Cherokee Ability Games - Year number 2!

The Cherokee County Disc Golf Club has been asked to help out!!!!!

I am working with Dave Martinez, of CAPE. He is the State Coordinator for Georgia Adapted Physical Education and is the National Standards Certified Adapted Physical Educator Special Olympics Co-coordinator for the Cherokee County School District.

If anyone is interested in helping out on this most excellent opportunity for Cherokee County Disc Golf, please contact me ASAP. Estimated number of kids will be 10-15.

This intramural program will take place at Buffington Educational Service Center during the following dates and times:

Saturday April 25th 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Buffington
Saturday May 9th 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Buffington
Saturday May 16th 10:00 a.m. - Time TBA Cherokee Lanes

I am looking for volunteers to teach and play disc golf April 25th & May 9th. May 16th is optional for us but it still is a good time to work with them. So if you like to bowl, we are invited :)

Please contact me via cell or email at Vice-President@discgolfatlanta.com if you are interested in making a difference in someones life!

Jay,

I will let Mike know about this again this year to see if he and the boys can come out and help. I know we are both gonna be in Nashville for the first one, and I will be at Deerlick for the second, but he and one of the boys may be able to make it?

If anyone is in the Canton area and can come by for this, it really makes an impression on some of these kids and their families. It may not seem like much when you are out there helping, but it is cool to see how some of them react when they make a 10' putt, its like they just chained a 60' putt for the tourney win!

Its all putting and shots less than 100' so ANYBODY can help, you just have to have patience.

This Sat Toccoa, May 9th GSSS #3 at Deerlick, makes it a little tough to help for me.

I thought he was one of the participants - he is nubbed after all. I think he has a good shot of finishing in the top three...

Nubby? That's pretty clever, really, I don't know how you came up with that. That's on the same level as the "is he one of the participants" jokes. At least you guys are bringing in some quality humor to a thread that is asking people to do something worthwhile. It sure would suck to have a thread like this cluttered up with unoriginal, borderline distasteful (considering the topic at hand) jokes. I guess we should count our blessings.

This past Saturday was the first weekend of the Cherokee County Abilities Games. Special PROPS to Steve, Andrea, Tyler, and Tim for give their time and energy in order to make a special day for others!

Pictures and videos to follow soon, or maybe at the end of the games!

Tyler and Tim invented "Disc Bowling" on Saturday which was a big hit! Hope to get more video of this at the next session!

Thanks All!

I have 2 volunteers for this weekend: Tyler & Tim.

Sure could use 1 or 2 more volunteers if you can find the time. Lets go Cherokee County Disc Golfers......we just need 2 hours of your time please.

I want to extend a great big thanks to Tyler, Tim, Michael, Mikey and Lorie for “donating” their Saturday morning to the Athletes of The Cherokee County Abilities Games. I really appreciate the fact that you all made a difference in each kids life, even if it was just for a couple of hours. The joy and happiness that these students have, can be a lesson to each and every one of us who take day to day activities for granted. Good times, great people!

Way to set the example for others to follow!

Remember…..Good things happen to good people!

Wish you could have made it out, Jay. We changed it up a bit and had 40 people throw discs at Tim. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Dave was very excited this year because all you guys came out to spend time with the kids. He is in the second year of this program, which has started a new national trend.

Dave was nominated for a County Award for his efforts with this program. He won County and was nominated for State. He won State and was nominated for the National Award......yes, he won the National award as well!

So now he travels the country giving seminars about the benefits of the Games (which includes Disc Golf), so it's definately some good exposure for his games and disc golf.

He sent me an email this week and they are interested in installing an ADA Approved Disc Golf Course in the future :) How cool is that! 8) When he briefs the State later this year, he has asked me (or one of us) to stand in for 10-15 minutes to discuss disc golf for his games.....

Excellent start for the CCDGC!

thanks again for all the help!

Dave Martinez of the Cherokee County Ability Games was selected as a Class Act Teacher and 11 Alive News did a segment on the Adapted PE Program.

It will air Monday 0640 am and 12 noon. Check it out - it featues a frisbee launcher he built for students with more severe disabilities.

He also specifically mentioned ADGO and Cherokee Disc Golf Club in his interview. Lets hope it makes the 2 minute long segment!

It's not long, but you have to check out the home-made disc launcher he made for the kids!
