Stingray kills woman on boat in Florida Keys
75-pound fish jumps, strikes her in face as boat travels at 25 mph; ray dies
MARATHON, Fla. - A 75-pound stingray killed a Michigan woman Thursday when it flew out of the water and struck her face as she rode a boat in the Florida Keys, officials said.

Judy Kay Zagorski, of Pigeon, Mich., was sitting in the front seat of a boat going 25 mph when the spotted eagle ray, with a wingspan of 5 to 6 feet, leaped out of the water, said Jorge Pino, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The 57-year-old woman's father was driving the boat on the Atlantic Ocean side of Vaca Key, Pino said

"He had absolutely no warning. It just happened instantaneously," Pino said.

The collision knocked Zagorski backward onto the floor of the boat, Pino said.

The impact likely killed the woman, and she did not appear to have puncture wounds from the ray's barb, Pino said. An autopsy is planned, Pino said.

Zagorski's sister was standing next to her when the stingray appeared but was not injured, Pino said.

The stingray died from the impact, officials said

The silly woman failed to catch it, and instead it bounced off of her, knocking her down and cracking her skull, which is what the Medical Examiner said is what killed her, not the Steve Irwin barb.

Was the Sting Ray killed too?

Postby Laserman » Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:48 am

Was the Sting Ray killed too? And if so, do they make good eating? How do you prepare sting ray.

I also heard the woman was from Alabama and was heard to say "Watch this daddy" just before the sting ray hit her!

I used to work with a guy from Fiji who brought in a newspaper article from Fiji that told of a fisherman who died f'ing the slit on a stingray they caught on a fishing boat and got struck by the barbed tail underneath his nut sack... Explain that one to the wife when you get into shore...

After doing some research I do not think we will have a problem with Stingrays jumping up and hitting us in the head and killing us while we are boating.

But I have fouund out that there are perch that have caused some serious welts and contusions.

The guy in Fiji Fisherman should have stuck with Chickens.

Chicken or Tuna

Postby Laserman » Mon Mar 24, 2008 1:02 pm

Does stingray taste more like chicken or fish. Is white whine appropriate with stingray or does it depend on how it is prepared?

Filet O Fish= Eyes, Fins, Gills, spare stingray parts and any workers fingers that get to close to the grinder, Breaded with sawdust, Elmers glue and a pinch of parsley for that bland flavor.

Vern, I'd tell you to put a lot of Tartar sauce on it but then I'd have to give you the recipe for it, and you don't want that!
