?
5) Keeping it all in the family - almost 25% of the players are - there are 3 father/son, 2 sets of brothers, and 3 significant other pairs who are playing - which is the most ever at any GSSS event to date.

6) Not so much to do with the signups, but maybe it does since the all 6 Events only sold 9 spots this year - so it could have been the main factor in low turnout - who knows?
A not so fun fact - First time in 6 years I won't be running a PDGA Sanctioned Event at my favorite ATL area permanent course (from the variety of designing options standpoint) and most everyone elses least favorite (for lots of different reasons depending on the player- it was either too long, too short, too hot, too many trees, not enough trees, too many open holes, too much OB, too much water, etc. )

I will post the hole by hole descriptions later this month, but for "general" purposes, water and beyond in all creeks will be ob with lines that will be clearly marked where water crosses in front, back and to sides of baskets (as in 2, 9,11, 13). The tops of the creeks will be marked where creek directions change, but on all parallel to the fairway creeks it will be water and beyond. The wash "channels" that do not contain water unless it is raining will not be OB.

Any discs beyond the path will be OB, the path itself will be IB, giving you another 10 feet of fairway to work with.

I'm hoping the rain and crappy weather ends soon so that I will be able to use the slope position on 12 as I'm planning and the rest of the work to fine tune the course can be accomplished.

Again this is subject to change depending on weather and what the park can get done in terms of getting fairway 13 levelled and filled with dirt as well as getting the mulch down on several of the fairways, both in and out of the woods that were already supposed to have been done before the end of last year - that keep getting pushed back because of weather issues.

FWIW, there was a crew out today cutting down some of the larger dead trees along the fairway for 11 -- holes 10 and 11 were closed. They also seemed to be cutting up some of the downed trees that were leaning across the fairway. Didn't go back out after the round to see what had been done, but if you've played Wills recently you should expect 11 to look at least a little different from the last few weeks.

Last time i was at wills there was a pretty big tree that looks like at anytime could fall right by or on 14's pad. Its already leaning just being held up by other trees.

It's not on hole 11 so it will probably be there for years.

At least the ones falling on hole 11 are making the easiest hole on the course easier.

And the good news is that they are falling in the middle of the fairway (3 falling tree incidents in 3 weeks) and the ones by the basket that will fall soon are both leaning AWAY from the basket.

I'll look at it tomorrow and let the park know.

Representatives from the Alpharetta Visitors and Convention Bureau and the Parks Department will be on hand at the players meeting - as well as photographers from the AVCB and Patch.com who will be taking pictures - so please be aware of your behavior and actions while at the players meeting and on the course. As this is the first Event there in several years and the people who were involved in spending the money to improve the course with new baskets and concrete will be on hand - everyone will be looking to see how it is received, so if you can please thank them for their contributions to improving Wills Park.

I already had it worked out with the construction foreman to have the fence be where it is now as when they first put it in it was on the edge of the pad all down the side and across the back 2 feet of the pad on the corner.
PLEASE DO NOT move or mess with the fencing!
It is a backhand turnover or forehand flick shot - neither which require running up form the back left corner any more than the length of the tee - it is only a 255 foot in length hole - do you really need more than a 12 foot and more than a 45 degree angle runup?

Sorry we had to bag before awards ended, I hate doing that but even leaving early we missed the first 10 minutes of the first period of the hockey game.

Hit 9 intstead of 4 - now fixed - REC will have ratings when they are officially done - not enough "Gators" had the rating minimum before playing Wills.

With an hour of anger and a handsaw after doubles at Central, Courtney's Alley was created on Hole 13 between 5PM and 6PM this afternoon.

Hopefully she will come out again sometime soon and let me know what she thinks!

Hey Keith, sorry to keep bugging you. My score is still not corrected. I think you may have me confused w/ Scott Rich. I am David Rich and I shot the 119, w/ a 65 in round 1 and a 54 in round two. I got eighth place. Thanks!

SSA Stats from 1st Event at Wills Park since redesign. Par 55 layout with Hole 13 long.

Hole 14 stats (the only Par 4) - and the one most people whined about before even playing it.
Open Pro Men - round 1 - 3.82, round 2 - 3.55, 3.68 overall
Open Pro Women - round 1 - 4.33, round 2 - 5.00 , 4.67 overall
Pro Masters - round 1 - 4.00, round 2 - 3.57, 3.79 overall
All ADV divisions - round 1 - 4.53, round 2 - 3.85, 4.19 overall
All INT divisions - round 1 - 4.69, round 2 - 4.50, 4.59 overall
ALL PLAYERS - 4.18 Overall

Event Stats show that INT and ADV divisions played almost identical from 1 round to next, PRO Masters are the only division to learn and improve from 1 round to next, Pro Open Men played over 4 shots WORSE from round 1 to 2 and overall they beat the old guys average by only 1 stroke.
