Georgia Tech Invitational Collegiate Tournament 3-20-2010

Postby Rubiks » Tue Feb 02, 2010 8:58 pm

The Georgia Tech Disc Golf Club
presents
1st Annual Georgia Tech Invitational Collegiate Disc Golf Tournament

Saturday March 20, 2010 @ Perkerson Park

Open to teams of 2 to 4 current college students. Proof of student status is required. The format is two rounds; the first round will be stroke play singles and the second will be alternate shot doubles. Each team's final score will be calculated by adding their two best singles play scores and their best doubles score. (Examples: A four person team will be able to drop their two worst singles scores and their worst doubles score. A three person team will drop their one worst singles score, and then choose two of the three members to play for the team's sole doubles score. And a two person team will not be able to drop any rounds. So, teams with four players will have an edge, but colleges with a smaller pool of players who may not be able to field four players can still compete.)

Early entry fee is $15 per player before March 5. Late entry is $25 per player. Entry fee includes lunch in between rounds and awards for top performances.
Make checks payable to (please include a player roster):
Alex Harkey
331904 Georgia Tech Station
Atlanta, Georgia 30332

Schedule:
9:00 - 10:00 Check in
10:00 Players meeting
10:15 Singles
12:30 Lunch
1:15 Doubles

Directions to Perkerson Park:
From Interstate 75/85, take exit 244 for University Avenue. Head West on University Avenue, then take a left onto Metropolitan Parkway. Turn right onto Deckner Avenue, and Perkerson Park will be ahead on the left. Take the second road into the park (NOT the one by the big red sculpture!). Parking is in the gravel lot on the left.

Note: We need baskets!
As Perkerson Park is not yet a permanent course, we will be setting up the course specifically for this tournament. That means we need 18 portable baskets. If you are a local disc golfer, or just anyone with a basket, please consider loaning out your basket for the day on Saturday (~8:30am — ~4:00pm). The higher quality the better, but we won't turn away anything that catches a disc. PM me if you can help us out. Thanks!

For more information, contact Alex Harkey at aharkey3@gatech.edu (preferred) or (404) 395-7377.
Alternately, send Rubiks a private message.

Yep I know about it, I talked to Chris (Rubiks) before he posted.

They are gonna borrow my 11 baskets & could really use 6 loaner baskets for the weekend so they can setup 18, i think chris has 1 basket ... and some help running it.

This is really cool action, they're gonna have a ton of people playing once the DG word gets out among the college crowd. there is already a core group of GT golfers that have been coming out to Perk & were @ Flyboy fall ADGO event.

If I am able to scrounge up a co-ed team of grad/law students, would that be legal? I'm sure we would be awful, if that helps my cause at all...

oops, scratch that question, I guess I should read the date of the tournament and make sure I didn't just sign up for another one the same day before I start making comments

Any chance that there could be a singles collegiate tounrament? This sounds like it would be a really great tournament for us college students, but I signed up for the Crucible tournament...and I hear great things about Perkerson.

Possibly in the future. If I had my way there would be a different college event to play every weekend. But this year we're basing the format on similar college events. Disc golf is an individual sport, so it's about finding the right balance between the individual and the school/team aspects. Also, there are already a ton of great events that are open to individual players, so we're trying to do something a little different. Keep your ears open though.

In other news, I have gotten a few basket commitments, but right now we are still three baskets short. So if you can let us borrow a basket, let me know, we will be eternally grateful. We'll also let you play the full 18 holes as much as you want, the whole day, just for being so helpful. If you have a basket but don't want to do drive out to Perk, PM me and we'll try to work something else out. Thanks again. The top post has been updated with a list of potential teams. If your school isn't on there, there is still time to add it. You've got until next Friday, March 5th, to get in for only $15 per player. After that, it's $25 each.

Only four more days until the 1st ever GT Invitational! Top post has again been updated with the five confirmed colleges. Tournament is go for Saturday, and the weather looks like it might cooperate too. Basket list is as follows;

Josh H. 2 + Ritger's metal one
Ritger 10 portables
Jon M. 1
Connor 1
Myself 2
Woody 1

Big thanks to everyone on that list, especially Josh, Woody and Ritger. If any attending players are reading this and have a portable basket, it wouldn't hurt to toss it in the trunk too and bring it with you on Saturday just in case. For teams arriving early, we will have the course flagged by approximately 4:45 on Friday. Baskets will not be set up, but teepads and basket locations will be marked. I will be out there from about 4:00 onwards, so if you'd like to come walk the course and throw some shots you can.

On Saturday we will have light snacks and drinks in case you need to grab something before the round or if you want to take something to take with you during the round. If you need a more substantial breakfast I'd encourage you to grab something on the way here as there isn't much in the immediate area. Also, temperatures are supposed to be in the upper 60s so don't forget you're water bottles, especially for the second round. Lunch will be provided between rounds, and awards and wrap-up will be after the second round. If you have any other questions or concerns, email GT Club President Alex Harkey at aharkey3@gatech.edu or send me a PM.

The First Annual GT Invitational was a success, and enjoyed some great weather. Five schools competed, and when the dust settled after the second round, Clemson came out on top with an even-par 180. I'll post the rest of the scores and standings later. Like now.

Clemson Round 1 - 123
Round 2 - 57
Total 180

Alabama Huntsville Round 1 - 121
Round 2 - 62
Total 183 (Won the second place playoff against Tech)

GT Round 1 - 120
Round 2 - 63
Total 183

Alabama Round 1 - 123
Round 2 - 63
Total 186

Columbus State Round 1 - 145
Round 2 - 76
Total 221

Top Singles
Chris Rodesney - GT 57
Jared Neal - Alabama Huntsville 58
Kevin - Alabama 59
Austin - Clemson 60

In the mean time, I'd like to thank again everyone who helped out, in no particular order: John Ritger, Josh Henley, Woody, the City of Atlanta, Alex Harkey, the Harkeys for a wonderful lunch and all of the associated signage and snacks, Connor Beveridge, Jon McDuffie, the Georgia Tech Disc Golf Club, Taylor, and all of the clubs and players who showed up and made this event possible. This was the first year and we had no idea what was going to happen, so we really appreciate all of the support. And hopefully we'll be seeing all of you and others at the 2011 GT Invitational.

It was top two singles scores plus top doubles score for each school, and we were playing the par 60 layout. And yeah, Josh helped a ton. I still have all of your flags and signs and I can get those back to you some time next week.
