Georgia Tech Fundraiser Tournament

Postby Rubiks » Tue May 11, 2010 9:10 am

The Georgia Tech Disc Golf Club will be hosting a fundraiser tournament at Perkerson Park in the Fall. Plans are still preliminary, but this will be a pretty bare bones tournament. $15 or $20 entry, with 50% or 60% going towards payout, and the rest towards helping Tech get back to the National Collegiate Disc Golf Championship in the spring. We've already qualified, now we just need a little help covering expenses.

Also, we would like for this NOT be a stroke play singles tournament, but instead some kind of fun format. Regular doubles (not necessarily best shot), Danny Noonan doubles, one, two, or three disc rounds, elimination golf, etc. As we're aiming for as big a turnout as possible, there is a poll to vote on formats. Vote for your two favorites, or suggest something totally new. Bottom line, we want something fun that you want to play. And depending on poll results, we'll also consider selling mulligans for those who might be interested.

As for any event hosted at Perk, we will need baskets. If you've got one that you wouldn't mind lending out, let me know. Thank you!

That would be a great idea!!!
I have tons of 150 class discs!!

I vote 150 class

Perkerson is an evil place for stranger action.

Pick somewhere with average hole lengths <400 for that.

Peachtree City stranger action sounds like a sure bet.

1 disc grab bag. Everyone playing brings 1 disc and its put in a box. As holes are being called out players grab from the box and play the whole round with that disc. Be nice and bring a Roc, be nasty and bring an Epic!

Well, a limited disc tournament is winning the poll. I also like the 150 class and superclass ideas, but I'm concerned that those formats might limit participation (I don't own a single disc that would qualify for either). So how about a three-disc round followed by a one-disc round? I might play with the OB rules for the one-disc round to speed up play if necessary (play it where it lies with a penalty stroke, instead of re-throwing from the previous lie). Then again, a one-disc round ought to go quicker than a normal round to begin with. Thoughts?

And dandaman, why not throw together a fan tournament? Host it at Moseley, just like regular action, except every player picks either UGA or Tech (or Clemson, or Bama, or whatever other schools have s lot of fans in the Atlanta area). Then add up team scores in some fair manner, and one school will come out on top. Just thinking out loud, trying to generate some more interest in the 'Mose.

I voted for the 6-6-6 action. We played this at Winthrop during the US Doubles Championship last year. It was really fun. We played Best Shot, Worst Shot, and Alternate Shot, I think.

Best Shot-Both player's play out the hole and the better score is recorded.

Worst Shot-Pretty obvious

Alternate Shot-Even more obvious.

Seems like a 3-disc round followed by a 1-disc round is a little redundant. Maybe a 1-disc round followed by a safari or shortened holes or something. Also, OB rules do not necessarily mandate rethrow from previous lie, you can also play it from the last place it went OB.
