PPIC IV PDGA C-Tier 17-18 July 2010

Postby grease » Tue Feb 02, 2010 9:29 pm

July 17-18th - PPIC IV - Deerlick Park - Douglasville, GA

The PPIC is in full effect and sanctioned. This year will be a 2-day C-tier. Less money has to come
out for the PDGA that way. I will allow the recreational division this year as it broke my heart that
Wade couldn't play. The discs this year will probably just be Rocs and Aviars. I've had extremely good
luck with the Aviars over the past few years with them being extraordinary. Sign up will be available soon.
Sponsors always welcome. Thank you for 3 successful years. Let's make this one a 4th.

Recreational and junior divisions will be playing the Wade Selph layout. All other divisions will be playing the long tees.

Sorry Boots, the PPIC will be at Deerlick as always. One day I'd like to have
a two field tourney using The Oak and The Lick, but it won't be PPIC.

I don't understand why all of these "Pro" players hate The Lick so much. I'll be there Greasy. As long as I can cuddle with you in the master suite and eat 10 pounds of chicken parts like last year.

Wow, thats big of you for someone who had 47 cut-throughs in 4 rounds of golf at PPIC 3! The only things wrong with The Lick are the baskets(which single-chains are better than no chains!) and a random late tree(or 2) in the fairway or close to the basket.

dollar you dont like being 10 feet from the basket and not have a putt? not a slam on the lick i like the lick remember i won it . josh i was saying we should use both courses that way we get more people in. one thing i dont understand about TD's is that every tourney (thats worth a poop) fills up and is always left with a bunch of players not being able to play. this is bad business sense in my opinion why would you want to turn away any one. thats more money in the pot including my added cash!

Boots-
It is harder to run a tournament with multiple courses than it is to run on a single course. Usually, a tournament that is a "must go" is more because of the way it is run than the course it is on. More people and added cash isnt the huge factor it used to be. It is nice sure, but not the be all and end all. I really dont know of anyone who will question Grease's ability to run an event well, maybe if you stuck around to the end of one you would know that :P

Dammit man, you even quit coming to trivia :x

This is real important: the recreational division will be for 1st -3rd trophy only. They will be bigger trophies than everyone
else, but in the nature of competition vs. recreation, I thought this would work out.

Emotionally broken down, but I will make it. Strongly considering giving up tournament play and only playing casual. It sucks when you have supreme confidence in yourself and then shoot like I did this weekend.

Yeah I quit. I called the TD Sunday morning and let him know that I wouldn't be showing up for my final round. A little more graceful than quitting 3 holes into a tournament. I didn't cause a scene by displaying a tantrum and throwing multiple discs all over the course. Not justifying my quitting a tournament. Just saying that some could do it with a little more class.

I still don't understand why someone would quit. It's not like anyone pays any attention to the ratings and especially if you drive out of town for an event. Does it feel better to quit and walk away without trying or to actually finish and complete something you started?

I would submit that anyone that never quits a tournament really doesn't care. When you are really working hard and putting massive amounts into a game and it's not working sometimes it can be more than one can handle. I haven't quit a tournament in years but if I had been in Jay's spot I most likely would have quit as well.

Future bootsieism? But that would require bootsie to "not quit" for a period of time, so that won't happen. How did this forum get taken over by quiters? :P Great defense Jay.

Clearly you misread what I said or have problems with reading comprehension. Quitting every tournament you play in has nothing to do with what I just said. I could see it possibly happening once or twice a year for someone that plays 30 or more tournaments. Any more than that is clearly something else.

Is a Novice division being offered? I think that PDGA guideline 808.4(c) says that if there are 4 competitors that wish to play in the division it must be offered... WEAK!!!!

It is up to the TD what divisions are offered.

Why would you want a novice and a Rec division in the same tournament?

Seems like you would just be wasting time.

Bobby,
We can thank the services of Lynx Disc Golf for the quick attention that they have given to setting up
my online sign up. To be honest, I'd like to wait until Toccoa is over so as to not detract from their action.

No horse in the race because even though my rating is low enough to play NOV I always choose REC but look at tourneys in TN and at Meeks park.

12-15 players per division....would it be a 30 person rec field without NOV? No clue.

Agreed, if you care about performance it can happen. This is my take:

I have only DNFed one tourney:

Crucible
Middle of Final Round
Playing in threesome
w/Rachel and Sarah (Sorry Ladies)

now,
I did not throw a tantrum,
I was physically and mentally at the bottom of my game,
I did walk the round with them while they finished
and at that moment I would have picked-up no matter who I was playing with (I don't discriminate)

BUT all this being said ...

THAT is WEAK! or as Sarah put it "LAME"

Let's keep some perspective and have some fun!!!!

Looking forward to PPIC IV!

I'm doing $25 hole sponsorships w/ choice of PPIC disc. If you would like to sponsor more, please do
and we can make it multiple discs.

Does the online sign up allow just a sponsorship? Or is it a "pencil me in" type of deal ?
If it's "pencil me in", I'll take 2 holes & 5 BB aviars.

Will that work?

Also, this is a two day tournament. Is that 36 holes each day?

They're still there if not worse. Them Int. players will just have to put your money where your mouth is(after complaining about playing the short tee last year) and get over it, play around it, or play out of it. Maybe it will recede some by tourney time.

You Int. players? I am signed up as Advanced buddy! Besides I thought it was just funny how that has changed from last year's event.

Check the top post for player's list Jay!

Top post updated with players. Only 45 spots left. I must reiterate that the Rec division is for 1st place trophy only.
It's a big trophy, though, around 3' tall.

Are the layouts, OB, etc., for this tournament pretty similar to the GSSS layout that was posted in the Deer Lick Park thread a while back?

Yes, they are the same. I forget if GSSS had it, but there will be a rope in the ditch between holes 1 and two.
Left of the rope on either hole will be OB.

It wasn't - Keith would never have such a lousy idea on one of his designs. Should be OB for 1 and not for 2... 2 is a fun hole, but barely a fairway...

We just got back from Deer Lick...what a beat down.

Highlight was Christy's deuce on 10 from the longs. 60' thumber roller that hit the little ramp before the basket and flew right in, still completely vertical and stuck, we both looked at each other like :o

Got the trophies in Monday. All are flashy and worthy to bear the PPIC name. The Rec. trophy looks like a ride at Six Flags and will make the recipient proud to own. Get those sign ups in, they've been quite slow coming.

Calling out all you baggers!

Yeah I am talking to you Mashburn, Schatz and some guy from St. Augustine, FL who I don't know. You guys with your new, shiny over 900 player ratings. Step on up and play with the big boys in Advanced. Yeah you heard me! It is just $10 more. This barely over 900-rated player is calling you out!

They're afraid of not cashing! Their MO is similar to someone else who took that approach for years. Not talking about you Barry. Plus, Mashburn is having trouble selling eggs off the farm due to the new Wal-Mart that moved in, so the extra shims are hard to come by!

Might as well, Gomez is playing open  I'm saving my Advanced debut for Hotlanta if I can get in. Otherwise, I'll be scrambling eggs to earn some Primo Plastic dollars for my next disc fix. Barry is a division hopper like Vern anyway. Which hurts more: Me beating you in Advanced or playing the same tees with a lower score in Intermediate? The sting should feel about the same! I might just see you and Hugh in MA1

It only will take about $0.42 per day to save up the extra money. It's all about sacrifice.

I was at the course today. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the dirt piles on 16 are not going to be an issue. I thew from them twice and the footing is much better than last year. The ground is way more solid. The only concern would be footing due to the slope, but in all honesty you will have just as good of a run-up as you will normally have on your second shot on hole three. Barring a second flood I would not expect anyone to have to worry about sinking in the mud this year.

Now you've done it - Alex will end up turning NE and not only bring rain but also OIL so the rest of the course will be slippery besides just the dirt piles on 16.

Don't forget dubs this Sunday at 3:00. For those who would like to help clean up, we will be there at 12 to do some light trimming and trash detail. Bring weed whackers, clippers, and especially gloves. See you then!

I want the spot for my host for the weekend. Paul Hajek......I can't make it to dubs but can send you money via pay pal or carrier pigeon.

Grease recommended Gumbeaux last time, so I will be going back there Saturday night for dinner. Good food and Abita beers. I've also heard Hudson's BBQ is good. I've got my dinner squared away, but Soul Food Haven sounds a little shady or it could be that I just don't trust DD. May stick to the potted deer meat.

Soul Food Haven is the bomb. You gotta go there Sunday for lunch. You'll get free church with the meatloaf. You'll understand when you get there. Gumbeaux's is killer cajun. Closed on Sundays though.

Dollar has managed to clone himself in his basement laboratory (pronounced la-bora-tory). He hasn't perfected the process yet, though. Sub-Dollar will be playing South Carolina. Sub-Dollar came out less than perfect with one green eye and one wooden eye with an eagle carved on it, one leg shorter than the other(he tends to walk in circles a lot), and a severe drooling problem that causes him to spray when he talks. Plus, he only speaks French. Look for these trait if you think it's regular Dollar and aren't sure when you play South Carolina this weekend.

Just curious: some of the 1st place awards for amateur divisions is $200 and over. I know it takes a long time to pick out $200+ worth of discs, so I was offering the option of a Ching Chainmaster basket + whats left over. Just putting feelers out there and will go with the general consensus. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the input. Also, looking for someone on the West side of town who would volunteer to pick up and transport the spaceship. It would involve coming to my house initially to pick it up, breaking it down and carrying it away Saturday, and bringing it back to my house after the tourney Sunday. I have a tentative agreement to get it there, but the person who is helping me with it would be slightly inconvenienced. Help would be appreciated and rewarded(private stash). Can't have the PPIC without the spaceship! PM me or call me at 404-509-9010.

@ Grease, great tourney, had a good time.

@ the guy reading the radar map on his phone, who was pushing the TD to not resume the 2nd round because more storms were on the way, here is a link about how to read a radar map:http://www.ehow.com/how_2098903_read-weather-doppler.html Helps to put the maps in motion to interpret direction. Just drove home in sunny skies on dry roads after playing out my 9 holes.

yep, powder springs was fine and it was sunny the whole way home. I have a feeling that the guy pushing to have the round called was clinging onto one of the last cash spots in his division and not having a very good 4th round  I was well on my way to creeping back into the cash when that round was called (it didnt rain another drop or shoot lightning after that initial strike when play was being resumed). No one can fault Grease though. He did the best he could with a crappy situation. Damn lightning just had to strike one more time and ruin it for everyone. Still had an awesome time. Thanks as always to Grease for running a great tournament. Cant wait to play again next year :D

It's tough to make a call like that with bits of information and a lot of questionable prognostication from so many people. Thanks to Greg for taking input, weighing the options, making a choice and sticking to it.

Well, sorry about the weather. The guy that had radar on his phone DID have the movement of the clouds and there were small cells popping up everywhere over Douglasville. It has been and is still raining here just 15 minutes North. It was hard to call it with that sun shining on us, but mother nature let us know that she wasn't quite done with the lightning and I can't take a chance of someone getting hurt. I would like to see the TD that makes a decision with 70 players torn in 4 directions barking at him in a similar situation that satisfies 100% of the field. I tried.

Thanks to everyone who endured the weather and stuck through it without complaining. Special thanks to Brett for scoring, Brad Orman for handling the water, Wade Selph, Merritt, and Darren Schatz for course maintenance, and DD for the brochures and sponsor signs. Thank you to all the sponsors.

They will be up in a day or two max. Wondering who won overall and what happened with the weather? Shortened tourney? Delay? Real Housewives of Atlanta Drama?

Matt Dollar won Open.
Chris Rodesney won Advanced.
Robert Dickens won Intermediate.

Fourth round was canceled when several large thunderstorms appeared in the area. Hole 8 was covered in water the low point so much that is made it unsafe and unfair to the other competitors to play.

Hey Grease, when will the results be posted? Why did you call the tournament? Why didn't everyone get a hug? One of the ducks looked at me funny on hole 3 and I wanna know what you plan on doing about it? Where did I leave my umbrella? Where in the world is Carmen San Diego? What do you think about while you're sitting on the crapper? Why is it illegal to sucker punch little kids at Chuck E Cheese? How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if he was high on meth and had a gas powered chucking machine? If you were one of the New Kids on the Block, which one would you be? Why were there yellow jackets on the course (not the bees, but people who went to GA Tech)? What is the square root of my ass? Who let the dogs out? Who would win in a fight between a shark with a gun and a bear with chainsaw hands? What are rainbows made out of? Do you think I'm pretty? When will the results be posted?..........................

Holy crap people. It hasnt even been 5 full days since the tournament was over. How much of an impact is it really having on your lives not knowing your round ratings yet? I'm guessing that everyone bitching has run their own tournaments and had the rounds posted the next day, even though they have jobs and other obligations during the week. I now understand why TDs get pissed about others chiming in. If you can do it better or faster then you should probably run your own tournament. I'm sure the people chiming in and giving friendly reminders is helping too. Without you Grease probably would have forgotten all about posting the results. Patience is a virtue, and Grease is the man. Thats why I have his poster up on my ceiling. That way he's the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning and the last thing I see before I go to bed

I'm not criticizing Grease or calling him a bad TD or anything. I just like to look at the final numbers and round ratings and such, the same way I go enjoy looking at the excel spreadsheets Ritger makes from Perkerson. And I'm curious as to what an 8 under round of 46 is rated.

Probably going to be close to 1050 rated round. Chris now ties the course record that was set by Ritger, Vach and Hammock.

Greg - the ratings are WAY off as it seems that the REC and Junior are listed as playing the same course as everyone else all 3 rounds.

Thanks for getting the scores up and it's too bad my crappy 52 is REALLY only going to be rated about 1000 when ratings are correct.
My 61 in first round should be about 910-925.

I did notice that the ratings are WAY off, but adjusted everything as far as I could tell. Everyone except rec and jr are playing a par 56 course for 3 rounds. I can't figure out where the error is.

You need to go into ratings tab of the Tournament admin and set each division there round by round for all 3 rounds and then the results will be accurate.

I've gone back and forth and apparently everyone shot great last weekend. I don't understand why the rec and jr ratings aren't registering. I can email the link to a more experienced TD if he would like to investigate.

Recs and Jrs probably won't get a rating because there weren't enough propagators in their divisions.

Something is wrong somewhere - as you can look at the ratings from last years (NOV 2009) PPPIC 3 here: http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results? ... ngs=1#Open

And last years GSSS at Deerlick (MAY 2009) here: http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results? ... ngs=1#Open

The ratings are from the same layouts with mostly the same players and looking at the same scores they are off this year by 70+ points.

They do normally, but since there was only 1 true prop and 3 rounds I don't know if they'll be able to combine enough data to make it work - time will tell as next update is Aug 22nd.

By the way at this time - 11:47AM - only pro divisions even have scores listed and everyone else has nothing.

Possible explanations:
-Maybe we get jacked on the ratings so much, they finally wanted to hook us up!
-Maybe Grease figured out a way to manipulate the ratings and now the PPIC will sell out quicker than Lake Russell.
-Maybe we get and extra 70PPR (points per round) for playing in an IT(Intergalactic Tour) level event.
-Maybe the flood on hole 8 washed away the real scores, and Grease is doing it from memory.

You need 5 props for unofficial ratings and at least 3 props within two or more rounds for an official rating. With only one prop in this event, no rating will be given.

Scores for everyone are back up with ratings for everyone except REC and JR Divisions - Ratings are still way off - 30-40 points minimum compared to the last 2 Events there in the last 9 months - there is NO WAY under any conditions that an even par 56 is a 1000 rated round there now, when it was a 951 rated round 7 months ago.

Hopefully when the ratings are done officially they will be corrected.

I am not sure what the problem is but I figured I would list my calculations.

This is for the first round... The scores are in order of placement. This is calculated by total score and not by hole by hole scores so it still could be off a little. I also did not check to make sure all rated players were props and included everyone with a rating. I may do the other two rounds tomorrow.

Re: PPIC IV PDGA C-Tier 17-18 July 2010

Postby grease » Sun Jul 25, 2010 8:32 am

I've re-entered scores four times(not fun), added round entries twice, and still can't figure out why the ratings are jacked. The only thing I think it may be is there is a "finals" round listed in the report that is checked and I can't uncheck it. So, maybe ratings are based on four rounds vs three? I don't know. But, hey, scores are up and ratings look real good for now.

Hey Greg, i'm not sure if this has anything to do with the ratings being off, but the same score is rated differently in different divisions. I think it thinks everyone played a different layout.

Any reason why these scored didn't make it into the last PDGA player rating update?

Probably had something to do with disgruntled midgets.

Are we 100% sure that Grease has not been replaced by 5 midgets in a Grease suit?

Yeah seriously. Why wasn't this tourney part of the ratings update? This was the only thing I played in since the last update and I actually had a few good rounds in there. I was hoping to jump up a few points. I know the ratings seemed a bit off, but it was still a PDGA sanctioned event. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't these tourneys pay a decent amount to the PDGA for sanctioning. What is the point of paying them any money if the round ratings are not counted? I think we need some damn money back from the PDGA. I don't think just having a banner up at the sign ins is worth whatever sanctioning fees they were paid. I call shenanigans

Paying for sanctioning and getting reports submitted are 2 different things.

Greg had 30 days to submit the TD report, which the ratings are pulled from (the online posted scores are NOT used for ratings) and the deadline for TD Reports to be included in the AUGUST 31st ratings was Aug 17th.

So if the TD report was NOT submitted by then they will be in the next update in OCT.

You would need to ask Greg if the TD Report was submitted before the deadline.

Sorry, missed the deadline by a day or two. Even if I made it, the ratings would've been recalculated and at this point are by no means correct.
