Which 4-6 tournaments?

Postby edj42 » Tue Jan 12, 2010 9:49 pm

I don't have the time or the inclination to do all of the tournaments you hard core disc golfers play each year. Which 4-6 tournaments would you play this year if that is all the time you could commit? I would not include the doubles action around town in this question.
If all goes well in a typical round, I guess I would finish somewhere in the middle of the pack. $ would not have to sweat my participation in a round.
I am just curious which ATL area tournaments you would prioritize. :?:

Hopefully Augusta courses. I've only played IDGC once, but would travel more to Augusta if they had more action at Olmstead and Riverview.

As for can't miss. All of Grease's or Keith's tournaments are worth the trip. I wouldn't miss The Crucible, Lake Russell, Stephens County Pro Am, Georgia State Championships, Atlanta Open. To name a few. Stephens County Pro Am should be at the top of your list though along with 95 of your close personal friends.

Yeah for what ever reason the two possibly best courses in the state (Olmstead and Riverview) are hardly ever used. Actually I know the answer to this but I will decline citing it here. As for tournaments I would say the Georgia State Championships, Stephens county Pro/Am, Charleston Classic, Meeks Madness and the Hotlanta come to mind for me. Aside from these I would try to hit bigger stuff like A tiers or the National Tours coming up in Florida and North Carolina just for the overall quality factor.

Riverview is actually in South Carolina, but I'm sure you know this. :D Point taken none the less.

All fun and good tournaments, I'm sure. I probably should have more clealy refined my question to "metro Atlanta" tournaments. If I have to get up before 6:30a.m. to make it to the course, warm up a little, and pay attention to the meeting, I probably won't make it. Also, I would probably want to make it home for dinner with the family.
Thanks for the ideas- maybe on a rare occasion, I could get a hall pass from the family to do some of these other more far away tournaments.

Under that restriction, you won't have many choices. Depending on where you live, perhaps you can make Hotlanta (but you won't make it home for dinner.)

You would have a hard time making it home for dinner no matter which tournament you play. Especially when TD's have 2nd round player's meetings and uber long awards ceremonies. Just sayin.

I know you aren't talking about me, because although I do have 2nd round players meetings, I have the shortest awards ceremonies in the ATL - At the Deerlick and Meeks Events everyone was out the door by 4:30 and I was home before 7 from both even after cleaning up, loading the van, and driving 1&1/2 hours home.

There are alot of 1 day Events both Sanctioned and Unsanctioned that should meet your criteria, depending on what part of town you live in.

All of the GSSS Events are scattered around the Metro ATL, but none are further than 1&3/4 hours from my house (which is 3 miles south of Sequoyah park on GA 140).

If you live south by Fayetteville it might take over 2 hours to get to Toccoa, but only 15 minutes to Mosely, or McCurry - conversely if you live in North Forsyth you might be 15 minutes from Central, but 2 hours from Mosely, or McCurry.

You should be able to find a good 4-6 Events from these lists below.

The Sanctioned Events are listed here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2169

The unsanctioned Events are listed here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2170

EDJ, not sure exactly who you are ( I thought Ed Jacobs). Are you looking for fun or competition or
tournament experience in general? The AO will bring out the tough and serious competitors. That
might not be your cup of tea. The GSSSS events will mostly be homegrown except for the big one
at Central. I can't recommend the PPIC, because it sucks, the course sucks, the TD sucks, the payout
sucks, and his stupid spaceship sucks! Your time limit is very constricting, but I would suggest these
five as my never miss:
1. Lake Russell
2. Atlanta Open
3. Meeks Madness
4. Hotlanta (only if Redan is in the mix)
5. Gwinnett County Open

As for unsanctioned stuff, never miss action at Monticello. Peaceful vibe and a great TD. Not to
mention extremely fun course.
Fart, it's never not funny!

the best tourney of 2010 is gonna be the ADGO event April 9-11 @ Fly Boy (even if it's 45 & raining) -- can't disagree with anyone else's opinions, depends completely on what you are looking for (fun vs competitive) and what kind of courses you like

OK, so I'll miss dinner every so often with the family. It's not like teenagers care that much anyway.
Any tournaments I do would be for fun AND competition- I would not lose sleep if I didn't win, but would if I were dead last.
I think I could tolerate a 1- 1.5 hour drive to a tournament.
I don't really think I care if the tournament is an A, B, or C tier- but I probably would prefer the B or C tier tournaments.
I am going to try to participate in the FROST in the Woods event, for example.
Thanks for the specific suggestions. I will look into those and see which ones mesh with the family calendar.

Ed,
You should make White Oak's action next weekend. You may not make it home for dinner, though.
