I noticed the 165-169s are now sold out. I wanted to make sure two of those were mine just in case I missed out.

Yes, I took them off in the order ordered.

I will let anyone know if they are asked for, but not available, as I am on the board VERY sporadically during working hours.

Is there a decent hotel for a decent price somewhere near the venue? I plan on coming up Friday afternoon from Lilburn with the family and need a place to stay that won't scare my wife (or me).

There are two Holiday Inn's right on the edge of downtown (walking distance to restaurants and "nightlife") - the Holiday Inn Express is probably reasonably priced - or there is a brand new Hilton Garden Inn on the same block as my apartment in the middle of downtown that is probably not so reasonably priced... also a Best Western Colonial Inn and a Travelodge about 8 blocks down off of Milledge Ave. that I have had family stay at that might be cheaper since it is farther away.
Anything else in Athens that is outside of the downtown radius of about 10 blocks though... I can say is likely to be reasonably sketchy and scare your wife and kids. Do a googlemaps search for hotels, Athens, GA and you can get the numbers for those ^^ ... hope that helps somebody!

There is also the Microtel, that we stay at every trip to Athens, if you don't wish to be Downtown, that is less than 15 minutes from the course on the loop.

Mention the PDGA discount rate of 54.99. It is also close to restaurants and movies as well as everyone's favorite - Wal Mart

This is a gentle reminder to the players for EVENT #1:

The following 19 players are not current with the PDGA for 2009, and have until 2/9/09 to renew with the PDGA or pay an extra $10 at the CRUCIBLE on the 14th - NO EXCEPTIONS as I have to pay the PDGA $10 for every NON current player at the Event. Almost half are pros. and half of that half are Georgia's team members.

If you know any of these players who do not frequent the message board, please pass along this info.
Thanks in advance for your consideration.

I wish to give a public HUGE thanks to Doug Porter and Flying Eye for the use of the Baskets and Pads for the GSSS Event, as well as all the local Athenites who are helping me to prep the course so that it is ready for everyone in 10 Days and 8 hours from now.

Please show your respect to the course and the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department by NOT being on the course when the gate is closed.

Info about POSSIBLE Friday the 13th doubles will be posted here.

More info as it becomes available.

Sorrells Pit BBQ will again be doing the lunch for the players at the CRUCIBLE to purchase. I spoke with the head guy earlier today and they are looking forward to providing food and drinks for the disc golfers again!

They are the same ones that provided the EXCELLENT BBQ for the Inaugural GSSS at the CRUCIBLE in 2008 as well as the last few Flying Eye tournaments.

They will be set-up and have the food hot and ready when we come off the course after the first round, so we'll be able to get the second round started with enough time to finish in the daylight!

They will also have veggie dogs and burgers available as well as drinks, so that no one has to hunt for lunch and worry about missing the start of the second round.

I'll be off to set up the course tomorrow and POSSIBLY on Friday the 13th some local Athenite will be there around Noon to open the gate for anyone who wishes to practice or play doubles. THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE! The CRUCIBLE is a TEMPORARY COURSE and not open to the public. The Sandy Creek Course is public and available to play if you are in town early.

THE CRUCIBLE COURSE WILL NOT BE OPEN TO ANYONE FOR ANY PLAY BEFORE FRIDAY THE 13TH AT NOON AT THE EARLIEST.

Anyone disobeying this strict order from the park will be subject to trespassing and could be arrested.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

Proposed payouts with number of players per division staying as they are now.
Remember that PROS will get NO players packages and have added cash to the purse instead, while AMS will have players packages AND CTP's in addition to their payout at each Event. Also keep in mind that I'll be paying at least 50% of the field in each division, as well as having surprise giveaways at all Events.
Hopefully if players BUY GSSS Merchandise, we can keep these high percentage payouts going for EVERYONE.
With larger cash sponsorships MUCH harder to come by in this economy, I'm hopeful that anyone who can afford to will purchase any of the GSSS Merchandise that will be available at Tournament Central.

Thanks in advance,
Keith

Course is set up -

Thanks to RYAN ADAMS who came out and helped set up baskets, mats, and wooden tee signs.

All of the fairways are cleaned and have ALOT of dead trees and branches moved out of the way.
Now Woody will only have to lift his cart over 1 log (hole13 if he goes down the fairway) on the entire course.
Every other log crossing the fairway is gone. The GREEN on 15 has also been cleaned of leaves to make it more fair as the leaves can be quite skippy and a good shot should not be punished 25 feet from the creek. I also spent over and hour cleaning the debris that was blocking the creek behind 15 and where is crosses the fairway by the basket to help with water flow to keep the creek clear and LOW to make it easier to retrieve errant shots, as the leaves and branches blocking the water kept the creek muddy and deep.
The only issues i can forsee are going to be on 6/7/8/15 and 16, where you'll need to keep a REAL GOOD EYE on EVERY SHOT in the woods as the leaves are pretty thick.

PLEASE REMEMBER NOT to Mapquest SANDY CREEK PARK - use the link here as it takes you right to the gate for the CRUCIBLE Course.
Directions - http://www.athensdiscgolf.com/CrucibleDirections.html (DO NOT Mapquest Sandy Creek Park)

Please also remember the CHECK-IN and Meeting times are EARLY due to daylight issues(there are NO LIGHTS at the park).
Anyone NOT checked in by 8:15 will NOT play! Please give yourselves time to make it to the course Saturday morning.
Saturday check-in - THERE IS NO WAIT LIST! 7:30-8:15AM
Players Meeting 8:20 AM
1st round tee-off 8:50 AM

Info on the possibility of Friday the 13th Doubles will be posted as soon as possible.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday the 14th - EARLY in the morning.

Ryan was not the only Athens guy help with baskets and tee pads.

Jon Morgan, Jamey Tinch, and Doug Poter all helped.

Thank all of your helpers lest ye be helpless. Just joking Keith, not taking a shot more like poking fun :D

I got off work Friday so I will be a local Athenite available to open the gates and/or run doubles (although anyone else is welcome to that will be there or coming in from ATL)
So I guess just whoever cares can decide what time?

I wish to give a public HUGE thanks to Doug Porter and Flying Eye for the use of the Baskets and Pads for the GSSS Event, as well as all the local Athenites who are helping me to prep the course so that it is ready for everyone in 10 Days and 8 hours from now.

Please show your respect to the course and the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department by NOT being on the course when the gate is closed.

Info about POSSIBLE Friday the 13th doubles will be posted here.

More info as it becomes available.

I also gave Ryan gifts for all of you that helped out, as well as thanking Jon personally at "theP" on Sunday(didn't know he would be there), as I ALWAYS acknowledge and appreciate my local helpers! See all of you Saturday.

Keith,

Is there any chance that we can check in early on Friday? Just trying to get that extra 20 minutes of sleep on Saturday morning. Thanks for the tournament and any information.

With who?

I'm not going to be getting there until Friday evening, so check-in can't happen until Saturday morning. Sorry
You can always just show up early Saturday morning and sleep in the car until the players meeting.

The only Event I can do Friday check-in at is Central as I am only 1/2 hour away from work to there. Everywhere else I am at least 1&1/2 hours away, which negates leaving work at 5pm and getting to any courses to do Friday check-ins.

1 spot has opened up for Event #1 at the CRUCIBLE.

The FIRST PM or Email by Time stamp will get the spot, and you may pay at check-in with cash on Saturday morning.

I will be there at 1 oclock - doubles will begin at 3 oclock unless there are any major objections posted here. So if you want to see the course before doubles, I will be opening the gates at 1. If anyone else wants to run doubles please speak up here, otherwise I will just be there to do it. Yay crucible!

I had made a nice post about Rachel being gracious enough to run doubles, but got sidetracked with phone calls at work and when I wen to post, I had been logged off.

To add to Rachel's post -

PLEASE REMEMBER YOU MUST PAY $2 TO PLAY THE CRUCIBLE COURSE WHICH GOES TO SANDY CREEK PARK. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE RACHEL ASK YOU TO LEAVE.

Also please remember this is a temp course, so please RESPECT the park department and keep it clean. DO NOT leave any trash on the course - please bring it up to the shack where there are trash bags located.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

See everyone EARLY Saturday morning.

This is a gentle reminder to the players for EVENT #1:

The following 10 players are not current with the PDGA for 2009, and will have to pay an extra $10 at the CRUCIBLE on the 14th - NO EXCEPTIONS - as I have to pay the PDGA $10 for every NON current player at the Event. Over half are pros.

If you know any of these players who do not frequent the message board, please pass along this info.
Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Postby Moose » Sat Feb 14, 2009 11:15 am

Ok so the wife says to me about 2 months ago that she and her mom have a trip planned to Raleigh with the kids and it happens to fall on Valentines weekend. I tell her "no problem" then go in search of a tournament. I see the first of the GSSS falls on Valentine's day but dad gummit it is already full and there is NO WAITLIST. I ask a few people about this and what happens to spots if people don't show and I am told they go empty. So as I sit here in the mist on Saturday morning alone I get a little pissed off when I see Woody in the tournament and I know he didn't sign up in time. How exactly does this work. Did Woody build you something Kieth? a bird house or finely sanded birdseye maple club for killing prey....? Sounds to me like some under the table loving going on. What if the person who's spot Woody got shows up on the day of the tourny? What do I need to do to get into some of this bogus action? Mr.disc...your response is not required here

Keith,

i could be wrong, but I don't think the round ratings are correct. There are several Int. and Rec. players that had 1000 rated rounds. I shot a 65 and it's not rated over 1000. I looked at the last several tourneys and that round should be atleast 1006. Just sayin.

OK boys and girls - Time for the GSSS Chronicles from Valentine's Day Event #1 at the CRUCIBLE.

Day starts out in with a light rain at 6:30AM when I arrive at the course, but according to the Weather Channel and the radar it is supposed to stop before 9AM.
People start checking in at 7:30 but by 8:05 only about 25 of the 72 have checked-in.
At 8:15 all but 1 person have checked in and for the first time at any GSSS Event - no one is standing around "Waiting to see if some one doesn't show up".
At 8:25 I start the players meeting in a misty drizzle, not one of the new GSSS players knows Lorelei's birthday number or PDGA # - missing out on a 50 dollar prize package - also someone asks if there are baggies for the scorecards, and I inform him that it won't be raining so we don't need baggies.
We start Round 1 at 9AM where Kevin McCoy shoots a course record 57 nailing almost every putt from 60ft and in missing only 3, Brett Rousseau aces Hole 12 with a driver taking the ACE/EAGLE fund of 38 dollars, :D and Matlack again (did it also at Flying Eye) eagles hole 3, :D but unfortunately is NOT in the ACE/EAGLE fund. :?

We have a great lunch again served up by Sorrells BBQ and Brett and I discover there are a few Advanced players that failed math.

We start the second players meeting by reminding everyone to double and triple check their scores, to not be penalized, BUT...to be continued later....as well as asking everyone to please bring in the GSSS TSigns on their last hole and to make sure to stick around for the 50/50 drawing if they bought tickets or if they were going to be coming in the top half of thier division to be winning cash or merch.
The sun shines through for most of the 2nd round but keeping with the usual for most GSSS Events still almost ZERO wind.
We finish the round at 5:30 and continuing the trend from the first round discover that Advanced players just hated math class in school, as a couple more errors were made and cost 1 person some merch dollars.
After Brett works some ties money splitting magic we do the CTP Giveaways, the Basket Raffle/EDGE 50/50 drawing with 5 tickets drawn, with the 50/50 wuinner being Mike Trello picking up 85 bucks!
Everyone gets paid and leaves happily - and after Brett and Wes help with the teardown we drive away locking the gate behind us to head home.

Then Valentine's Day takes that dramatic turn that all the guys who played the Event had wished would happen to me - as hitting a pothole on Nowhere road 1 mile from the course the right side tires (yes both tires) are blown out. Having only 1 spare tire, things don't look to good. I drive on the flat tires to the curve in the road where there is a light and enough pavement to be out of the road completely. After thinking we are going to get the car towed to Walmart and stay overnight in Athens to get the tires changed, I unload the back of the van to get the jack out to change the front tire which has now come almost completely off the rim so we can try and at least get to Daneilsville road as we have no cell service on most of Nowhere road for some reason. After getting the spare on the front I'm now starting to load the van back up as a guy and a preacher from Dothan, Alabama pull up and offer assistance. It happens that the guy owns an auto repair paint and body shop and he has tires from wrecked cars at the shop - He offers to drive all of us to the shop, where he changes the tire and drives us back to the van where we changed the back tire. The preacher that was with him was in Athens to give a sermon on Sunday and he was getting his car's water pump changed by the mechainc who was driving him to get the water pump from the parts store when they came across us.
I ask him what do I owe him and he says nothing, he was HAPPY to help.
At this point I'm hearing banjo music, so I peel out of the parking lot, spraying him, his car, and the preacher with gravel from the raod widening project. (I made that part of the story up  )
I practically and literally force him to take 50 bucks for his troubles and thank him profusely for his efforts and time to help us out, as I was envisioning the worst - worst case scenario at 7:45PM when the tires blew out.

Finally to end this sililoqy we arrive home safe and sound at 11:30 PM and I got both tires replaced today (Sunday) at Walmart in Alpharetta for 42 bucks (1 free & 1 1/2 price due to wear).

A HUGE THANKS TO DAWN AND LORELEI for their help, BRETT PORTER for his scoring help, all the ATHENS people for their course setup and contact help, and last but not least - all the players who came out and played the Event as it is because of you all why I do what I do in the first place.

Lastly, just to be safe from now on I'm moving all the remaining GSSS Events to Sequoyah which is only 3 &1/2 miles from my house and I can walk home if need be.

Just kidding!

Apparently I failed at math twice along with every one in my group. With a score that high I am not surprised. John gayer left his brand new stool next to Doug's car on Sunday before doubles, Someone picked it up. If it was you please return it. Even though I should probably never play disc golf again I had a great time and will see you soon for another demonstration of how not to play.

Thanks for a great Tournament Keith! Will the round ratings for intermediate be determined later after the PDGA processes them?

Great event, thanks to Keith and family and the Athens gang. It was my first event on this course and I cannot wait for the next one.

It looks like there wasn't enough propagators that had ratings, so they might not be.

I'll ask Chuck Kennedy if they can be done.

When I talked to Chuck before the JPMIB, I was informed that 5 rounds with propagators with the same layout would get an official rating. The Intermediates have 4 x 2 rounds.

I was also told by phone that the 8 propagator limit was only for unofficial not official results therefore any round that meets the above requirement will receive official ratings on March 17th.

Chuck34
You need at least 5 members with ratings over 799 whose rating is based on at least 8 rounds (called propagators). You can get away with just 3 if the same course layout is played at least twice (2x3>5).

Knowing that some of the Intermediate players may be curious about their round rankings, I asked Keith if I could post the numbers for you. This is the best I can do without a hole by hole breakdown but I think it will be close.

Intermediate Layout
SSA= 57.03

Scott Vaughn = 61 / 966, 60 / 975
Steven Trello = 73 / 864, 69 / 898
Matthew Mashburn = 70 / 889, 72 / 872
Chris VanDijk = 73 / 864, 73 / 864
Nathan Skinner = 76 / 838, 74 / 855
Brian Powell = 79 / 813, 79 / 813

Scott Vaughn Averaged 970.50. That is a very impressive Intermediate Day

Thanks, by far my best yet! (if those numbers are right...) Much better than my 900.0 average one week earlier at the Perkerson IB, which was a terribly crappy Advanced Day. I can't seem to figure it out...

You won by 21 strokes - so I would guess the numbers are pretty accurate as with that SSA each stroke is worth about 8-9 ratings points and your 9 stroke difference in the second round over Steven trello was by 77 ratings points.

Ratings are pretty accurate I would say.

I guess my question was not about the difference in the ratings of the rounds but where the SSA actually came from and how accurate it is. Were the middle tees really only 7.5 strokes easier than the longs (SSA around 64.5)? My guess is that the SSA is a little lower and my ratings lower but I do admit I have only a fuzzy understanding of how the ratings are formed for divisions like this.

It's possible as the Mid tees were approximately 2400 feet shorter in distance as well as easier lines with less OB strokes coming into play, so it's not too far fetched.

Remember also you are an IMPROVING 927 Rated player, who will be over 935 and into the advanced range when the next ratings come out, so that along with good play would equal the results seen on Saturday.

Total numbers form the TD Report sent to the PDGA - Sorry that the numbers couldn't be higher, but in this economy, it is tougher to get sponsorships than it was in the past.
Hopefully I can get some more individual Tsign sponsorships and sell some more merchandise for Events 2-6 to help with making the payouts nicer.

Not that 178% and 194% aren't overly nice already.

Summary of Players, Entry Fees, & Payout
Total Players 71
PROFESSIONALS
Total Pro Cash Purse Paid Out $2,150
Total Pro Net Entry Fees $1,140 189%
Net Cash Added to Purse $1,010

Pro Player Packs - $ Value
Pro Trophies - $ Value
Other Pro Prizes $ (CTPs etc) $60
Pro Event Value $2,210 194%
AMATEURS & JUNIORS
Total Am/Jr Net Entry Fees $1,366
Am/Jr Prizes + Trophies - $ Value $1,680
Am/Jr Player Packs - $ Value $598
