DDamtree Doubles. :)

Christy and I are in, will sign up as soon as Master Scott says its good to go.

I will also inform all the couples that play mixed doubles with us at Alex about it and also will pimp it at the Nymphs tourney.

Best shot is what you describe as the Captain's Choice format - what the name is for what you describe in round 1 is best Disc.

Doubles play comes in a variety of formats. Best Shot, Best Disc (aka Best Score), Alternate Shot, Worst Shot.
Full rules and descriptions can be found here: http://www.pdga.com/search/node/Doubles+formats

Can I buy a disc (if approved) to support the Event even though I'll be in OH at the NT, or are they only for players packs?
It looks like it from your post, but I want to be sure as I would like to buy 1 or 2 depending quantity limits and price.

If not approved - maybe just drop a couple of cup sizes and you'll be ok.

Any other Pop/Pup teams have any interest? My son Justin (12 years old) and I really want to do it but we're hoping for some other pop/pup teams will sign up.

Ari and I will probably play. If Rick and Tom Greer sign up, though, they'll probably scare off the rest of the competition.

Yep, I'm 20. The pop is 59. We're considering entering pop/pup, but only if there are some other serious teams in the division. Is that looking likely?

Will have to wait for Andrew to give us a ruling on that one, which may take a while since he's at the US Am Championships in Michigan this week.

I would say that anything over 16 seems too old to be considered a "pup". If you are lookign for serious teams I would recommended you enter the AM division and leave the pop/pup teams to fathers and their younger kids. The Greers might also want to look into the AM field as well. Not sure about Tom's age, but I know he's got enough game to play Adv.

I'm pretty sure that Ari and I will play. Just have to clear it with my wife -- my 11 year old daughter is leaving for camp for a month the next day, so my wife may feel strongly that we shouldn't spend the whole day playing disc golf.

I am waiting on word from Courtney, her friend is holding an event at Meeks, as long as it isn't that weekend we are in.

If we can't play mixed we will buy a CFR and sponsor a hole or something.

I will also mention it to all the players at my tournament...we could get a pretty good mixed field.

Gotta support the Roswell club...they're some of the good guys. :D

Would like to play, but need a partner. Please review the qualifications below. :|
1. Promise to not hit the same tree twice
2. Profanity laced golf is not typical, but can happen
3. Have contributed to scores in the low 50s on Thursday doubles.
4. Have no problem saying "we'll use your throw"
5. Putting is usually good, approaches are usually good enough. drives... well,-- see #4
6. Wife has ok'd a day away from the house to play disc golf.
7. I bring my own advil and will bring enough to share
8. Can be persuaded to sneeze during an opponent's putt
9. Can often be heard muttering " %*^$% disc was supposed to turn "
10. Will consistently look for errant discs further than they actually went
11. Promise not to implode on the same hole you do

Operators are standing by. PM me to discuss an opportunity of a lifetime- or at least one hot day in July!

Sponsorship Discs through Disc Caddie Golf will be for sale pending Innova's approval of the stamp design. Reserve them while you can!

Is there any info about the CFR's? Types of Discs? Cost? Don't know if I can play but would consider helping with a CFR purchase... :?:

Pint glasses with tournament stamp have been ordered. Bob says that the CFR discs should be in soon, but until then how about this tasty CTP prize for hole #5 that I am putting up. No need to buy in. Everyone has two shots to win it. Brand new Innova Destroyer, 175g. The ribbon wraps around the edge to the bottom.

I'll let Andrew handle posting the list, but registrations are coming in at steady rate the last few days -- had several today.

Next week, I'll be in Ohio at Am/Junior Worlds, caddying for my son. So I'll probably only be forwarding registrations to Andrew once or twice a day, in the evenings, instead of as soon as they come in. So if there's a lag between your entry and the time you show up on the list, you can blame me, not him.

For those that were interested in getting a CFR disc(s) please send me a PM to reserve one -or- order one through the sign up page.

http://www.roswelldiscgolf.org/store/page2.html

There is one CFR Mako at 173g that has a pretty nice orange / red coloring. All other Makos are orange and blue. Katanas are mostly purple and orange. These CFR discs can also be purchased through Disc Caddie. Thanks Bob!

In honour of our Swiss and Irish heritage (Alex and myself respectively), we wanted to pay tribute in a clever way. Runner-up was 'Celtic Alps', but that sounded more like a death metal band (ie Celtic Frost). SIRAK just had that cool punch to it, as in 'Agent SIRAK, we have a mission for you' or 'Beware as you venture through the Land of Mordor for the evil SIRAK lurks there' or 'Dude, check out this new progressive-rock-jazz-funk-bluegrass-zydeco-klezmer-techno-pop-metal band named SIRAK!!!'

Plus, SIRAK has a decidedly European flavour to it (albeit with American pride and plastic). And though yes, it is a play-on words of a handy utensil and a defunct radical organization, I do not necessarily denote myself as a 'Republican' - more of a 'Liberterian', or in disc golf terms, a 'Chingafarian'.

In honor of my Scottish heritage and my Chinese partner, our team name is SAC Lickers. SAC for Scottish and Chinese, and we both play at Deerlick. We were thinking about Chode Yodelers for Chinese Homing Orangutans Diving for Eggs Yielding Old Diapers Exiting Loose Elders Rear Sides, but the mystery that would have surrounded that would have been excruciating for the readers of this board.

Send me a PM with proper formatting as I am not sure who you are. Online registration is also quite useful and makes my job much easier.

6 Spots Left !!!!

If you mentioned to me that you are playing but are going to wait until the day of to sign up, well... that may not be possible. Online registrations take priority over casual conversations and promises at a course. If you are positive you will play then send me a PM with the proper team format.

Waaaaaaaaayyyy too many BAGGERS in the AMS division - 21 teams, are you serious?!!?? And only 4 in the Open. I think a few of these baggers need to ante up and brew in the Open. Either that or may have to break up the AMS into 2 divisons, I dunno. TD's call :?

This is ATL Disc golf at its finest! Even in an unsanctioned doubles tournament with no 1000 rated players, all the Ams are still jerkin around with each other instead of playing DG. I've said it before, but I swear some of these guys either eat plastic or sell it on their ebay store. What a joke

How 'bout SPOTTERS for DTD tourney???

Postby celticbro » Thu Jul 08, 2010 12:08 pm

One suggestion, Andrew. And not to say that it may be necessary, but it could help the flow of the round more with virtually all teepads and holes being used up...

How about if we had a SPOTTER on a few of the holes? (ie 3, 4, 5, 6, 17). The fairways look beautiful of course, but all the kudzu and overgrowth on a few of them could present a problem on errant shots. Lots of time could be saved with tourney flow with a kid running down after a shot lying in some heavy growth areas. Have a 8-10" long metal stick with a flag on top to mark the discs.

Yeah I know, most of y'all would say 'Well keep your drives on the fairway and you'll be fine'. And I would say 'But you know every now and then, a drive or two is gonna land around the shule or growthy areas.' It would just be a convenience for all players, just as long as players don't get distracted by seeing the spotters up along side of fairways. I think they could manage to stay out of vision of thrower on pad for most part. Plus having somebody within your own group spot for the others would take too long and not be time-efficient.

Kids (non-tourney-playing 'pups' of course) can come along with their Pop (or Mom) and volunteer to be a SPOTTER. They would need to be at least 9 or 10 yrs old (too much younger, they may run down and pick up the plastic lol) He/she would be assigned a position on one of the spotter holes. And not to say every hole needs a spotter, but the ones with the kudzu and u-growth would especially be nice.

My SPOTTER hole suggestions would be:
1 on top of hill between #3 and #5 - great vantage point
1 in front of first trailer on #4, maybe a 2nd one in back around chip pile 60' to right of #4 pin
1 to left of #5 pin just before dropoff to #3, can spot errant hyzers falling down to #3 or overshots on 5
1 on #6 about 50' up and left of fairway (there is a bunch of shule on bottom left for black tee throwers)
1 on 17 around big growthy area down and to left of 17 pin
Each spotter would have a flag/metal rod to mark the discs.

Other than that, I can't think of really any other holes that need spotters (maybe for buffer between 9 and 16). So I would say 6-7 volunteers at most would be fine.

This suggestion may get consideration but not used. That's fine. All I'm saying is that it could not hurt, and could only improve course flow and save precious time in finding astray shots. I'll even make the markers myself.

So that player could spare babysitting time for mama or Nana, give either a nice break. Then reward the whippersnapper afterwards with a Five Guys burger or sumthin' - I dunno lol

Any other suggestions or offerings of their little ones for volunteers? Post em here.Thx :D

Spotting is easy. Spotting effectively (being where you need to be, out of the line of vision of players throwing but still able to follow the flight of the disc; having the mental discipline to stand there doing nothing for long stretches while still being alert enough not to miss any shots; standing around in the heat and humidity for hours watching the same thing happen over and over again; and keeping up with the locations of four discs at a time) isn't. I did it for four rounds over two days on Hole 14 at the Crucible for last fall's Flying Eye Am, and was nearly as worn out as if I'd played.

I completely agree that spotters are great to have, and that there are several locations at ERP where having 'em makes a tournament flow much more smoothly, but given that we haven't been able to get enough volunteers even for major events like the Atlanta Open, it's tough to do for a small non-sanctioned event. Having kids do it is problematic for all the reasons mentioned above, especially given the tendency for kids to get bored and let their attention wander -- at that point, they're not only not doing what they're there for, they're in danger of getting injured by the discs they aren't watching for.

Can't speak for Andrew, but I'm pretty sure he'd welcome any volunteers willing to help with spotting. Since my son and I didn't get permission from the wife to play until just after the last spots sold, we'll be around during registration and may be able to hang around and help. But if he lasted two rounds I'd be surprised.

First player from each group to tee off = spotter

If they throw their disc into the shule, they'll have time to look for it while spotting the other players throws.

Sure, I could see that. The first person to tee off would spot other discs thereafter. However, it would mean he would need to walk halfway up fairway to the side, just before his partner can throw. In that case, I could leave it up to the discretion of the group (or majority vote) if spotters would be necessary on a hole-by-hole basis.

And yes, I understand where you're coming from, 12StonesScott. Being a spotter for 2 straight, hot, humid rounds would be very tiresome, especially for those l'il whippersnappers. Maybe we could pitch out tents to shield them from the sun so they could peep their heads out  But I wasn't saying 4 or 5 yr olds would spot, they need to be at least in the 'tweens' to do a cumbersome task as to spot disc, run down, plant flag, then run back outta way - like a ballboy/girl at Wimbledon

Depending what group I'm playing with, I'll suggest it and if they're cool with it, that's good. Either way, we'll deal with it. It's not easy to find willing and patient young volunteers. Some things may be best doing ourselves.

Chop, I was trying hard to get my bro Rob to play, but he's apparently busy with other 'stuff' - oh right, he'll play Alex Dubs again as usual lol

But I thought since YOU and Rob did brew last week's Alex Dubs (-12 I think, good shootin') :) that he would jump at chance to join the Choppin' Crew. Tried over and over to convince him over 4th of July weekend - and over a hot grill of ribs and soppin' sauce, he said it was not to be. :(

I also had suggested J-Tokio a couple of weeks ago. So Rob and whoever definitely woulda brewed Open. (For me, I am not worthy --- to borrow from Wayne's World --- to be his tourney partner - despite playing about same amount of years, he's still WAY more consistent than me on average. I already had my pard-nuh anyway).

Plus, nepotism in disc golf can sometimes be more stress than what it's worth. We tend to cuss like sailors when we play lol. Granted we won at a Sat Lenora Dubs a couple months ago, but he did most the work from the tees - at least he let me putt first :D

And Chop, speaking of your team name, why don't you call yourselves the 'Tex-Arkana Razorbacks' ... or 'Hyzer-backs' in this case. Or to honour your chef abilities - simply 'Chop Suey'.

But your current team name sounds just fine too! Almost sounds like 'Capt Fantastic and the Dirt Brown Cowboy' or 'Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness'.

In other words, Chop and Jordan are a disc golf concept album ready to happen

Definitely! Great time. Sure, all of us coulda shot better ('coulda, shoulda, woulda' as they say lol) but overall, an A+ run tourney. Thanks, Andrew and Barry!

Water coolers were key on several holes - that bottled water can get warm pretty quick in 'dem woods! Great prizes, great folks as always (DISC GOLFERS RULE!!!!!) The #2 ace-off/CTP was all great laughs and fun!!!

It was awesome to meet Morgan 'Hop' and John 'Buzz' Yearty (the Pop and Pup of Team Savannah), representing that fine city. Super cool Pop with one cool Pup. The excitement of little 'Buzz' when he threw on #2 in the ace-off/CTP action was ear-shattering, as the kid skipped it 20' past the pin! Look out, this kid's gonna be brewing Juniors tourneys for next few years, and go even further in the future. He's got a great teacher and mentor in his Pop 'Hop' :D Can't wait to head down to play Tom Triplett near Savannah later this year!

Special shout-outs go to my partner 'Swiss Time' Alex - great playin' my friend :) , WHA and WHAIII, Chop, Tokio, Carlos (thanks for spotting on #4 - you 'da man!), Matt V, Cody (always great to hang with), Bill and Christy and other great folks of Team Alexander, old buddy Mark 'Steely McBeam' Dunn, Innova, DiscCaddie.com for the great DG swag, Innova, and of course Andrew and Barry for being great co-hosts!!!

Can't wait til next year. Now I'm gonna take a break from DG for a few days to rest my tired and worked limbs (and brain)

I couldn't stay around to see how it ended, but I got a phone call telling me that Alan Sandidge and Eric Jahoda won the playoff against Jeff Ruby and Matt Rudzinski after 12 holes!!!!! Alan and Eric took home a sweet set of trophies and some major Disc Caddie money. Wish there could have been a crowd to greet and cheer you guys after the playoff, but 12 holes?!?!!? come on already :)

Can someone point us in the direction of the parks survey that was mentioned in the players meeting? I'd love to fill it out.

Yes, there are indeed a few of the Katana's left at the store. Most are max weight but one or two in the 171 range.

thanks andrew and barry for putting this on. loved the layout of the event and seemed to be a very good turnout. had a blast!

**SPECIAL SHOUT OUT**

Also myself, taylor o'sullivan, and matt versola played a 9 hole round with team savannah after damn tree doubles: Morgan 'Hop' and John 'Fuzz' Yearty. Guys ill be the first to say it......this John Yearty, 11 years old, incrediable player. If this kid keeps with it, he will be big time. 11 YEARS OLD, i saw him hit chains on a very accuarte shot from about 95-105 ft. out of hole 3 of ERP. I asked the kid "what are your primary drivers?" The Fuzz responds with 4 discs, this blew my freaking mind........firebird, firebird, firebird, tee-rex. Oh and he likes teh tee-rex because " he can s it". and he was right, he man handled these stable discs. anyway just wanted to give a shoutout to our new friends from savannah! great playing guys and look forward to seeing you guys more!

I agree with you. My son and I also got a chance to play with the Yearty's during the second round. What a pleasure. They are great guys who are a lot of fun to play with. You are right, Fuzz is awesome. He hit a 75+ shot on hole three during the second round for the birdie like it was nothing! Hopefully we'll get to see these guys around more often.

Thanks to everyone who played in my tournament! Selling out and having 100% of the field show up is so nice. As my first endeavor in running my own event I felt it went very smoothly, and thanks to all the help I had I was able to focus a little bit on playing as well. All the comments I heard were how much everyone like the 2 formats and how fun it was. I was a big fan of them myself. Ace fund throwoff on hole 2 is always a blast to watch too. Perhaps there shall be a DTD 2011. Now I am going to go relax with some beverage in my DTD pint glass. Later!
