N.E.1-UP.4 coursework this weekend?

Postby O4PETESAKE » Thu Apr 09, 2009 8:17 pm

Eh, we did some awesome work on #5's tee box last saturday. I am anxious to work on some other ones, perhaps #8 or #15. This course ain't gonna perfect itself, although it's pretty close to begin with. Anyone think they can make it ?

Easter weekend.

The park will be extremely crowded on Saturday. The countywide Easter egg hunt is being held at White Oak this year.

The local tv station (local access channel 16) is going to be out there filming. They will be doing a special on the Disc Golf course around noon or so than film the Easter egg hunt.

Come on out early and maybe you can get in on a shot or two!!

Maybe I will go diving for some plastic instead then. Boy those kids will freak out when they see Swamp Thing instead of the Easter Bunny.

So,
If anyone is interested to know, I talked with Jason H. about dong coursework this weekend 04/19, Sunday. We plan to be out there around lunchtime to do a bit of touch-up on 5 and 18's tee boxes. Possibly doing some pathway forging across the ditches on 12 and/or 5.
2 weeks ago was my first time helping out with White Oak course work, and It felt good to get some progress made, plus this gives me a small sense of "ownership". I can't wait for this course to be 'tournament ready' .Hopefully more people will start to come out and take some pride in one of the best courses around. I'll check this thread regularly, so post a reply if you want to pitch in. See you out there!

Kinda funny how the word "dong" got your attention . Maybe you could help out by bringing a tool, instead of acting like one. Ha!

I don't know Keith, but yer fowl; putting his size out there like that. Anyways, as long as he wants to help, and can swing a pick, or dig with a shovel, he would be huge in my book.

N.E.1-UP.4 coursework this weekend 04/25 ?

Postby O4PETESAKE » Tue Apr 21, 2009 11:18 am

I borrowed a gas powered auger, so who is ready to knock down all 18 tee pads this weekend?
I am not sure how long I will have access to the equipment, so if nobody can make it, I will just level the pads out myself (with the exception of #4)

I plan to be at the park early on Saturday 04/25 10am-ish. I hope some other folks can make it at some point, but I plan to be there all day. If Sunday happens to work better for anyone, I should be free to help then as well. My main goal is to level as many tee-pads as possible, and other than that I am looking at some fairway improvements on hole #10.

There are still a lot of dead trees still standing on 10 and 11. Bear in mind, though, that dead dogwoods
are hard to handsaw.

Thanks to Wade and Dale for helping with tee pad work this weekend. I Ran out of time to get #12 and #17, but I hope that I will get out there again this coming weekend. Wade said Deerlick has a doubles tourney this Sunday, so I would imagine I will be out at White Oak on Saturday.

I want to level the tees on 12 and 17. This will get us as far as we can go with tees until the resources are available to build the pad for #4. Other than that, I want to put a path through the swamp on 12, and move dead trees out of 10's fairway ( chainsaw would be great if anybody has one ). I will try to be out there around 10am-late this saturday, so if anyone wants to help, I appreciate all the help we can get.

Hey guys, I was out there yesterday and the work looks great. I only wish I could get out there more often but the drive is a bit long and this weekend is already full. I did notice that the tee for 15 is holding water, or was, as it is muddy for the front couple of feet. I didnt have any tools or i would have tried to add a little dirt back and smooth out. shouldn't take but a few minutes to touch it up, so no one else slips like i did.

Thanks again to you guys and ALL volunteer disc golfers who help make the courses what they are! I spoke to a local beginner out there and he wondered why the park was doing one or two tees at a time and why THEY weren't finishing, and I politely told him that the park was gracious enough to give the land and help with the baskets, but that the work being done to upkeep and improve the course was mostly done by volunteers for free, and he was a bit shocked. Anyway, keep it up, it IS appreciated!

Good job and thank you guys! I really appreciatd the new teepads yesterday. Only minus
was that it looked like 16 was moved over. We had to shoot that down as the shot from
the new pad would've been pretty bogus. I should be able to make it out for a little Saturday
if you're doing more work.

Mike, Wade, and myself thought it was a better spot than being right under the landing zone for 12's errant throws. Where else might we go for now, until the island is given to us by the parks dept. ?

Mike was with us last night and agreed that the new position was bad. Errant shots on 12 may
possibly go near 16's pad, but they wouldn't be the norm imo.

I am pretty tired, think I'll just golf instead of work this weekend. I don't know if anyone else has a schedule/agenda to improve #4's teepad, but that project is probably a bit outside of my scope.

Pete,

Wade and I plan on digging the long positions for hole #2 and Hole #8 on Sunday. Other than that I think an off week is a good call.

I also want to place a mailbox in between hole #1 and #7 with scorecards/maps. If we have the energy we will try to put that in on Sunday also.

It works! my father-in-law used to park an old El Camino on a low spot and it ended up getting it stuck after some heavy rains. After the land dried out a bit he dump some of mix and raked it in. He did it a couple times and after one particularly heavy rain the car barely made tracks in the ground.

I will be up for some course work out there this week or weekend for those interested. I think 4petesake said he would be out of town? If someone who knows what NEEDS to be done will show up or can get in touch with me and have a specific agenda, I will try to make a day of it, maybe two, to get a lot of work done and help get it ready for the USDGC qualifier #1. I may not be able to make it on Sat or Sun, but will make it for a day sometime in the next week and a half!

What do you have in mind Pete?

Want to put in 17's alternate position?

I was also thinking about clearing the "tall grass" on hole 12

or

thinning out the "shule" on hole 8.

Let me know what sounds good.

I was thinking my industrial strength 'Round Up' would work well on 12's grass, but the effect will take a week or so to be observed. I have enough to try the same on 8's shule, though it might only make dried out shule.
I am all for "relief" pin placement on 17, but lets get a round of golf in prior to digging the hole.
I'll try to be out there between 9:30 and 10, and my day is wide open. Nick said he would come, and I'll see about contacting Wade.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 3rd is set for a work day to improve the tee pads at "the W"

The goal is to spread Crusher Run gravel into the red clay where the tee pads are and compact it so that it actually will be a grippy surface, but not build it up so much that it moves around and forward like at ERP.

The Oct 17th thing, and the Fright Flight Events will give it a good test to see how it works and if it needs constant maintenance, or if it will only need to be addressed once in a while like I'm thinking should be the case if it is done right.

If we can get 6-8 people there we can work in 2 man teams to load the golf cart and work on a couple of pads at a time while getting the next cart loaded, and we can trade teams out so everyone is not always shoveling or always compacting.

After the lunch we could play a round of doubles to check them out if we can still lift our arms up.

I am going to bring lunch for all the people who come help Oct 3rd- stadium dogs, and chips, beans, drinks

*we probably should plan on building a wooden frame for 4's tee pad, but thankfully #18 has one already. All the others should be fine as is, be it a temporary fix. Just stating the obvious, but someone needs to come up with lumber then.

Sorry - I was already looking at the 2010 calendar for the GSSS and had it on the table when posting.

SATURDAY OCTOBER THIRD 2009 Work Day at "the W"

See above Keith Johnson post for info.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can make it out to help!

It is so awesome that this is finally going to happen. I can't wait to get these pads done so we can stop worrying about the rain so much.

Just #s 11,13,16,&17 still need gravel. I will not have any opportunity to help with coursework for the next month or so, unless after work on a weeknight, but I just know someone else will help ready the teepads before Fright Flight.
