The 2008 Atlanta Open will be a USDGC qualifier :o

I just got official word from Innova that we were selected to host one of only 15 USDGC qualifiers nationwide. This is a huge opportunity for Atlanta disc golfers and disc golf in GA as a whole. The top five final scores from the Pro divsions (those divisions playing the same tees on the same course) will qualify for the USDGC. Those players who at that point have already qualified or are exempt will not count as the final five.

Get ready there will be a lot more to come. The Atlanta Open will send five qualifiers to the USDGC in 2008.

Imran and I will have the flyer with more specifics up asap. Stay tuned.

That is HUGE Rand!!!

I think it will draw in ALOT of out-of state players to the AO, maybe even making it more of a challenge for the Georgia golfers to qualify.

The Georgia's guys BETTER make sure to signup early to keep those out- of state guys at bay.

The AO

Postby Imran » Wed Nov 07, 2007 3:14 pm

Just to give you some more insight, the USDGC qualifier for the Southeast has been locked up in Florida for the past 10 years! This is the first time it has been outside of Florida in a decade. So, all the Florida boys wanting to qualify early will be making their way into Atlanta in April. Also, I believe this is the first time that a non-NT event has been selected as a USDGC qualifier. I could be wrong about that, but that’s what I heard.
In other words, this is a HUGE step for Atlanta disc golf. It is a product of our collective efforts in growing disc golf in the area.

I would highly suggest what Keith said. All of the locals need to get in as soon as the flyer is up and online registration is up. Dollar, start saving your money right now! Please don’t wait!
I think this will be the first time that the Pros will out-register the Ams.
Like always, no spots will be held. We already have enough to keep track of.

We have purchased the domain name, www.theatlopen.com. We hope to have this site up and running before the year is out. Once it is up, we will make an announcement and put the link on the front page of www.discgolfatlanta.com. Then it will be your one stop source for all AO info going forward.

P.S. – If you thought this year’s was sick…

Not to take anything away Imran, but a B tier has been a qualifier just about, if not every year - the Southern Nationals Pro Championships

Otherwise, I 100% agree with you on how big of a step this is for golf in the area.

Being one of the earlier qualifiers of the year, all I can say is:
Incoming touring pros.

great job Rand

You will have to play Pro to qualify. Sick burn!

Get in now, especially if you are an AM as there will only be 72 spot available for Ams.

We hope to draw some regional and touring Pros to the AO this year, but I still want to see some local dogs get the USDGC qualifying spots.

Yak...,
You are correct in the sense that other divisions playing the same layout can qualify for the USDGC as well. However, there is a catch.

Here is an excerpt from the 2008 USDGC Qualifying Procedures:
"The top five (5) overall scores will earn an invitation to compete. Other divisions may be eligible to qualify if they are competing during identical days and course layouts as competitors in the Open Division. This is to be determined by each tournament director at his or her respective qualifying event."

Although the Ams will be playing the same weekend as the Pros, they will not be playing the same course on the same day as the Pros. Ams will be at Central on Saturday while the Pros will be at ERP; vica-versa on Sunday. Therefore, this does not fit the USDGC specifications for Ams to qualify. I will get clarification from the USDGC, but I'm pretty sure that Ams will not be eligible. If I have read the procedures wrong and Ams are eligible, we will set the Am layout identical to the Pros so that they have a chance at qualifying. But, don't hold your breath...

Good question.

The 2008 disc golf year is here. Renew your PDGA memberships and get your entry fees into me for the AO. Lots of $ will be on the line for all divisions.

Take advantage of two great courses. ERP and Keith Johnson's "Super Sized" Central (tee pads for Int and women will vary). SIgn up online or mail me your checks. We are just three months away from the 4th Atlanta Open.

You don't have the arm for it Tim.

Just kidding.

The "supersized" layout is using ALL the land of the 27 holes at Central, but having some combined holes for true par 4's and a par 5 to make the course a very challenging 18 holes, where shot placement and accuracy as much as distance will be in play.

It is close to the course layout that will be used for the USDGC qualifier for Georgia later in the year. Shot selection will be key to shooting well.

Trust me, you will like the course much better than all blue.

I'll be joing you in GM in 2010.
It will be set up for doubles on Friday.

The course layout requires some basket removals and flagged tees in some locations, but on the bright side, only 3 people know the layout and only 1 of them plays in your division. So nobody will have a "real" advantage that doesn't see it for doubles on Friday.

It is actually giving the Georgia guys who play the AO a little peak before the USDGC qualifier later in the year, but it will have a few different holes then to still not be a huge advantage even for that event.

Hopefully I'll see you at some events this year.

FYI, I saw this on the 2008 PDGA Tour Guidelines. Is this new?

Courses are required to be setup for the first round configuration a minimum of 48 hours prior to the start of the event for National Tours and 24 hours prior to the start of the event for SuperTours. In the case of temporary holes and/or courses where baskets are unavailable, the
temporary configuration must be clearly marked.

Not really new, just a little more emphasis.

The PDGA has been trying to get away from their bigger events being run on temp courses, and if an event is using them they wanted it to be fair to all players by at least having it marked so EVERYONE can see where the tees and targets will be so they could practice the course.

Alot of times things would not be set up until the morning of the event which was a huge disadvantage to anyone from out of the area that didn't know where the tees and targets would be.

I like that they are "trying" to get more compliance with this, and it hopefully will keep travelling players going to the top events.

That's funny. I didn't get any info from the USADGC and I'm pretty sure Rand didn't either. I just talked to him earlier today.

I just checked their website and it appears that we are.

So, BONUS for the AMs! Looks like they will be competing for also a spot in the USADGC.

AO Filling Up

Postby Randgolf » Thu Feb 07, 2008 11:10 am

Greetings from Mobile!

Just signed up to play Advanced.

Question though, if I get a wild hair and want to play Open as the tournament nears and the Open pool has not filled, will it be possible to switch?

Looking forward to my first golfing in ATL!

PLAYERS PARTY & FLYMART

Postby Imran » Sat Feb 16, 2008 1:56 am

PLAYERS PARTY and FLYMART!

Saturday Night - April 5th (6pm till close)

Startime Entertainment
608 Holcomb Bridge Rd.
Roswell GA. 30076

Players Party
Those who haven’t been here, this place is really nice. They have a huge bar with plasma screens all over. There are numerous pool tables, dart boards, arcade games, putt-putt, some sort of bumper car lacrosse, a movie theatre, and even a comedy club. They have something for everyone.

Here’s how it will work. When you walk in, go to the service desk and tell them that you are competing or a guest of the Atlanta Open Disc Golf Tournament. The attendant will then give you a wristband. Special rates are only applicable to registered AO competitors, AO staff, and VIP guests.

This wristband entitles you to the following special prices and benefits:
- Complimentary billiards and darts
- Double value on funcards (these cards can be used for games, putt-putt, bumper cars, and other in-house entertainment.).

- 10% discount on all food.

The following drink specials:
-Pitchers of Bud, Bud light, Bud Select, Coor's Light, Miller Lite, Michelob Ultra, & Amber Bock for $7
-Pitchers of Bass, Killian's, Newcastle, Red Hook, and Stella for $11.50
-Pitchers of Margaritas for $9.50
-Buckets (5 bottles) of Bud, Bud Light, Bud Select, Coor's Light, and Miller Lite for $10
-Martinis, Jager Bombs, & Car Bombs for $5.50
-Well Drinks for $2

Flymart
The flymart will be setup outside in the back parking lot at the movie entrance.
The following vendors are currently registered for the Flymart:
Deborah's Creative Sewing (embroidery)
Discman DGS
Jason Dowling
Primoplastic
Solstice Disc Sports

Got stuff to sell? Be a Vendor at the Flymart!
Contact Imran for details.

Awards Ceremony will probably be at Startime also, but we haven’t finalized that yet.

All of this will soon be posted on www.theatlopen.com along with maps and directions.

Stay tuned for more...

AO Changes

Postby Imran » Mon Feb 25, 2008 5:16 pm

A couple of changes to the AO.

1. Pro Womens format was changed so that they can compete for a spot in the USDGC. They will be playing the same layout as the Pro Men on both courses.

2. ALL players will receive a players pack. Yes, even the Pros.

3. Sponsorship packages at $50+ will have two AO commemorative discs instead of just one. Reserve yours today!

Central Park Layout for Atl Open

Postby Dale H » Tue Mar 11, 2008 5:48 pm

Thanks for posting the layout -- we should have a really challenging round at Central Park. I also think layout may eliminate the bottleneck players typically experience between holes 14 and 15 in traditional layout of previous events.

Thanks!

Dale

Postby Randgolf » Wed Mar 19, 2008 9:04 am

Only 26 spots remain until the Pro field is FULL!

If you would like to play now is the time to get your money in. Time is running out. Less than three weeks and I have several people calling me saying that they are sending money this week, so dont wait around and not get in.

He's such a little JOY!! I have Sunday covered but if I don't find someone for Saturday I won't be able to play... Please... only reliable souls.... I really want to play!!!

I know of a couple of sweat shops that run weekend shifts...

*** All Ams will receive a player’s package. ($25 minimum value)
*** Trophies for all divisions.
*** PDGA membership is required to register for this event.
*** Pre-registration is required.

I see a number of people on the list are not PDGA members. How could they have possibly registered already?

Looks like 7 more spots just opened up.

They have a week to get current with the PDGA. Most of them already have, but trust that I am on them to do it with their spot in the tournament pending. Ryan Renz handles the PDGA registrations and is on that is not listed as current...Patience Grasshopper.

2008 Atlanta Open Video

Postby Imran » Fri Mar 21, 2008 3:55 pm

Yes, Luke and Jordan will be filming that weekend.
We could definitely use more cameras and help on the field.

Ideally, we want as many camera angles as we can get.
I know Luke will not be able to make it Saturday.
Jordan said that he would be there the full weekend, and will film opening ceremonies and competition all day Saturday. If you could bring your video camera, that would be twice as good. I also have a video camera and I know Moose and Rand have one as well. So, if there is anyone else out there who is not playing but would like to help film, we have an extra 3 video cameras available. Just PM Jordan (Brim) or Luke McFarland.
They are heading this up.

Luke will be on site for the Players party on Saturday and would like to do some interviews. He will also be out there all day Sunday. On Sunday, he's looking to film 18 holes of the the last round of the Open lead card.

Luke did the Lake Russell video and has gotten pretty good at figuring out what angles work best. He'd be a good source for some direction on how to film disc golf. You may also want to study the 2006 USDGC video and the 2006 Japan Open video, if you have it or can get a hold of them.

Press release available

Postby 12StonesScott » Mon Mar 24, 2008 12:00 am

If you're aware of a media outlet that might consider publishing or broadcasting info on the Atlanta Open, please let Rand, Imran, or me know. We've prepared a press release promoting the event that we're sending out to the AJC, both of the Roswell papers (Neighbor and Beacon), Creative Loafing, etc. RRPD is also distributing to their usual media contacts. We're also working on getting it to the two major AM sports radio stations.

On hole 1, which light pole(s) are mando(s)?

I heard a couple people mention playing 15 as 13 tee to 14 basket, which sounds like a good hole. Thoughts on that?

I'd like to know which fence post is the mando on hole 2. Do you have to go all the way around the fence or can you cut the corner of the building. If you have to go all the way around that will be a tough 2 and you guys are going to need a spotter.

The mando's will both be clearly marked this Sunday before the doubles so that when people are playing it this time and in preparation for the tournament there will be NO confusion.

On Hole #1 it is the Second light pole (near #2 blue tee - which is why
that tee is the drop zone if you miss the mando) NOT the one with the blue arrow on it
On Hole #2 (original 5) it is the FIRST chain link fence pole closest to the tee pad (on the little 2 foot section of fence - same as for FCO2) so you can throw over the building if you want as long as you pass that point.

And sadly for Jon P and others hole 13 tee-to 14 basket on the slope is not being used for the ATL Open, to allow the finish on Hole 17.

Half of the course is laid out with baskets reflecting designated hole numbers accordingly. Terry Lynch has worked his tail off to make this happen, so when you see him make sure that you thank him. The rest of the course will be set before this weekend. The rope will be put out before doubles.

Can you imagine moving every basket on the course to make this happen? Consider the fact that not every lock just opens no problem. Not to mention moving and installing them alone. Give Terry a high five.

Hey guys, I felt it was time to return to this baka fest to tell everyone......

the course is now set up for the AO.

This sat. is the last chance for a work day but unfortunately I have to work the arts festival at the rec center until 11 am. If anyone wants to come out early about the only things that need done are tee pad work and weed trimming around tee pads, baskets and at hole 3 {original 6} from the trees next to the bridge to past the basket on the tee side of the creek. Anything else I'll try to get while at work. The tee pad work is just smoothing them out and cleaning them up.

And with this arts fest, like any other big event at the park, the parking lot will probably be full and if you don't park in a designated parking place you will get ticketed.

If anyone has any questions just pm me.

Good night and good luck.
Terry Lynch

Hey everyone, it might not be a good idea to have the work day tomorrow because of this art festival. The event planners expect a big turnout. So much so that (as I stated in a previous post) the parking lots will be full (unless mother nature decides otherwise by raining). Even playing a round will be tough since many of the booths are set up next to the rec center right down hole 10's fairway.

So we'll just do the work day on Sunday about 9. Anyone that can make it bring shovels, rakes and weed trimmers. I'll see you at the tree at the first tee.

Mando signs were put up before doubles yesterday, paint lines were marked for hole 4 (original 7) and flags were added for the gym hole (if missing - the tee area is even with the middle of the volleyball courts 5 feet from the sand)

Terry was my partner yesterday for dubs and I showed him all the stuff, plus all the areas that need string for the OB (hole 1, Hole 6[original10], etc.)

Best score in the wind yesterday was a 50 in dubs, looking forward to the singles scores on supersized "lite" by the big guns!

In case I am not the only one with this question!
The flyer and 1st post say doubles will start at 4pm on Friday. Rands post on 3/28 says they will start at 5pm.
In case I can make it , I don't want to come late, so can I get clarification to what time it starts?
Thanks,
Hugh

Rand is running the dubs. If he says it starts at 5, then 5 it is.
Flyer was created months ago. Much has changed since then.
I'd go with the latest info, which is 5pm - start time for dubs.

Saturday's Flymart at Startime

Just to let folks know. Bring your bags, shoulder-straps, chairs (really cool sinse everyone's looks the same), shirts whatever to the flymart (bags sans discs) - my neighbor, Deborah Crittenden, is setting up her equipment and will be doing embroidery at the flymart very reasonably priced. 5 dollars per line - get your name, nick name, PDGA# whatever put on your stuff. Each item takes only 5 to 10 minutes - drop off your stuff and go knock around the other booths.

PM me if you have any questions

Great food for saturday and sunday.... BBQ chicken, some side dishes, check below. Best of both worlds.... (Rand/Imran pm sent following this post)

Edit: Art will not have the Rolly-Polly sandwiches...... it'll be all BBQ, and side dishes, as well as some chicken/sausage Jambalaya (spicy, spicy).
Will have a big batch of taters, carrots, brussel sprouts, cabbage, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and broccoli... all done in the fashion of vegetable soup....just not as much juice as soup would have.

I will start early tournament check-in on Friday, around 1pm or whenever I get there. You can pick up players packs at that time.

It's possible that I may be out at ERP today for doubles and also check people in there. Not sure yet, but possible...

Let the games begin!

Where to begin?

First and foremost I offer my most sincere condolences to the entire Eberhard family!

Second, I would like to sincerely thank all of the people that rallied together to help us make the Atlanta Open a success in the face of tragedy!

Sharon Leyva, without her support I would have never made it! Imran, Grease, Jay Voss, Keith, Ryan, Cuban, Forrest, Mike Dames, Ben, and all the players. Everything that was needed was taken care of by so many people and for this I'm forever grateful!

There are so many folks that helped out that I couldn't possibly name all of you, but you know who you are.

Please help me honor the request made by the Eberhard family, and do not attempt to contact them or send any items via mail to thier home. If there is anything that you need, please contact me via private message here on this board?

As soon as I recieve any details regarding funeral arrangements I will post them here.

Thanks again to the Atlanta disc golf family, Atlanta Open players, City of Roswell, Forsyth County and everyone else that I have not named.

Please note that the 2009 Atlanta Open shall be renamed: "The Drew Eberhard Memorial".
I've been throwing these plastic things for way to long!

Information on arrangements

Postby Moose » Mon Apr 07, 2008 12:02 pm

Rand asked me to post this:

As some of you know, last night, Randy and Susie's youngest son Drew was killed in Alpharetta in a terrible accident. Drew had just stepped out of a cab and was hit by oncoming traffic. He died on impact. Randy and Susie drove back from St. Simons early this morning to be their family and close friends in Alpharetta.

We know many of you have been eager to serve Randy and Susie and help in any way you can. The family has requested that all NW Atlanta visitors wait to see Randy & Susie until Tuesday, as tomorrow will be spent amongst family in preparation for the visitation and funeral.

Monday night, Hollis & Matt Hawkins will be hosting a time of prayer and reflection for Randy and his family from 7-8 p.m. We thought this would be a great opportunity to bring our Young Life "family" together to grieve and pray for Randy, Susie, Rand and Wes. The family will not be present, but will certainly feel our prayers.
Tuesday - Randy and his family will receive visitors both during scheduled visitation hours and at their home. As of now, we are unaware of the time and place of visitation, but we will send another email as soon as we know.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Young Life NW Atlanta and/or Celebrate Recovery, both ministries Randy and his family have been deeply involved with and impacted by. If anyone is interested in providing food or beverages, please contact Dianne McCoy - 770.630.7308 (cell) - 770.339.0117 (home).

The funeral has been scheduled for Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church in Alpharetta. The family will receive visitors following the service at their home. The graveside service will be family only.

Below are pertinent addresses for services and donations in honor of Drew.

I would like to extend my condolences to Rand and his family. I know this is a tough time. You are in my thoughts.

We need to acknowledge Imran Khan for pulling the Atlanta Open together and making it the best tournament ever in Georgia. Imran went without sleep from Saturday morning until Sunday evening and was still able to make the AO a success. I can't say enough about his character and how he stuck to it. Hats off to you Imran!

As I recall, something so far outside your rating will not be figured into your rating (100 points?). As such, it'll be more like an "badge of honor", if you will, more so than effectation of your overall rating...

So, your saying that you don't get a 7 for each hole missed? Are you supposed to get 4 over par for each one missed? If that is the case, well then I've seen numerous times where a 7 was carded b/c someone was late on both par 4's and 5's.

never mind I found it. Mr. 128 it is.

Rule 804.02:
If a player is not present to throw when it is his or her turn, the scorekeeper shall allow 30 seconds. If the player has not thrown after the 30 seconds has elapsed, a score of par plus four is to be entered for that hole. This procedure continues on any subsequent holes for which a player is absent.

I know of a couple of people who were late at Central and were carded a 7 on holes with par greater than three. Guess they got lucky.

Photos from Saturday rounds at ERP on Flickr

Postby 12StonesScott » Sun Apr 13, 2008 11:13 am

I've posted the photos that I was able to shoot during the first and second rounds of the Atlanta Open at ERP on Saturday. Apparently some of the copious rain got inside the camera, as the lens fogged from the inside shortly into the afternoon round, so I was only able to shoot a few before I had to call a halt -- the last shots I got were of Ken Climo trying to figure out the best way to get out from between the last two trailers on #4 -- they were badly fogged and I had to tweak the heck out of them in Photoshop to get them to a point you could even tell what they were, but for those of us who play ERP regularly, were too delicious to miss.

Thanks to all of you who have supported me and my family over the last few weeks. It has been hard to bounce back from losing my brother, but many of you have made it much easier. The ADGO is a great community of supportive and caring disc golfers.

Thanks so much and God bless...
