He has listed the 14th (Saturday) in the emails for PDGA sanctioning he sent to me as State coordinator.

You wouldn't be there either day, so why do you care.

Now for the important question - is there going to be an old guys division, or am I going to have to make Dollar nervous again by being tied with him teeing off on the 18th hole?

Dollar can probably rest easy. There will be Advanced Masters, I'll add it to the post. Juniors will probably be 2 divisions too, if pre-announcement interest holds up.

Thanks for recognizing Josh!

Gerritt just knows that when he's playing in the GSS Events, that my scores stink and he doesn't realize I'm losing to Woody, Plotky, Rousseau, and Kenney - and now with Bob Johnson who never played Pro Masters until now beating me also, he's confused that I haven't played ADV Masters since 1996 when the age was then 35 for Masters.

And yes - even though I just turned 49, I'm still not as old as the real geezers Woody and Plotky are.

At Alexander and Lenora :?: Never played a Hotlanta at Alex before but I love the fact Lenora is back in the mix. Nothing like a 400ft drive and a missed 10ft putt in the wind. Hope the parking lot at Alex situation has been rectified with the additional parking.

The one I will be posting at Lenora and The Alex contains the same info as http://GwinnettCountyOpen.com. Is that what you are looking for, or something suitable for framing. I can make a PDF of the one I'm going to post at the parks if you like.

I believe FBJ is asking for a flyer for the snail mail entry option. Traditionally a flyer would have the section at the bottom to fill out and the address on where to send the entry fee to.

Will there be trophies?
Are you going to give out plastic headbands for player packs?

Just curious. Never know what to expect these days.

Gvan,

I understand you wanting to maximize payout. ...and players like that.
However, you know the saying "money isn't everything". It's the full experience [which is in the details].
Lake Russell doesn't sell out because the payout is crazy good. Lake Russell sells out because it's one big weekend golf party on a great course at a great park with great friends. It's all that and a bag of tricks mixed into one awesome weekend.

A high payout comes from sponsorships, not skimping on players packs and trophies.
The more time you put into getting cash sponsors, the better your payout/tournament will be. Check?
If you do this, you'll find that you can give out nice trophies, great players packs, and keep the payout optimal, exceeding C-Tier standards.

I would advise you to create a "sponsor packet" to give away to potential sponsors. Hit all the local businesses. Your packet should explain what you plan on doing, what you are asking from them, and how it could benefit them and their community.
Let me know if you need some help with this. I can forward you ones that I created for Atlanta Open and LITW.
In the disc golf community, we have some folks who have connections for various things. Discounts on trophies, players packs, is not far out of reach.

Most importantly, you don't have to do this alone. A good TD is one that has plenty of help and knows how to delegate, asks questions, and uses all resources available to him. Just let me know how I can help you. Thanks for stepping up and running your first event! It will be nerve racking and totally awesome all at the same time.

Best of luck!

Personally I agree with you on this. The only way to grow disc golf is to make payouts bigger and to that end everything possible needs to be done. I personally don't care if I ever get a players pack; I really don't want or expect them. Every once in awhile you get something good in them but I still would rather see the game grow more than getting another towel even it is useful. I also think that plastic payouts should be done away with entirely and only trophies given to ams but given the state of the game I don't know when or if we ever will get there.

I don't think growth has been a problem in the past.
Plus. you can't conquer the world overnight.

But I'll agree that bigger payouts would attract more spectators. Meaning, Big Red, that means you may be watching instead of playing for the $1M grand prize. Also, let's not forget that this is what tiers are for. A-Tier, yes, it should be about the money. C-Tier, not so much.

I think i will put this conversation into a different thread tonight, if I still have those powers on the message board. Not sure. Anyway, I have hunch that this is about to turn into a good debate. ...mmm tasty.

Thanks Imran!

I am, of course, trying to get local sponsors and having a look at your sponsorship package could certainly help improve my first attempt at one, so by all means please forward it to me through td@gwinnettcountyopen.com.

And if anyone has any info on discounted anything, I'm happy to discuss that too.

As for trophy only vs. plastic payouts... better folks than me have argued that to death on other forums. I'll go with the status quo whichever status is quo at the time :)

I haven't finished the layout yet, but rec men/women and juniors will be playing the same layout. Probably all reds at the Alex and short 2 at Lenora.

Important

The place to register for The Gwinnett County Open is at eatsleepdisc.com. You can click the link at the top of this post, go to gwinnettcountyopen.com and click the registeration link there, or go directly to eatsleepdisc.com.

The registration link on the PDGA tournament schedule page is INVALID. (check)
I am sorry for the confusion. I asked that the link not be activated and have now requested it be removed.

In other news:
There are now only 44 spots left for the event. Please sign up fast and please consider sponsoring a hole.

The CFR discs can make a big difference too. Please consider picking up one of those as well. See the above post to see what's available. I'll be at ERP on Thursday and at the Alex Saturday morning.

The Gwinnett County Open is over 50% filled. Don't wait too long if you want to play.

Here is the current Player List.

Please sign up; and please sponsor a hole like the following VERY COOL people and orgs.

Scott Prandy
Darren Kroll
Gwinnett Community Church (Full Corporate Sponsorship! Thanks!)
The Gwinnett Disc Golf Organization - GDGO
(1 other full corporate sponsor pending)

14 holes left to sponsor. Don't miss out on the cool Lenora Barn full color sponsorship disc.

In case you are waiting to sign up for this tournament, I thought I'd mention that Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation is going to change the marquees at the entry to Lenora and Alexander this week. They will read "Disc Golf Tournament November 14th. For more information see GDGO.org."

I anticipate that this will drive some newer players that don't know about DiscGolfAtlanta.com to go sign up. I may be wrong, but if you want to get in the Gwinnett County Open, I wouldn't wait too much longer. There are only 32 spots left.

Pro and advanced divisions are pretty light at the moment.

Did I mention that there are still hole sponsorships available?

Here is the current Player List. There are almost as many Juniors signed up as Pros right now.

Please sign up; and please sponsor a hole like the following VERY COOL people and orgs.
Imran Khan
Scott Walker
Steve Adams
Scott Prandy
Darren Kroll
Gwinnett Community Church (Full Corporate Sponsorship! Thanks!)
The Gwinnett Disc Golf Organization - GDGO

Hey GVan! That CFR wraith I got from you is out-of-the-box awesome! Flies way better than any of my other wraiths. If the other models are as good, then people won't be disappointed.

If so I will give you $30 for a sponsorship, we can put the BYOP Mixed doubles on there. :D

I personally would like to see Alexander in the hardest possible format. 3,16, & 17 all pushed back. We playing the long pad on 2 @ Lenora?

Format: singles :) (I kid, I kid)
I'm finishing up the documentation and will post it here within a few days. Simply put, Intermediate and up will play the long tees in all cases (Including Lenora #2 long tee to basket in the woods). Rec and Juniors will play the short tee to short basket at Lenora #2 and Red tees at the Alex. There are 2 Junior girls that may play some much shorter tees at Alexander for the sake of time.

At Alexander, pins 3, 5, 7, 9 and 17 will be moved to their longer positions at least 8 days before the tournament and that final setup will remain in place through the 15th.

Thanks everyone. I am working hard to ensure this will be a success. For my first tournament, running 2 parks is enough of a challenge over a typical event. Running both parks simultaneously was more than I felt I could handle as my first event. I'm happy to discuss all the reasons why I took that decision (in PMs or in person). For what it's worth, it's my hope that I'll have the experience and ability that I feel is necessary to run both parks at the same time at GCO Mark 2.

If you're hungry for action, PPIC still has some spots open for the week before the GCO... I'll drive (certain conditions may apply, call your local agent for details)

Current wait list for the GCO:

1) Aaron Dean
2) Quinton Mayben
3) Brad Bowman

Now that this action is full, you should take the short drive up to Greenville and play the Upstate Classic at Timmons. Worth the drive in my opinion. Congrats on the sellout GVAN. I hope everything runs smoothly for your first TD action.

Hole descriptions and other details are up at http://GwinnettCountyOpen.com. I haven't had anyone proofread them since I made a bunch of changes, so if you see anything that doesn't look right, please let me know.

The pins will be moving to their tournament positions this week and will all be set by Friday the 6th.

Important

Due to so many Rec players moving up (and good job guys!), I will be making a change on one hole at Lenora. Intermediate players will play the short version of hole #2 (Regular tee near the bench to the basket outside the woods). I will correct the documentation soon. Alexander's layout remains the same.

Reason: Since so many people moved to Int for this tournament, there is a lack of propagators in the Rec division. With several brand new PDGA members playing the tournament, it makes sense to ensure them one rated round by making a small change at Lenora .

Comments or questions to me in PM or in person please.

In other news, the baskets at Alexander are all in their tournament positions as promised. Practice away! :)

You can expect at least two pms because of that. On a lighter note: guess who got the hookup for a certain putter and
will have them at the Alex this weekend? Hint: he has two thumbs. BTW, don't jump to rule Chappy out, he only lost part
of a pinky.

Hey folks, If you haven't noticed, there are TWELVE juniors signed up for the GCO. That's more than I expected, but I think is a good opportunity for disc golf in Gwinnett. Because there will be so many kids there, I'd like to ask everyone to be especially helpful to them by explaining rules as appropriate, offering advice and encouragement, and being good examples. There will probably be a few non-playing parents around too. If you happen to talk to one, please offer thanks for involving their kids in disc golf.

In other news:

Only 2 hole sponsorships left. Only 2 days left. If you want to sponsor a hole, please let me know today. I'll be printing the programs tomorrow.

Weather looks good for the weekend!

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I am pleased that everything went fairly smoothly.

Big thanks to Keith Johnson and Rand Eberhard for pre-game advice, and certainly to Keith for his help with the scoreboard. Also big thanks to everyone that helped out on Saturday like Viki Jacob, Kevin Miller and his wife, Darren Kroll, Ethan Bowers and everyone else that helped schlep stuff around.

I believe the biggest areas of improvement for next year are:
1) better job on Junior layouts and divisions
2) cooler water (I seriously didn't expect it to be 76 degrees) :)
3) fewer bulldozers on the fairways

You're too nice :D . I always just dump everything to Flickr and let them what's interested sort through them on their own. At some point I eventually get round to culling them and posting another set with just the ones that are worth seeing.

True, but it's a batch process and not an interactive one -- I don't have to dedicate my time to it, just tee it up and let it run overnight while I'm sleeping or whatever. Especially when there's a lot of whatever to be done.

Gerrit, awesome job on the stats, I am pretty surprised how many holes average over par (like 8...even if just barely).

It also let me compare my averages from DGCR to see where I am at (LAST) but amazingly showed me that the rating system works pretty good because my average from blues turns out to be close to my average from the 3 rated rounds I have (820s).

Great job again!
