Camping area

Postby RBoz3 » Tue Jul 14, 2009 4:28 pm

What's the best / closest place to camp out the night before Meek's Madness? I've been told Blood Mountain was relatively close, but also heard that there are some RV / Campgrounds that are closer. Anyone help with some info?

Thanks

You can call the US Forestry Office which is near Meeks Park. The number is 706-745-6928.

Enota mountain retreat is 20-30 minutes away and is a really nice camp site with lots of waterfalls and hiking trails and relatively cheap to stay at with tent camping and small cottages, im making the trip soon to play at meeks and stay at enota

Vogel State park is not too far away. Good facilities.

Blood Mountain and Byron Reece (near Neels Gap) are both closed for overnight camping (bears). I'm camping in the the National Forest (free) right across the water from Meeks or at Helton Creek (off US-129 below Vogel). Send me a PM if you want more details or want to coordinate. -ChrisF

Recommending camping is about as difficult as recommending a good place to eat in Atlanta. There are quite a few options. Plus, locals give directions that involve turning left at the fork in the road where the dead 'possum is lying. I'll jot down a few, but don't hold me responsible if a bear, raccoon, or squirrel sheriff raids your spot...

Vogel State Park (20 minutes)
Lake Winfield Scott (30 minutes)
Enotah (25 minutes)

If you want tent camping without the comforts of a campground:

Cooper's Creek area - Blairsville-side not Suches side is less than 10 minutes from Meeks.
GA Hwy 180 - the section of 180 that runs from B-ville to Hiawassee en route to Brasstown Bald - many random campsites on the side of the road.
Helton Creek - As Chris mentioned, Helton Creek is nice and accessible right after Goose Creek. Goose Creek has nice cabins as well. I've seen folks camping on the banks of the lake right near Meeks as well. Not sure about legality, but the fishermen do it...

Verified last Saturday at the Forest Service office that the trapezoid-shaped piece of land (see map:http://fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fsm9_028893.pdf) off River Road, which is across the creek from Meeks, is legal. That's where I'll camp on Friday night. There's a pulloff on the right before the "no trespassing" signs and the fence that surrounds several private residences.

Yep, that's a good one. Jim-Bob Dockery and family are good hosts. I get a shit-eatin' grin just thinking about good times at that place
