I do not know that it is inherently "unfair", but for Earlwood, Crucible, and Lake Russell - maybe a lottery system would be more FAIR. If you are willing to send in your money within a 5-day window, your name will be put into a hat for tourney spots. Kind of like the P'tree road race does it. That would be more FAIR. Money could be refunded to those that do not get in or be used to set priority for the waiting list. It is just a thought. I could not park by my computer Friday night and thought I had time to do it later on Saturday, but was denied...

I am not saying it's unfair - but like Earlwood - a tournament selling out in minutes, there is a lot of luck as to whether you get in or not too. I had no idea that Crucible would sell out in a few hours - I should have camped out to assure my spot. Actually, I had a busy Saturday with kids stuff and totally forgot about checking when I woke up - not only is it hard to stay awake Hugh, but us old folks are easily addled.

I still say what I proposed above is more fair, but it would be more work for the TD and I am not sure I'd want to mess with it. I think that I'd just rather see my event sell out in a few minutes/hours.

Well - for those 12 who have called or left messages for the "Non-waitlist" waitlist, and also forthe others posting here - you can always put that entry fee money you would have used for the CRUCIBLE towards the Series Finale A-Tier in September which has been on sale since NOV 1st and still has 150 spots available - so there is plenty of time to sign up in the next month or 2 before it sells out.

With 180 available spots in the Event, NO ONE has any excuses to get shut out of that one.

By your own admission - you haven't seen Central in 2 years or played the Supersized layout - try it first at the AO and then you can at least base it off something real versus imagined - and if you still don't like the course enough to play the other local A-Tier in September I'll understand.

I've played the super=size layout on more than one occasion. The last time was at the USDGC qualifier. I'm pretty sure that was 2 years ago, maybe not. Anyway, I just don't see what all of the hype is about. Central has a couple decent holes, but as a whole the course is boring. With the addition to the police dept. and now the rec. center, Central has lost some of it's better holes.

It's not as much hype as it is that it is not crap if set up right with pin and tee pad positions.

all White, Blue, Red pads, or all long or all short pins - yeah it isn't great, but it is still better to have the variety available with the land they got to use than to have nothing or all static spots- that's all I'm saying.

I know it's not everyone's favorite, but it is my "home course" so I don't see it as negatively, because I have the options of a variety of holes to play any time I'm there - which is how I came up with 10 different Supersized layouts (changing them everytime some Softball or construction project gets in the way) - which you can't do at alot or most of the other ATL area courses.

i had johnny's pizza deliver all the food for the last crucible event and it seemed to go great. they have offered to do it again unless there are any other suggestions

I have had Sorrells BBQ do lunch for the first 2 GSSS Events at THE CRUCIBLE but being in FEB and have had no issues with them - if something changes and they CAN'T do it in MARCH - I will gladly take you up on it Ryan.

Below is from an E-Mail sent from the park manager at Sandy Creek which oversees the CRUCIBLE course property to myself and members of the ATHENS club in regards to use of the property even though they have put in COUNTLESS HOURS of volunteer work in at Sandy Creek park as well as the CRUCIBLE property.

For those of you who think I'm too hard on people or that I'm a pain in the ass for wanting there to be no STUPIDITY involved in events I run because it is easy to have ONE PERSON screw it up for everyone - please read what the Park manger wrote (in red below), and then when done reading that, please also read what Kelly Leggette wrote in the FLY BOY thread about maybe losing the "Worlds longest disc golf hole", or what John Ritger has written about all the efforts he has put forth to obtain a course at Perkerson Park and then ask yourselves Am I the reason that these courses may never have Events again, or am I the reason they may never be installed or am I the reason changes have to be made to a SWEET disc golf course?

You are fortunate to currently have the opportunity to do any activities at the crucible. After last year's "keg" sitting out in front of the red shed in a garbage can (Flying Eye) as well as garbage cans full of alcohol containers after last year's Super Six, the crucible is on a short leash to begin with (very short). You may be under the impression that county policy or county rules may be bypassed because you help with setup and maintenance. I assure you that you are mistaken. I could have easily shut the crucible down permanently, but you should thank Doug and Keith who assured me steps would be taken to prevent these types of incidents in the future.

In response to liability issues: If there is not an event agreement attached to any proposed activity at Cook's property, there is no event. FYI - Cook's property is not part of Sandy Creek Park, so an event agreement is absolutely mandatory for any activity taking place out there.

As far as "profit" being handed over to the park; Do you really want to get into the actual cost of preparing the crucible for Tournaments (especially the Flying Eye)? Being that the crucible is prepared exclusively for your use, the amount of labor, gas, etc..., that it takes our department to prepare the crucible for this one weekend is significantly more than the few hundred dollars the park receives. If you still feel entitlement to this property, I will be happy to include all costs associated with preparing the crucible in any future agreements with your organization.

You may disagree with county policies as set forth, but the alternative is that Cook's property will be unavailable to anyone.

Policies and agreements are in place for both parties to understand responsibilities and expectations. While I understand and will listen to any concerns or suggestions any of you may have, please understand I am limited by county policy and procedures. I hope, however, we can continue the successful relationship between disc golf organizations and ACC Leisure Services Department.

I may seeing that with the time change there "should" be enough daylight to allow it, BUT I will decide based on what is best for the WHOLE experience and not do it just to make 4 others who didn't sign up in time happy. I am really just happy that Steve(park Manager) has allowed the Event to go on as for the last few weeks that was not even a certainty.
Now I'm hoping that Doug and the rest of the Athens club will still be willing to help me and the Event out if the course can not be played Friday or Sunday.
If so they may be part of the 4some that gets added if one does - time will tell.

As one on the outside looking in, I gotta say - 5somes at the Crucible in a one day tournament with everyone driving home - is a really long day (if everyone was spending the night & camping - long day, no problem). I think that you gotta add 45 minutes at least per round to an already long round. I really want to play and would jump at the opportunity to play it in 5somes, but that is a really really long day.

I think that a ghost card on 6 (the second par 5 into the woods) would likely not slow things down too much with the longish walk from 5.

Still keeping my fingers crossed... I might step on Plotky's foot this weekend...

Take GA 316 to the Athens Bypass (GA 10 Loop)
Don't take the UGA exit - keep straight toward the Home Depot, but take a right after the bridge and before the shopping center onto the North Bypass (jug handle entrance ramp).
Take the North Bypass to the Danielsville Rd exit (just past US-441).
Take a left on to Danielsville Rd., and follow it North for a mile or so and look for Nowhere Rd. on your left (around a small fenced-in detention pond).
Turn left on Nowhere Rd. and go for about 2.5 miles. Look for a gate on your left after you pass the cemetery - that's the entrance/parking area.

I don't see how a ghost card can be added without any residual affect on the tournament. Normally, there are backups
when the field is full with foursomes. How can you say adding an intermittent group will not add to the normal backups?

As for my tournament and my efforts as a first time TD, I may fail, but a friend needed someone to step up and keep a tournament running for the 9th straight year, so I did it. You don't have to support me or the tournament, I'm sure that I will have no problem getting entries. If it's 12 or 90, we will have fun and make the best of it. Usually there are 2-5 people who don't get in and want to be "informed" if a spot opens up and with the usual 6-10 people who sign up and then can't make it I'm usually posting on the board first come first served after going thru the "mental waitlist", but with the CRUCIBLE and Lake Russell the people NOT signing up in time and the people rotating out go up DRASTICALLY - which is why I'll sometimes rattle off numbers of how far down the list someone is if they ask - so essentially NOTHING has changed in the 3 years I've been running the GSSS.

THE CRUCIBLE WILL BE OPEN FOR PLAY FRIDAY MARCH 19 FROM 1-8 pm (if the gate is not open, please do not enter or block).

There is a $2 park entrance fee to play. There will be an envelope under the big cedar to left of drive, as is tradition, for money to be collected.

The Crucible is on a short leash; basically, we got two strikes, on more and enough said. It will be gone.

By putting a couple bucks in for the park (generating revenue always looks good) and having NO ALCOHOL, we can hopefully work are way back into the good graces of park management.

Being a first time Crucible player I still need to ask maybe the most important question of all.

In the past Keith had a BBQ joint serve food on site. They usually have BBQ plates, Burgers, Dogs, snacks, and drinks. The food has always been great and well worth the price. Driving from the course to get lunch is a hassle and could cause you to be late returning for the second round.

I'm looking forward to joining all of you again. I played one of the series tournaments back in 2008. Being the only meskin there and wearing a cowboy hat, I was mistaken for part of the grounds crew and had to mow part of the back 9 before they would let me play. I would have been offended but the pay was pretty reasonable and I got a couple of authentic taquitos for my troubles. I actually went back to Home Depot the following week hoping for another job.

Normally I have had Sorrell's BBQ, but now with the new things and contract stipulations the park has asked for, there will sadly be NO FOOD available on site this year.
I'm still trying to find out what is close to there, but if nothing else, plan on bringing lunch with you just to be on the safe side.

Thanks to everyone who showed up to play (only 2 REC players did not show and were replaced by Joel Shimkus and Greg Flowers) as well as all the sponsors who helped create the NICE payouts!

I showed the park guy that there were NO alcohol items in the 3 trash cans, and we also FILLED the recycling bin with plastic bottles and cans which helps the environment - as well as EVERY piece of trash was picked up from the gate onward, so the place is SPOTLESS going into Doug's Event in a few hours.
