Course status/library construction

Postby 12StonesScott » Fri Oct 04, 2013 9:19 pm

The contractors working on the site work for the new library began work this week, including beginning tree removal in the area of Hole 4. Because trees were being cut down and heavy equipment is beginning to be used in that area, the RRPD proactively removed the basket for Hole 4 for safekeeping. It has been known for some time that when work began, Hole 4's basket would have to be moved. The work started with little or no notice to the RRPD or the RDGC, however.

The plan that has been discussed among the RDGC board members and informally with others is to relocate the basket in the vicinity of the shed that is still standing near where the trailers used to be. This area should be unaffected in the long term by the library. However, there is still a substantial amount of debris in this area from the removal of the trailers, and consequently it's considered unsafe to move the basket to a permanent location in this area at the moment. Once the area is cleared of debris and we can establish that there's no ongoing danger from construction equipment, we will identify a new location for the basket and have it permanently placed there.

In the short term, Hole 4 should be considered closed. There's no basket there, so there's no reason to try to play it. For the upcoming Lost in the Woods tournament, a temporary basket will be positioned in a safe area, probably with a temporary tee location as well. For casual play, after completing Hole 3 proceed to the tee area for Hole 5. Signs providing information and directions will be posted as soon as possible.

The silt fencing on Hole 5 and behind the basket on Hole 2 will remain in place for the time being but will be removed at some point. For now, play around it.

Along the right side of Hole 6, you will see black silt fencing and orange netting. This area is subject to construction activity, including felling of trees, and you should exercise caution whenever work is ongoing. Eventually, a 10' chain link fence will separate the library property from park property in this area; based on the site plan it should be to the east of the fairway for Hole 6 and should not pose any long-term problem.

If you have questions or concerns, feel free to send them to info@roswelldiscgolf.org.

We have a temporary pin position for hole 4 for LITW marked in the new clearing in the woods to the right across from where the trailers were. The position is marked with a stake with orange fluorescent tape -- to help with visibility from the tee area there's also orange tape higher up on a tree trunk right behind the pin position. Temporary long tee position is marked with paint on the corners back on the walking path, throwing through a new clearing in the brush behind the existing concrete pad. For LITW, Open/Adv/Int will play from that longer position (about 327 ft from pin position), while other divisions will play from concrete pad (approx. 260 ft). Will try to have a temp basket in place for doubles Monday night so we can try it out. Stay tuned . . .

Basket has been installed on Hole 4 in the position used for Lost in the Woods (in the woods on the right side of the fairway, opposite from where the trailers were). Thanks to Mark Holder and the parks staff for taking care of that! We'll get the "hole closed" signs replaced, etc. as soon as possible.

Local teen Paden Herring has been working on a new kiosk as an Eagle Scout project, and is almost ready to install it in the area near the picnic tables. Two bulletin board spaces, a found disc deposit box, and a large, very visible rustic sign at the top. They'll be out Thursday to dig holes, pour concrete, and do prep, and then again Saturday for the final installation. If you see Paden, his dad, and his volunteer helpers out there, be sure to say thanks!

Finally, STAY OUT OF THE LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION AREA. Climbing the fence to retrieve a disc, and especially using a heavy tree limb to force down the fence to do it, is stupid, dangerous, and illegal. We've been warned by the parks staff that any repeat of this sort of behavior could result in the entire front nine being closed, baskets pulled from 6 and/or 4, etc. So don't do it.
