FCDGC - Forsyth County Disc Golf Club

Postby Funky Bobby J » Thu Nov 20, 2008 10:15 am

Dave Kenney and I had our first meeting with Matt Pate and Chris LeBlanc yesterday (I'll post meeting minutes here soon). The meeting could not have gone much better. They want to spend some money on the course next year for tee signs and information kiosk, but the FCDGC needs to supply most of the labor to install these things. They would like us to participate in an occassional youth program and demonstration days, They are cool with any trimming on course improvements barring that they do not impact bike trails or walking paths.

The big thing is that we have our first work day scheduled for 11/29 from 9 am to 1 pm. We need people there (looking for 10 or so). The goal is to really focus on holes 3 and 4 to make them cleaner and more playable. We have a detailed hit list. With a good crew, we could knock out some serious stuff. Please take some time to come and help - bring tools - clippers chain saw, weed wackers etc.

Hope to see some folks out there!!! Please call, e-mail, or pm me if you have any questions 678-294-1794 or bob.johnson@vericor.com.

Practice basket at 9 - if we have enough people - we may pursue some things on other holes... We have a legit playable gold layout in mind that we might start working on....

Dale - a lot of the gold layout has some of the holes that Keith et alcame up with. We will keep some of the gold tees that Jason developed that follow the flow of the course without walking backwards so much. It is all up for debate. Some of the holes on Keith's layout will obviously not work well for daily play; so we have to think of how we can work Gold tees in that do not encroach on the walking path, bike trails, and other disc golfers (like having to walk all the way past the tee you just played to play the next gold hole). We'll see - all open for discussion and input.

Here is a draft of the redefined GOLD course(Probably about a par 63-66, depending on the pin placements for 5, 6 & 15)
1. Hole 1 Blue to Basket 2 becomes Gold Hole #1. (Par 4)

2. Hole 3 Gold will be about 50 ft behind the Blue pad. (Par 4)

3. Hole 4 Gold pad remains, as is. (Par 4)

4. Hole 5 Gold pad remains, as is. (Par 3,4)

5. Hole 6 Gold pad remains, as is. (Par 3, 4)

6. Hole 8 Gold remains as is. Skip #7 Gold & go to Gold 8. (Par 3)

7. Hole 9 Blue to Basket 10 becomes Gold Hole #7. (Par 4)

8. Hole 11 Gold pad remains, as is. (Par 3)

9. Hole 12 Gold pad remains, as is. (Par 3)

10. Hole A Red to Basket B becomes Gold Hole #10. (Par 4)

11. Hole C Gold: about 50 ft behind the Blue tee. Same gap. (Par 4)

12: Hole D Gold remains, as is. Top of hill, behind V’Ball Court. (Par 4)

13: Hole I Gold: Needs to be clearly defined: Behind the Blue pad. (Par 4)

14: Hole 13 Gold remains, as is. (Par 4)

15: Hole 14 Gold remains, as is. (Par 3)

16: Hole 15 Gold remains, as is. (Par 3,4)

17: Hole 17 Gold will be moved up and to the right of the Green power box to interfere less with the walking path. (Par 3)

18: Hole 18 Gold will be moved to the Concrete sidewalk above and behind the Blue pad. Second light pole will be a mando left. (Par 3)

Thanks to everyone that made it out to help on Friday and Saturday... We got a lot accomplished...
Hole 2: The OB line looks fantastic.
Hole 3: The Gold tee was moved up and the work on the fairway is done. You're going to LOVE it.
Hole 4: The fairway work from the Gold and Blue tees is done. Very cool, but still very tight...
Hole 5: The Gold tee throwing lane is clear. Bring out the big arms. It's a long way to the corner.
Hole 6: The Gold tee throwing lane is clear. All I can say is, WOW. This pad can also be used as a White tee for Hole 5.
Hole 7: The Blue tee pad was extended for better run up. The White tee was moved to the left side of the hill.
Hole 8: The Gold tee throwing lane is clear. The White tee was moved to the right about 50 feet.
Hole C: The Gold tee has been marked about 50 feet behind the Blue pad. A very scarey drive through that gap.
Hole F: A new Gold pad installed. Behind and to the right of the Blue pad. It's a fun shot, birdie is possible.
Hole H: The Blue pad has been moved back and to the left to allow for a better run up.
The Bridge from Hole G to Hole H has been repaired.

We are well on our way to a much improved course for 2009.. THANK YOU...

Hi Nathan, I was trying to figure out who Downtownxxking was. I think a simple overhead view of the hole will work... One drawing that shows all four tee pads and both the short and long pins... OB(Tree lines, Walking Paths, creeks, etc.) should be marked on the drawing. If you can depict elevation changes, that would be helpful, too. Look at this website...

http://www.discgolfassoc.com/discgolf-e ... tee-signs/

Very simple examples.. If you can come up with something a little more detailed, that would be great...

Draw one up a any one of the holes and we'll talk about it...

Any other input is much appreciated..

Some of the course I played in California use a little disc wheel attached to the signpost. It has a, b, c, or d. Whatever letter is up indicates pin position. Go with something low cost and easy to replace as the park barneys are likely to destroy at some point.

Hello everyone, first post here. I just have to say that I just started playing this week, have 8 discs, and love the course and game. I live on 400 exit 13 and come here to play.

Anyway, on-line with the topic. I think the signs should be simple as stated by another post. I played in Tennessee on Thanksgivng Day at an awful course, however, the signs were drawn out like a golf course hole and were easy to read. I think just a simple diagram of the hole layout (fairway colored), tee box indicators, distance to spots on hole, standard hazard spots and OB markings, and the feet and PAR OF HOLE would be phenominal. Whoever did the current signs, they are nice, but somewhat difficult to read for a noobie and over-detailed, I can read them but get confused sometimes.

Other corse suggestions:

Concrete Tee Pads
New flags and possibly color on the baskets
Work on the other wooded nine ( where is the last hole by the way?)
Extending 18 and moving the basket back
Moving 16 basket to the right and away from fenced area (I have had to retrieve 5 of my playing partners discs already from the fenced in area, one in which my nice watch broke)
17 red tee placement sucks for beginners who cannot use mulitple throws

Don't jump all over me, I know it takes time and is a work in progress. I am willing to help!
By the way, the propsed new course will be in the NW part of the county. Still no clue where or when, I guess by 2011.

I think this course rocks by the way and am proud of it!

Welcome, we look forward to meeting you at Sunday doubles... See below on your suggestions:

Other corse suggestions:
Concrete Tee Pads
- We have talked about several options.. Funding is the biggest inhibitor, right now...

New flags and possibly color on the baskets
- New flags will be done in January. No discussions about color on the baskets, yet..
- New Tee signs are coming in January, too...

Work on the other wooded nine ( where is the last hole by the way?)
- A & B need work and they are on the list. C,D & E may be impacted by the 2009 construction of a new building, so we need to wait and see where the extended parking lot is going to be. F, G, H & I are in pretty good shape. They have already been worked... btw, F throws out towards the parking lot... G throws right back into the woods.. Cross the Bridge and go towards the left.. That is H.. Look behind and to the left of H's basket. That is the fairway for I...

Extending 18 and moving the basket back
- Not sure what you mean by extending 18. The Blue and Gold tees provide all the distance you could want.

Moving 16 basket to the right and away from fenced area (I have had to retrieve 5 of my playing partners discs already from the fenced in area, one in which my nice watch broke)
- Sorry about the watch. There is almost always a cross wind on hole 16.. I would suggest that you throw lower on that hole to avoid the "walk of Shame". That is what we call it when someone has to climb the fence. We've all been there. Also, local rule.. Last one in, climbs the fence... You will learn to love that hole...

17 red tee placement sucks for beginners who cannot use mulitple throws
- There are no plans to move the red pad, but we are going to move the white pad to across the path and down the hill. It will make it a better hole for beginners.

I hope this helps... Take care...

here there guys, its nathan again :P

well, as you know, i'm working on the signs for the course, trying to come up with stuff, and i got two things.

houckdesign.com - check that guy out. his signs are great. and i think central park deserves signs of this calibur. we have a national tour course, so lets make it look like one huh. you agree with me? his ideas coincide with mine.

secondly, i think the park needs an image, a logo if you will. i've come up with one, but its juvenile, good, but not perfect for central. something classy, professional, and rememberable.

do you guys have any cool ideas for that? what would you like to see? when you think of central park disc golf, what comes to mind?

im excited about all that dave and the guys are doing, and i'm helping in the ways i can, and i want ya'lls input and involvement too. its our course, so lets make it the best we can.

we are well on our way there.

big thanks to dave kenney and the guys working with the park and rec (and foco park and rec too), and all of you who showed up for the work day too. the course looks amazing.

central park has so much potential, so lets keep the train rolling.

Those signs look good and the logo idea is smart.

I did not say my disc has gone into the fence, yet, I aim at the second small tree on the right with my Archangel and am in good shape.

I guess I will have to learn something about 17. I have thrown an anheuser twice now with a fairway driver and held the edge on the hill, I guess that works.

I agree with Nathan,it is our course and for us to have it really nice we need to do it ourselves, then the county park and rec will be more inclined to help us out with things. They do a lot as is, but if we show we can fix it up, they will help more. The majority of the reviews on the course are good, doing the little things with signage, new flags, and so forth will help.

I was out saturday mid-day and saw a good crowd on the back 9 course, I even talked to some first timers!

Thank you Dave Kenney for all the help and info you have provided me. I am sure I will meet you sometime as well as other guys.

HAPPY DISC CHUNKING!

dude, its hole 6, the signature hole of central park. last time i checked, white oak didnt have three trees, a creek, a huge rock, a disc flying at it, and real dga basket vector in it. so it if its like white oak in that it has a tree and a basket, sure; but other than that. this is better. mine is hand drawn and not-from-stock vector too. some serious time and effort went in here. i don't appreciate you saying its a rip off, you try coming up with something better. eh?

let's compare.

white oak:
Image

central park:
http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq21 ... _FINAL.jpg

so, they both share a tree and a basket. other than that. end similarities.

Nate - Jeff is just messing with you. It's a slow day at the restaraunt, he's had 3 too many beers. You are correct, they do not look anything alike. It is a good-looking logo that captures one of the best holes in Atl.

Since I have not transitioned from the red to the blue tees yet, the new kiosk location is awesome! I almost aced number one on Sunday. What other things are going to be changed before the open, and when is the next work day because I want to help. Also when do we find out about the proposed new park supposively going to have a disc golf course?

It's supposedly...

How about a small tree off-centered to the left. That sounds better. Besides it is January, no need to plant a tree yet!

Actually the winter is the best time to plant trees because they are sleeping and when they wake up in the spring they can be in their new home.

The new kiosk is up and now has a roof on it. Thanks to John Outler, Dave Kenney, Terry Lynch, and Bob Johnson. Special thanks to Chuck Carter and AW Roofing Inc. for the nice green tinted architectural shingles -- looking good. Now I guess it is up to Parks and Rec to complete.....?

Dale--- by any chance did you used to punt for Clemson? :?:
Once upon a time, there was a pretty darn good kicker that played for Clemson that has your name....just wondering.

I am not that Dale Hatcher, but it did earn me some nice tables at better dinning establishments in LA when he played for the LA Rams....

Dale Hatcher was also a pretty good hockey goon for the Whalers, Stars and a few other teams.

You should have lied to me. I was going to offer to buy you beer and a nice meal the next (or first) time we meet.
Hmmm a punter, a hockey goon, and Forsyth's own Dale in a round of disc golf--- my money would be on the disc golfer. Now if the gloves come off, all bets are off.

the front 18 tee signs are done!

i will be giving them to Dave K. tomorrow, and then they'll be off to the printing press! so some sweet new signs too.

We are also getting some sick new flags for the baskets. they are weighted to tell you how fast the wind is blowing. gonna be sweeeeeeet.

also, working on a sign for the new kiosk (great job to all you who worked on it, it looks amazing) to put on the side facing the road. that will probably just be a large image of the new logo for CP.

I am workin on the woods A-I now. don't know when they'll get done, cos I'm back in school now. but hopefully within a week or two.

The park is getting better and better.

Thanks for all the hard work guys.

Nathan,

I would be interested in getting some info on the new tee signs.

I am looking at tee signs for the new course at White Oak Park and have been shopping around for some good deals.

Can you give me the low down on y'alls???

Thanks,

Hi Mike, Nathan has done all the work on the Tee Signs for Central.. He's designed them from pen sketches of each hole...
They are AWESOME.... The files are HUGE, so I cannot send them via email... I will let Nathan comment on the SW tools he's using, but that is the bottom line.. He's done the work over the last 30+ days... Many thanks Nathan,,, The people that play Central are going to love them.

People have already made the trek from all over. It's worth the trip. Some of the
holes there are like no other you've probably experienced.

i really want to get down there sometime.

thanks dave, i appreciate all your help with the signs.

on the new kiosk, i suppose behind the plexiglass there is going to be cork board to post on, right?

then with all the boxes for maps, scorecards, etc?

can you talk to matt about the other side, facing the street. i think the new logo would be great there. we just need to measure that space and consider what to print it on. i think something plastic or metal i guess.

and one more thing, you want me to make a new course map? i can do that.

Nathan, thanks... Yes, a new coursemap would be cool.. There is an ariel view on the County website, but something with more detail would be awesome... Yes, corkboard will be behind the plexiglass. Also, I think we're pretty much open to do what we want with the other side of the Kiosk... Logo would be cool... cya

Thanks to Dave, Cdawg, and Terry, for coming out yesterday!

Terry with the killer weedeater, and I with the trusty lawn mower COMPLETELY finished holes 3 and 4 as well as the trails to 4 tees and 5 blue tee from basket 4 yesterday. You will be amazed by the difference in how they look! I also cleared the area on the slope hole and the walkway to the gym hole tee pad.

Dave and the Dawg were putting the dirt in around all of the post for the 18 red pad tee signs, as well as some OB line stringing. I can't wait to see Nathan's signs on the posts!

The course is shaping up nicely, and the NEW wind flags look sweet.

Only things left now are to getpads in the locations of all 18 holes for the AO, and this puppy will be ready to go fro March 29th.

Thanks again to everyone who has helped keep Central looking good!

There was a big turnout Wednesday and it seems like DG at CP is picking up. Maybe it is time to push the FCDGC now. Anyone else have any thoughts?? Set up some regular events, fundraisers???

Just a heads up their will be a major little league baseball tournament at Central this weekend (March 5 & 6). There are 200+ teams split between Central and Sharon Springs starting at 8 AM on Saturday. Your best bet may be to park back by the Gym and start on 14 G

Hey Guys,

I would like to become involved with the FCDGC. I helped design Alexander Park and have been slangin' for about 10 years. I grew up in Forsyth Co. and have recently moved from Atl up to exit 16. I am a registered Landscape Architect in Georgia and would love to lend any knowledge and labor to help make Central a better course, as well as help get more courses in Forsyth Co. I definitely think there is a need for a couple more courses in the county that are 100% funded by the county (tees, signs, clearing, etc.) Let me know of any future meetings and I would like to meet you guys.

Thanks,

Ryan Harris

Ryan - they are breaking ground at a new park at the corner of 369 and Wallace Tatum (about 7 miles from 400). They were supposed to put DG course here (it is in the Master Plan) beautiful 100 acre piece of property with a pond. Maybe you and BC can talk to the P&R.
