ADGO Fall Event - Sunday Nov 22nd @ Flyboy Aviation

Postby jritger » Thu Sep 10, 2009 12:05 pm

Stay tuned as this is subject to change. put it on your calendar as you definitely want to play this private course.

The ADGO fall event will be held @ Flyboy Aviation on Sunday November 22nd. This is Kelly Legette's private course west of Atlanta....definitely one of the best courses & probably the coolest DG venue in GA. At last count it was a 27-hole, par 100 layout. PDGA Directory listing >> http://www.pdga.com/course-details?id=3248

This event is for ADGO members. Cost to join is $15; cost to renew is $10. You can join/renew online (link to signup/renew online here) or @ the event.

Anyone is welcome to come out saturday to play the course & do setup & spend the night prior to the event. there is floor space (bring air mattress) or camping in nice bermuda grass

we need help running the event .... people to help with registrations, setup, cooking food for lunch, etc -- let me know if you can help out

The plan:
1 round of 27 holes followed by lunch (provided by ADGO). After lunch you can play more, chill, leave, etc

Check in -- 8am to 9:15am
Players meeting - 9:30am
Tee off -- 10am
Lunch to immediately follow

Event CFR Discs with sick stamp - $20 each - support the ADGO
Ch Gator (6)

New layout is awesome out at this course. Putting Green for "Righty's Revenge" was washed away in last week's flood, so Kelley combined #15 and #16 to make a super badass par 5 with two lake shots along a dog-leg right fairway. Just another beautiful design.

trying to picture it ... that's combining the shot along the lake with the shot on top of the dam??

If that's the ones, it will be a tough hole. I could see getting a good drive would put you in a position to bomb over the lake! I like this idea. Can't wait to play the course! Thanks Flyboy Aviation!

Yeah Ritger, that is exactly what I was talking about. You have to watch out that you don't hyzer off the far side of the dam either, cause that's a giant sinkhole now ( however, the sinkhole makes for a stunning view ).

Pete didnt mention that Kelley now has a basket mounted up on top of the hangar, about 80 ft up, that I think is gonna be used for some sort of ace throw off. This just adds to the badassery of Flyboy Aviation. Anyone who hasn't played there needs to sign up immediately. The theme out there is definitely "Bigger is better". Every time that we go out to visit Kelley, there is a new hole or an old hole modified into a crazy par 4 or 5. There are shots and basket placements that you won't see anywhere else in GA, plus the longest hole in the world (Par 7 1600+ ft up the grass runway in his backyard with OB on both sides). It is truly sick. And if you ever wondered what it was like to throw a drive off a rickety dock over water or throw to a basket buried in the ground, then wonder no more. This place has it all. Like Ritger said, this is one of the best courses in GA, and it is definitely one of the best disc golf experiences you'll have around here. The hospitality is always incredible. Kelley and his mom and dad are awesome and way too generous. Whoever misses out on this is gonna regret it. And mark my words. The Flyboy Aviation towel that is bestowed upon the winner of each little tourney out there will become the most coveted trophy in all of disc golf

Actually trophy lakes has put 13 in the ground. The top of the basket is level with the ground.

I have a job going on in Charleston and get to play once a week now.

Why does a renewing member under #115 need to pay $15 versus $10 for ADGO renewal?

If you have already renewed or joined this year (2009), you are in (if you show up.)
Renewals are for 2009 and does not include the 2010 spring event or the 2010 fall event.

Tournament and food is provided. Side action will be available.

NEW memberships includes all of 2010. (That's a discount!)
Early renewal for 2010 will be offered as well.

.....I think.

Yes.
By making your membership current (i.e. joining or renewing), you are in the tournament. side action is optional.

Current = renewed @ spring event or during the calendar year 2009. i'll post before the event. if your last renewal was @ last fall's event & you didn't renew @ the spring event @ redan, you are not current & need to renew.

Yeah I understand.
I am just trying to give the MPO players a chance to win a towel.
Tom Monroe has had the low score almost every time he plays Fly Boy.
I could run interference in the MPM division while the MPO guys fight it out for the win.

Just played what I believe to be the final layout for Flyboy on Sunday. It is looking awesome. There was a missing hole in the 27 hole layout that has been replaced (a nice little downhill alley shot with a creek behind, right after the new badass par 5). Everything is mown and the shule is getting thinned out on all the holes. This place is already incredible, but I think Kelley is going to have it on another level come tourney time. No one will be disappointed, believe me.

Whoever comes out Saturday, the 9 holes around the hangar would make for some sweet night golf, so bring lights if you have them. Plus I'm sure if anyone wants to get action going on Saturday during the day there will be plenty of takers. I wouldn't mind getting a nice doubles round goin. Kelley's course would be incredible for dubs! Blind draw dubs early afternoon Saturday! Either way, this is going to be the best disc golf weekend in Georgia.

Drive 6 or 7 miles until you reach the turn circle at Hwy 166. Go right on Hwy 166. Proceed several miles and turn left on Jones Mill Road. Are these directions good? Are all roads (166) open? Or is there a better way?

If you're on a budget, you can try this service (I think it's in Terminal T). The harness release can be a little tricky

For those who have played here before and know Kelly, I guess you are aware that he has gotton married.

I was thinking of doing some kind of wedding gift from the disc golfers. Would anyone be interested? We could present it to him before the tournament.

If so I would love to hear some suggestions on what to get him. Shoot me a PM if you would like to donate some $$$ and what you think would be a good gift.

ADGO members,
My Folks and I are really looking forward to hosting the ADGO Fall event at Fly Boy Aviation disc Golf Course! My aim is for you to leave with a huge smile on your face, and some lasting memories of the most unique and enjoyable day of disc golf you’ve ever played. The course is 27 holes for a Par 100. That’s 7 par 4s, 4 par 5s and a par 7 on the longest disc golf hole in the world of approximately 1600 feet! The remaining par 3s vary from tough to easily Deucable, with several Ace opportunities. Total length of the course is roughly 14,000 feet long (that’s just the hole lengths added up). There are 3 lakes, many elevation changes, and a Runway, amongst several other unique features. The current layout is challenging, rewarding, and frustrating…….and…..you’ll probably lose a disc or two, but its well worth the effort.

I thought I'd throw out a little info, which might be helpful to everyone headed my way Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd NOV. Wanna hear it….here it goes:

WHAT TO BRING: Sunday’s going to be a long day! With a foursome on every Tee, it may take 4 to 5 hours to play the 27 holes, especially with so many players new to the course. Make sure to bring plenty of liquids and snacks to hold you over till lunch, which may not be until 3pm or so. Bring extra plastic. The “Disc Gods” demand a lot of sacrifices out here. If you have water retrieval devices, bring them. I have loaner floater discs available, and I’m sure there’ll be some disc vendors here as well.

DIRECTIONS: The directions Ritger posted here recently are good, as Post road still has a bridge out from the "Big Flood". However, there is another route coming from the South East, that's more convenient if driving from that side of Atlanta:

Take I-85 South, and follow the signs just south of the airport for South Fulton Pkwy, headed west. Stay on South Fulton Pkwy until you hit the stop sign at Hwy 166. (South Fulton Pkwy turns into Caps Ferry Rd the last few miles to Hwy 166). Turn left on Hwy 166, and proceed to Jones Mill Road and turn left. (Jones Mill is marked by BIG power lines across the road, and a sign pointing to Consolation Church). After turning left on Jones Mill continue to Consolation Church Rd and turn left. Then turn left at mailbox #254 and you're there. These are the easiest ways to get here. Just remember that a Post Rd bridge between I-20 and Hwy 166 is out, and Hwy 166 (near the intersection of Hwy 92) also has a bridge out. Your GPS doesn’t know this. There will be some Fly Boy Disc Golf signs out to give you a warm fuzzy feeling that you’re getting close.

PARKING: The biggest group I've had at my place before this event is about 35 folks. We're gonna have over 100! Parking may become an issue. I highly recommend car-pooling if you can. Wade Selph is the "Parking Czar". When you show up, look for Wade, and follow his directions to your parking spot. Try to snuggle up best you can. You’re parking in my yard, so try not to spin the tires if its wet……thanx.

SETTLING IN: After you arrive, you’re going to want to grip and grin, look around my place some, and practice a little. SO GET HERE EARLY! Please make yourself at home and explore around at will. A couple of requests: My Folks, Wayne and Lillian, and dogs Max and Morgan live out here and run the place, so please find time to introduce yourself and talk to them. (watch out for Morgan, she’ll steal you blind, especially your water bottle). The septic tank is woefully small. Use the porta potty outside. If you do use the facilities inside the house, don’t flush unless you have to. Please, shoes off inside the house…especially upstairs! Momma will love you for that. Goes without saying, but please leave the place neat and clean like you found it. Finally…if you’re not having fun, declare an emergency immediately!

SIGN IN: With over 100 players, this will take some time, so GET HERE EARLY!

ACTION: There will be some. Bring $$.

MERCHANDISE: There will be some. Bring $$.

MASS BRIEFING: The Mass briefing by Kelly will start at 9:30 sharp. This is private property, and an active airport out here, so there’s some extra stuff to cover in the brief….GET HERE EARLY!

SHOTGUN START: This is a BIG course, so it’ll take some time to get all the foursomes to their starting tees. There may be some form of mass transit for the folks starting at the outermost locations. More to come on this, but be patient.

ON THE COURSE: Play will be slow with this many folks on the course, so be patient. There will be benches at almost every tee, and coolers with water here and there around the course. Course specifics will be discussed in the Mass Briefing.

LUNCH: The ADGO is catering lunch after the round, but it probably won’t happen until mid afternoon, so plan accordingly with snacks. Unfortunately, garden season is over, so don’t expect the fresh veggies we’ve enjoyed in the past!

HOW ABOUT SATURDAY? Now that’s getting here early! Sounds like there will be a good crowd showing up on Saturday morning for some final course preparations in the morning, and a round of Dubs in the afternoon, with a round of Night Golf, followed by a movie on the Big Screen. Chris Millay is setting all this up, so contact him with specific event questions. I’ll just add, bring some food and drinks, and glow sticks to illuminate your discs. Bring some schule cutters if you have some. There’s plenty of space to pitch your tent outside, or just bring your air mattress and sleeping bag and crash on the hangar floor with Max and Morgan. Shower capacity is extremely limited, so don’t expect to get one Sunday morning. There are a couple of little country stores nearby if you need supplies. I have a Grill available if anyone wants to use it.

That’s about all I can think of right now. Post any questions and I’ll be glad to answer them. I look forward to seeing all of you at Fly Boy Aviation!

Someone climbed right through my open car window today and ganked two Zaxby's Nibblers that belonged to Chris and Dan. We just got there, and we hadn't even finished greeting Lil and Wayne yet! There was shredded Zaxby wrappers all over the seat, so somehow I don't think the Hamburgler, nor the Colonel had a hand in this one. Maybe it was David Copperfield?

Myself and a few other people will be down there probably 10ish on saturday morning to help make sure that everything is ready. Tentatively planning a round of blind draw dubs for the entire 27 hole course between 1-2, depending on who has shown up by then. Then once it gets dark, a round of night golf will begin on the 9 holes by the hangar. Bring lights for your discs or buy an event glow disc. I plan on having the baskets lit up with glow sticks. There will probably be action on both rounds for whoever wants it ($10 or so) but anyone is welcome to play the course at any time on Saturday. Then after all those festivities I think Kelley is gonna show a movie on a big projector screen in the hangar.

The entire weekend should be pretty incredible. Those who've already played here know this. Those who havent will have a lot to look forward to. I know of at least 10 folks from my side of town that will be out for camping. Whoever does show up saturday, please bring food and beer. Kelley and his parents are already being way too generous letting us disc golf hooligans take over their house for a weekend, so help give back by providing some sort of consumable item (a side dish, beer, chips, drinks, beer, or beer)

PS For those of you that have never played night golf, if you don't have a glow disc the little inch long red LEDs work best. These can be found in the fishing bobber section at most Dick's.

I might be down for the glow golf... is the runway hole included? That would be a good selling point, 1600 ft glow golf hole!!! It would be cool if the lights could stay on, but we wouldn't know when a plane was actually landing.... shucks

O.K., just got an extension on my weekend disc golf pass! I have some stuff to take care of in the morning but will be there later in the afternoon on Saturday. I'm down for some November camping. This may be a silly question, but can we setup a campfire on the property? Also, if anyone from the northside is going up Saturday, let me know if you wanna carpool.

Hey Imran, glad you're comming out. We're pitching the tents on a grass taxiway, so no camp fire pits in the ground. However, I do have a portable fire pit you can roll anywhere you like. I've got some wood I think, but not much, so someone might just bring a small stack of cut wood with you.

This map shows which bridges in the area are still closed.

See you guys on Sunday!!

Would like to be there on Saturday, but my girlfriends husband is going camping with the guys on some private airfield so I will be visiting her!!

Haven't tried this before, but let's see if it works:

This spreadsheet lets you pick your own card. Choose wisely as you'll be spending 5 hours/27 holes with them. Hole #'s are subject to change. The giant Am division needs to get split up into Int & Adv since there are 50+ people in it, so put down what div you want on this sheet. Rec is the only division playing a short pad .... you will thank us for this as you will lose fewer discs in the lake :)

Be sure to hit save before you close it.

I'm not sure if there's a course map per se, but for the last decent sized tourney Kelley put on he had overhead pictures taken of every hole and put into a little book. He and a buddy flew over and got great aerial shots of each individual hole and then put them into a book with a hole description (distance, obstacles, name (every hole has a name :!: ), etc). Don't know if that's getting done again. Regardless, the course will be fully flagged with arrows pointing you in the right direction, so there should be no issues with finding your way around. Anyone who wants to help with said flagging and arrow spray painting, come down early Saturday

Yeah, otherwise some of the Beginner/Recs could take 8 hours to play and lose every disc in their bag. I actually wish we got to play from the shorter tees because it usually takes me 5 hours to play and I'm averaging a 1 disc per trip loss (approaching 20 now that are sleeping with the lake monster or stolen by the damn dirty thieving disc gnomes that hide throughout the course). I've lost 3 in a day before, but I think my buddy Mike has the record with 5  . The shorter tees should help spare some people from the same humiliation.

Hey DD I hope you don't mind. I have taken your info and created a 4 sheet booklet including the map Kelly sent me.
Let me know of any corrections that are needed to the original info.
If there is anything else that anyone wants in the booklet I have room to add sponsorship info or logos.
I am going to wait until Friday to print up the final copies.

I can email a copy of the document to anyone that is interested in reviewing it.

Better bring some discs for the discs that get thrown in the lake! I think I may buy Morgan a chewing bone to try to persuade her from sneaking our belongings from our disc golf bags 8) One thing to remember : watch those water bottles!!! Ha! The dogs are one of the best reasons to come out. Personality for sure!

62 hours and counting, went out and attempted to play a little golf with Kelly and Dan but I should have stayed at work, I lost a disk on righty's revenge #15 which was the second hole for me, then got to #18 longest hole in the world and went O.B.six shots in a role, can't wait for Sunday to get here to redeem myself

Big thanks to Brad Orman, "2 Disc Dan", and Wade Selph for helping me get the course ready for you guys. Dan, Brad and I played a round this afternoon.......had the absolute perfect Fall day conditions. Except for each of us losing a disc in the lake, it was spectacular golf! That said, I have good news and bad news.....The good news is that Fly Boy Aviation Disc Golf course has never looked better! Brad and I whacked out most of the schule within 100 feet of the baskets (there's still plenty left out there of course), and Dan and I installed most of the course sineage, path markers, and short Tee positions. The Bad news.......there's a frigging low pressure system off the Gulf of Mexico, headed right at us. So much for perfect Fall day conditions over the weekend, looks like we're in for some rain. I've shopped every weather forecast on the internet trying to find a good one, and the best I can come up with is "chance of showers Saturday PM, showers Sunday". @&@*^%$*@%&**it!!!!!!

Well, "Flexibility is the key to Airpower (and Disc Golf)", so we adapt and overcome! For the Saturday campers: If the chance of rain is pretty high, I'll move the planes and you guys are welcome to pitch your tent inside my aircraft hangar. It has a concrete floor, but if you have an air matress, you're golden. I have air compressors to blow it up for you. The hangar isn't insulated, so it gets pretty cold in there over night. Plan accordingly. You could also just throw an air mattress down on the floor and be fine, as long as you have a warm sleeping bag, and don't mind snuggling with Morgan. I have a porta potty on site that I'll move to the hangar pad. Depending on how many tents we have in the hangar, we may have to take them down in the morning before the mass briefing to accomodate all the people and tables and chairs. I've come up with two portable fire pits on wheels. Please bring a little cut firewood if you can. I'll also have propane heaters here and there around the hangar. Saturday morning to early afternoon looks like the best golfing weather, so we may want to get started a little earlier (Chris).

Make sure to bring rain gear, guys. This course can be extremely challenging on a pretty day....right Brad?.....add some horrible weather and it could get down right miserable! Be perpared! Be flexable! Rainwill slow play to a crawl. A stool will be really nice to have on this course.

More than enough said......see you guys this weekeind!

Yep, like Kelley said it's not looking too pretty this weekend. I dont know which one of you out there has been touching yourself and angering the disc gods, but you're a dick  Regardless, we shall adapt, persevere, and overcome. It's still going to be one of the best disc golf weekends ever. If you'd like to get a dry round in then come early saturday. Looks like we'll have til 5 or 6 before it starts raining, so I'm planning on starting dubs by 1 pm. And to those of you who were planning on coming out saturday but are having second thoughts, don't be a douche. Wet or dry, a douche is still a douche, and if you skip out because of a little moisture then that's what you are  But seriously, there will still be plenty of fun to be had. Beer (Sweetwater, and a bunch of it), food, strippers in cages, robot monkeys with laser wangs, and 700 pounds of vanilla pudding in the trunk of my car. Can't go wrong with all that. So come out and take part in the greatest disc golf party in the history of the world. Just make sure you bring several extra pairs of everything (socks, underwear, shoes, testicles, etc) because it's gonna be wet. And who knows, maybe the rain wont be as bad as the weather people say.

Could someone form the ADGO BoD or whoever is coordinating this event give me a call? I am putting together a booklet with all of the course info and want to catch all of the sponsors and supports for the event. I have to take this to be printed around lunch time so I need to hear from someone soon.

Dammit Grease, you're right. Laser wangs are easily shorted out in the rain. I never plan ahead well enough. Guess we just have to make due with laser wangless robot monkeys. And Vanilla Pudding is my new girl. She'll be one of the strippers dancing in cages. Well, she won't be doing too much dancing. The cages are pretty small and I still havent figured out how I'm gonna squeeze her in there

Woohoo! Its lookin like the rain might hold off until 9-10pm on saturday. Might still be able to get a night round goin. And if the weather gurus are right, then we should only get rain in the first hour or so on sunday. Just rain all night saturday. Looks like we'll be pitching tents inside the hangar. Bring air matresses!! There is a ridiculous amount of room in there so everyone should fit. And the 2 kegs of Sweetwater will make everything alright. If you're on the fence about coming saturday night, quit bein a wuss. It's gonna be a great time

I left my KC Pro teebird at the farthest reaches of the course. Hole eleven, 35ft past the pin and to right a little. It should be at the base of a bush behind the basket. My name and number are on the back. I went to retrieve it after dark and got to hole 8 thinking it was there and realized it was still way out so I did not proceed. Help a brotha out!

Ah, hell -- that was many hours and a lot of wind and rain ago, and I'm old and have a bad memory . It was out in the open -- I think it was relatively close to the basket on 20. We actually found two discs out in the open on that hole, and that along with having survived two terrible starting holes on 18 and 19, and pondering whether to bail out, I didn't take careful note of where it was.

I made it all the way down, around 200 ft at a time, until my approach from about 180 out, when the wind knocked it down 20 ft or so short of the OB rope. Took a circle 12 on it -- could well have been a clean 10 if I'd thrown one more shot straight down the runway before trying to make the turn.

GREAT NEWS!
There was still some beer leftover in Sweetwater 420 keg so I took that home and emptied the remaining beer into gallon water jugs. So if you want a gallon (or two) of some 420 for cheap (talking $2) send me an email. Help me get rid of this beer!

Pete from White Oak has dibs on two. Still got two more for the taking.

Ritger has the scores (and a new baby), so maybe he'll get around to it. Maybe he won't.

Thanks for posting the rundown John.

I count 41 players listed.

Does Kelly have a lost and found area that someone who is going to the Cold snake can bring stuff from Kelly's to?

My glasses in a blue case, and my black/grey umbrella did not make it into the van when I was loading up everything in the dark.

If any of the Fly Boy usuals are going by there and to the Cold Snake, I would appreciate if they would bring the items if they were found.

Thanks in advance,
Keith

Anyone looking for affirmation on THIS board is pushing on a rope. You'll occassionally get it, when it is deserved.

I have played enough tournaments in the freezing wind in rain to last me a while. If I paid to get in, I'll be there. O/w, adios amigos, have a ball...

The disc fishing is excellent at Flyboy Aviation right now! Brad Orman went out yesterday and caught about a dozen discs. I'll post the names later, but rest assured they are safe and sound. Also, I have a green sweatshirt, brown hiking shoes, 1 pr sunglasses (no case), a disc retriever, and several towels. I'm not planning on going to cold snake, but anyone who is, can stop by here and take the lost and found box with them. Thanks again to the hard core troopers who made the effort to come out on Sunday.

I on the other hand, DO remember what I lost. It's a yellow Star Wraith and it hyzered into the water on 3 about 15' from the edge just past where the ditch empties into the lake. Hope the fishin' was as good there too. There's no phone number on it, but it is marked with a big fat 'M' on the underside.

Highbridge Hills is a disc golf complex in Wisconsin which hosted the Pro Worlds in 2007.

That hole along with all of the other 3 courses on site, is a PERMANENTLY installed hole and TEE which is the longest in the World.

Temp baskets like at Flyboy, and Temp tees like I use at McCurry - while fun and cool to claim bragging rights about are not included - for the reason that they are TEMPORARY.

Yes the course is private, but the BASKETS and tees are in TEMPORARY positions, - meaning they move around wherever Kelly wants them, they are not in sleeves with multiple placements which is how the PDGA defines PERMANENT, versus temporary positions for longest holes, otherwise you could have someone say they would tee off at Lenora and say the basket was #6 at Central park making it 32.6 miles long for example.
