After speaking with Matthew Mashburn (D-Wiz) earlier today, I would like to announce (with apologies to the Seinfeld writers) that this year will be the "Summer of Meeks".

GSSS Event #4 at Meeks Park in Blairsville and Meeks Madness are taking place 4 weeks apart on June 20th and July 18th.

In honor of this occasion, there will be Combo Sponsorship Special Packages Available.
For $50 you can sponsor a hole for BOTH Events and you will receive a GSSS disc of your choice, plus you will be entered in a drawing to win a 50 Dollar Prize package at the GSSS #4 Event, as well as at the Meeks Madness Event. (You may only win once)

Only 16 spots remain available - Holes 1 and 6 are taken.

PM or E-Mail me if you would like to sponsor a hole.

Thanks in advance for your support of Events at Meeks Park.

21 hours gone, 24 spots sold - which means...

ONLY 19 SPOTS LEFT!

Don't get shut out! tm

I had 3 people ask to pay me by check at Kevin's Event because they forgot to signup before leavingt heir home this morning, but I didn't take any of them because I wasn't sure if there would be any spots left when I got back home and - ALL TOGETHER NOW - since I don't have any waitlists, I told them they needed to signup when they got home if they wanted to get in.

ONLY 2 SPOTS LEFT!

41 spots in 44 hours!

Thanks again to EVERYONE!

I'm Happy for WHOEVER wants to play in my Events.

Everyone PRO and AM has the same chance and notice to signup.

If the PROS don't wish to for whatever reason, that's their problem, not MINE.
If it as 72 PRIOS that signed up that would be the AMS problem, not MINE, so I'm good either way.

I'm grateful for the 72 who do sign up for each Event, because it means I'm doing something the people that play them like.
That's who the Events are for - Everyone that plays in them!

Well then, put me on the list of 'Those that don't have a f'n job and won't know if they can afford to compete until closer to the date so they didn't register with money they don't have even though they wanted to so badly but couldn't do so because it would be unwise at this point since there is a good chance they'll either have to move to some other city to find work in their field or end up in their parents' basement or flippin' burgers somewhere'.

Those of us that play a tourny. nearly every weekend somewhere, cannot afford to pay for these events so far in advance. Personally, economic trouble lately hasn't made anything easy, including paying my bills. I would like to be added to the list Woodrow is on.

Re: GSSS EVENT #4 BLAIRSVILLE INFORMATION

Postby keith johnson » Thu Apr 16, 2009 1:17 am

I understand what you all are saying, and that was the main reason for going with 10 week windows, so people would NOT have to plan so far in advance, but even I did not anticipate that the Events would be so well received that they would sell out with a couple of days of going on sale. I figured that Lake Russell would maybe sell out in a week or so, based on everyone's love of the place, but now I am guessing that will sell out in less than 1 day if these past 2 Events are any indication. At the time of setting all of this up last October, the price of gas was double what it is now and the economy was even more in the toilet than it is now, so 10 weeks seemed like a reaonable amount of time to allow people to sign up.

The question is where do you draw the line when planning a Series 5 months before the first Event?
If I make it 2 weeks in advance, the same people will still be waiting at midnite, 25 more will still sign up in the first day, the rest by the next day, and the same people who don't sign up now, will still be saying that they missed out. I realize things are tight for alot of people, but I really don't think that anything I do will change the people that wait and don't get in.

I will say that the PROS who are notorious for not signing up in advance for ANYTHING, are the ones who are not signing up for the Events that pay them better than any other C-tiers and better than 75% of the B-tiers in the country, whereas the AMS who also get paid better, seem to have no problems signing up.
Of the 15 pros that weren't already signed up for Blairsville that played at Kevin's Event this past Saturday, I mentioned to them(and everyone else) in the morning that there was already 10 spots gone and if they wished to play they should sign up that evening, only 1 person who was there signed up before it sold out - Bob Braun.

I can't give anybody any more advanced notice than I already do, by listing the dates for signup 5 months in advance of the first Event.
I also cut off the signup for all 6 Events 3 weeks early, when it looked like all 6 Events would sell out well before the end of 2008.

I wish I could do something else to help, but all I can say is everyone has the same opportunity if they REALLY want to play the Events to get in.

I really can't do any more than that.

Maybe next years events could be called " The Georgia Super Six I made a course inside a course Series"

What am I altering?
Everyone is playing from the tee pads already there. I'm using some OB that Matthew said they pretty much use already, and 2 Mando's for safety.

Stop whining and wait by your computer on May 30th at 12:01 am if you want to play Central.

I will be late on that one as well.... I think I just like to complain and stir the kettle. I was also giving you grief about super sizing courses. I like what you do... and respect all that you do for disc golf..... yet I am bored at work sometimes and have nothing else to do but smack the bee's nest a bit ;)

No problem Queen Bee.

By the way the only course I Supersize is Central,
The CRUCIBLE doesn't change for Pro/ADV and I actually SHORTEN it for INT and REC players versus the way Doug has it for Flying EYE.
I only lengthened 3 boring holes at McCurry to get 3 more par strokes.
I don't change Deerlick except for this year to put 16 on the hill,
I Don't Change Lake Russell.
I'm not changing Blairsville -
So we have 6 Events in the SERIES - 4 I don't change, 1 I change 4 holes and, ONE I Supersize - seems a little biased to me Mr. Henley.

I just think Everyone's perception is skewed by what I do at Central, which is use ALL the Disc Golf Course to it's best potential.

Just a reminder about the "Summer of Meeks".

And as always you can sponsor just the GSSS Event #4 at Meeks for the same GSSS deal as usual - $35 for the TSign and ANY GSSS Disc, or $25 for the TSign alone.

Only 13 spots remain available - Holes 1,2,3,4 and 6 are taken.

PM or E-Mail me if you would like to sponsor a hole.

Thanks in advance for your support of Events at Meeks Park.

Moose's mind trick must have worked on the crowd throwing out numbers at Deerlick as his name was the one drawn and he was the only one not there except Scott Vaughan who had guessed.

I didn't remember seeing him at all, but I didn't check the spreadsheet before posting. - Now I'll go and remove Scott's name from both posts and leave people wondering what we are talking about.

2 people have dropped out of Blairsville and the 2 people that were on the "mental list" have declined the spots, so I'm coming here to post that the first 2 people no matter the division to PM me will be entered into the Event in place of the 2 that dropped.

So now's your chance to get in if you missed getting in during the first 44 hours it was on sale.

Stay tuned here later this week for some other important "special" news about the Series.

Griffin and I played Meeks yesterday. 1/3 of 17's tee pad is underwater with the lake up. Keith, you might need to put a temp pad 10' in front.

Wade just sent me a picture of the tee and if the lake is still that high in 2 weeks, we''ll just play it from a few feet ahead on the path - not a problem.

Thanks for the update.

Scott Prandy and Imran Khan will have to move up to the INT division at least becuase their ratings are above 900 after the last ratings update on May 19th.
If you guys would please let me know which division you would like to move to before June 15th it would make setting the board complete.

Matt - go on-line at look at cabins to rent in Blairsville. I work with a guy whose son plays baseball up there and he rents cabins for really cheap up there. You can also PM D-Wiz or HTorbit and they can probably guide you.

Tournament Host Hotel for both Meeks events is: Seasons Inn,16 Town Square, Blairsville, GA 30512 Phone 706-745-1631
http://www.seasons-inn.com/

Mention disc golf and the rates are $60 plus tax for 2 nights or $65 plus tax for one night. There is also a Holiday Inn Express in Blairsville I would recommend if Seasons Inn is full. Camping and cabins abound as well....

I made some phone calls to the area hotels and booked at the Seasons Inn. Just though every one should know, the Holiday Inn Express is undergoing renovation! Its just under double the price ($105/night) of the Seasons Inn too! Just dont forget to pack your dust mask and earplugs and you should be able to enjoy your stay

Info from Matthew Mashburn about the park Saturday morning:

FYI, the entrance to the park will be a little crazy. On the other side of the street and at North GA Tech, their will be a car show and benefit. This shouldn't affect our parking, but folks should plan to arrive early if possible.
PLEASE take this to heart, as I have no idea how the traffic will be around that time and I would hate to see anyone miss the start of the Event, while being stuck in traffic.

Times and info:
THIS EVENT IS A PDGA SANCTIONED C-TIER EVENT
2 ROUNDS OF 18 HOLES

SATURDAY CHECK-IN 8:15-9:15 AM
PLAYERS MEETING 9:30 AM
1ST ROUND TEE-OFF 10:00 AM
LUNCH BREAK
2ND ROUND TEE-OFF TO BE ANNOUNCED
AWARDS AFTER THE EVENT IN THE PAVILION!

For directions please use Mapquest or Googlequest from your location as there are a few ways to get to Blairsville.

Hole descriptions upthread.

See everyone Saturday morning!

I75 North to I 575 North.

I575 turns into Ga 515 (after I575 exit 27).

Stay on Ga 515 approx 63 miles and Meeks Park is on the left.

Please use THIS Address for directions as the driveway for the college and the park are connected at the top of the hill (KEEP LEFT for Disc Golf course):

North Georgia Technical College
434 Meeks Avenue
Blairsville, GA 30512

You will see a basket near the entrance on your right(basket 3) about 200 feet away.

The main part of MEEKS Park is actually across the street with no way to get to the Disc Golf course without crossing the 4 lane highway.

Tournament Central is at the pavilion at the bottom of the hill (only pavilion).

See everyone soon!

Was out there today and all of the grass is mowed, there were 3-4 trucks with people from the county weedeating, moving downed brush and debris, and the course looks good!! Nice job guys!

Don't know if they are going to refresh any of the teepads, but a lot of grass has grown up through a few of them, and kinda lumpy, so be prepared for that.

The lake is down to normal, and 17's tee pad has about 5 feet of dirt behind it to the lake. But there are storms moving through there right now, so who knows what it will be like Saturday?

Just out of curiosity, will there be caution tape put up on some of the walking paths? We had to wait on 3 different holes, and with all the other activities going on nearby, and being a saturday, this could prove to make rounds SLOW.

A spot has opened up from someone PM me last night to cancel.
The first person to PM me will get the spot.

To Chris:
Thanks for the update, I haven't seen it since April. I am going to be there Friday evening and when I set out the tee signs I'll rake out the teepads, so hopefully they will be ok.
The paths wind back and forth parallel to most fairways, so unless you blocked off the entire side, there isn't much that can be done. Hopefully everyone will be on the other side at the car show. If not it won't be any different than playing in all the other public parks we play in every Event, except the CRUCIBLE where we have to deal with other park patrons.

I'm sure it will be fine and will only affect my group, as is the usual happenstance if I'm playing anywhere, so everyone else should be ok.

We have a nice park, and a nice pavilion with water and restrooms and plenty of Daylight - and I will promise that unless we have weather delays that we will be out of the park WAAAAAAYYYY before 8:28 PM.

Since we start early, d-golfers should take up most of the parking. This should deter most pedestrians and dog walkers. All of the other events scheduled for this weekend take place on the other side of the street or at North GA tech, so we should be good to go. Stay tuned on the tee boxes, but most likely, they will be a bit rough (just like the other 2/3 of shots in d-golf)...

First person to call Keith gets my spot... 305-720-8422. He is leaving for the course in 2 hours and will not have access to check his PM's so you will need to call him.

Have fun!

2nd round started 2:15
Last card came in at 4:52
Brett and I turned the board and broke ties for divisional payouts,
Made 9 CTP payouts,
Had 5 50/50 tickets drawn,
Paid out 39 people including all 6 ladies and all 3 juniors (of 69 total players players)
Last person to leave the pavilion before I starting packing up was 5:59
I loaded everything, cleaned the pavilion, pickup all the OB flags and caution tape from the 4 holes they were on and left park at 7:06
Got home at 8:32 PM

1 hour and 7 minutes from last card in til last person was paid out, and had left the park!

Not to shabby for a 2 person team!

Scores after dinner.

Thanks to everyone who came out to play, and to Matthew Mashburn and Katie for their hospitality!

Great show as always, and I commented to someone myself that we were all out of there earlier than normal, excellent job!

Quick question for Keith and/or Chris P.... The Solstice pro shop seems to not have any items other than the boss and a few GSSS items for sale, will that change or be fixed for those that have vouchers to redeem on Monday, or is that what they have to select from?

Results are up!

http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=8444

The Solstice Pro Shop has whatever is in there, I have nothing to do with what he has, but it usually a pretty good selection.
GSSS merch will not be updated until Chris can get to it, and he'll have the updated list from me tomorrow before noon.

Remember he is running the A-Tier in Birmingham today AND tomorrow, so I don't know when he will have things finalized.

The vouchers are good until August 6th, so there is PLENTY of time to cash them in.

My goal is to have EVERYONE GONE within 1&1/2 hours from last card in, and usually (except the CRUCIBLE where we are right at 1&1/2 working in the dark) that goal is beaten.

Thanks again to everyone!

Kudos to Keith and his family for another smooth and successful event. I don't know what Keith's occupation is, but if I had to guess it would be Wedding Planner  Thanks again for all the time and effort that the coordinators and helpers put into the events. JC

Thanks to Keith and whoever dropped their spot and gave me the opportunity to play! That was a fun course and the local boys are some good dudes! Mash, Hugh, Sprinkles, and Beavers were very hospitable hosts. I had a great time and will definately be back!

Thanks Keith and Family for another quality event. Your tireless efforts are appreciated and it was real nice to have the disc golf course filled with players the entire day for all to see the sport grow up north. Props to the Meeks Crew, the Recreation Dept, and all that helped to make the course look so good as well!

After the tournament, did anyone pick up a GSSS full color Buzzz? We just cleaned out the van and Griffin realized that he left it there while'st rummaging through Wes' trailer. Please shoot me a pm if you picked up the straggler.
