3rd annual ITP Ice Bowl will be @ Perkerson Park on Feb 7th, 2010
PDGA C-Tier

4 divisions: Open, Advanced, Intermediate & Recreational (no age protection, sorry old guys)
2 rounds:
*Rec Div plays short tees both rounds
*Open, Adv & Int divisions play 1st round long tees, 2nd round short tees

Side Action (pay @ registration):
$5 in cash CTPS (some divisional, some all division) + $5 ace fund
there will also be some free CTPs that are included with entry .... and the ladder for the long putt on #12

Raffle:
tix are $1 each, get as many as you want, will draw them after Rd 2. At least 20 separate raffle items, so definitely plan on getting some raffle tickets.

Items include (2) $25 gift cards to Taco Mac, (2) $25 gift cards to Neighbors Pub, (2) $25 gift cards to Dark Horse Tavern, (2) $50 gift cards to the Punchline, (1) $50 gift card to Doc Chey's or Osteria 832, (1) $50 gift card to The Vortex, (1) Innova Traveller basket, various discs, Innova shirts & hats, Perk plastic and more

If you haven't played this before, be warned that we use an atypical payout. Payout comes in a fat players pack, big CTPs on most holes, sweet trophies and a killer lunch. All of the entry fee that's left over after the players pack items funds our donation. Most of the CTPs come from local businesses kicking in merchandise or gift certificates -- if you know anybody that owns/runs a local business that is interested in kicking in a prize as a donation, talk to them -- it will make the event better.

Last year we ranked 33rd out of 190 Ice Bowl events in $$ raised with a $1,727 donation. I think an Int. player is looking to get better.
They have decided that they are not a Rec. player anymore but still not consitent enough to hang w/ the Pros or Avd.(faux pros)
So, wouldn't it make sense to play 1 long then 1 short.
If of course the pad selection allows for a round rating?
With at least w/ 1 round played from the tips they could compare the round to what they strive to be----A BETTER Disc Golfer
Then they leave on a shorter set-up. Giving them a some sense of comprehension of the game...

....Are us FAUX PRO's and Open DGr's only playin' the 1 set of Tee's?

all divs will play 2nd rd short. so everyone will have a round rating the 2nd round.

in the past, open & adv played longs 1st rd then shorts 2nd rd; rec & int played shorts both rds

i'm OK with ints playing longs 1st rd, if they want to. my only concern is slower speed of play jamming up the course.

Due the the length of Perk from either tee, this Int, would prefer two rounds short. This is where I would typically add some analytical reason but the truth is I just do not have the distance.

I think that the Int players will have fun playing from the long tees.

I do want to offer a second definition of an intermediate player to go along with JZP,s example.

"An Int. player is looking to get better. They have decided that they are not a Rec. player anymore but still not "able to throw the distance" enough to hang w/ the Pros or Avd."

The difference is some Int. have more consistency than distance. A good example would be me at ERP vs. me at Central. Some players can hang with better players in the woods but are exposed in an open fairway. I think this would be more true for Int. payers that learned to play in wooded short courses like Claystone or the Sinks. Likewise, Distance would more likely be a strength to a player who calls JPM or Central their home.

That being said, It should always be nice to see where one would rank when compared to the Pro players. As always, it will be a great event!

.One would think a charity unsanctioned event would be a perfect oppurtunity to play with Pros like Mccoy or Dollar just to see how they play their game and implement that into their own.Your destined to get beat badly,but it dont matter cause its un sanctioned and for charity(Were just doing it for the Cause-NoFx). :twisted:

Oh by the way Ritger I sent you an E-mail for the charity they might even do 3,000 themselves or at least half PUBLIX is big on their charity work.

Beat by the top pro's??? -or - my ultimate plan to "Shock the World" and take home the Pro Open Trophy and then retire to never throw a disc again and tell that story of how I won over an over!!!

Unless you are playing 2 rounds from the short pads your times are going to be off.

It sucks that this is on Super Bowl Sunday.
I really want to play, but also don't want to miss the Superbowl.

I can record all the pregame stuff, but hate missing any of the actual game as I haven't since 1970.

Any chance since it's a fundraiser anyways that you can play both rounds from the shorts for time consideration with a full field?

that's a valid point -- i didn't realize superbowl was on that day until I saw Hirsch @ ERP 2 weeks ago...

i think my times are right except that 4:30 is more like end of round 2, not end of payouts. I would definitely expect to be 100% done by 5:30. Game starts @ 6:30ish. But ... I think we could speed it up and shoot for finishing payouts by 4:30 (2 hours to get home).

Maybe sort of a compromise -- instead of 1st round playing all longs, it plays longer, making some of the time consuming holes play off shorts (like #14). I don't want 2 rounds of all shorts, but am game for mix n match if it speeds everything up. I bet we could keep both rounds at 2.5 hours doing that. My initial thought is par 59 layout 1st round (with par 4's on #2, #5, #9 & par 5 #13 .... so #3, 10, 11 & 14 short pads). 2nd round would be almost all short par 55.

9:30 (more like 9:45) start, finish ~12:15 ... 2nd round @ 1:15 (or earlier as nobody has to leave the park) ... finish by 3:45 and paid out by 4:30.

Can't make it. I'm having people over for a Super Bowl party. Maybe next time around. The rate I'm going Perkerson will be a permanent course before I play it again.

Same here. Unlike Keith who hasn't missed a super bowl since 1970, I have never watched one :oops:

I've just never cared for football that much myself. I can't think of a better place to be on Super bowl, uh, I mean Ice Bowl Sunday than Perkerson.

i'm in the could care less boat too (as evidenced by my scheduling) ... but i think the par 59 layout 1st round will be the best option. only a few holes will be shorter than otherwise but it'll save 20+ minutes and will still play very tough. those holes have great short-er tees anyways.

anybody that is concerned about time should consider helping out with tourney central ... the more volunteers, the faster everything will move

I love playing rounds with the new guys. I usually play with the same ole folks most weekends so a change is always cool, but I'm sorry to say I won't be making it to this one. Courtney is having the baby anytime between now and the week of the ice bowl. So I'm gonna miss the Ice Bowl this year which sucks but I'm anxious to see the little guy. Ritger always does an excellent job with his events at Perk.

i think to facilitate wrapping up the tournament, if everyone who brings baskets has some identifying mark on it (e.g. sticker, sharpie, w/e) then, whatever hole your group ends on, grab the basket, and grab some on the way back to tournament central.

I think that is a good idea with the par 59 course 1st round, and as I ALWAYS do for you and others, I'll help with morning entries, scoring and payout help.

Thanks for the consideration, as I'm a HUGE Super Bowl fan (I've even been to 4 of them) - I will agree that yes most of them stink, but the last few years have had some pretty good ones!

for cash side action i was thinking 25 for open players 15 for advanced 10 for intermediate and 5 for rec players.
if a player wanted to play up a division for the side action that would be ok but no playing down a divisions. we could do one cash ctp for anyone who wants to get in on it, i dont know what hole something short and a hole that uses the same tee both rounds ( if there is one). right now with 15 open players the payout wouldnt be to bad considering everyone buys in. If anyone else has any ideas which im sure some of you will shoot them at me.

top post updated with info on side action (CTPs & $$ by division). going to do the distribution of merch a bit differently this year .... i've got a bunch of restaurant gift certificates, bar tabs, a basket & other schwag ... instead of divvying up as CTPs it will all be raffled. Raffle tix will be $1, buy as many as you want.

So, bring some extra $$ to get in on side action & raffle items.

and .... just got word that we got the donated ladder! -- long putt on #12 wins it!

I've always thought fivesomes aren't that much slower than foursomes too. Perhaps you should just set the limit at 90 since you are already changing numbers around. Some of us with limited funding had to make sacrifices to enter tournaments early to make sure we get in based on 72 players. I guess it depends on who you are and who you know.

John has already stated he doesn't care about those of us interested in watching the Super Bowl.

I've stated that I don't personally care about the Super Bowl, but i've already compromised with you by shortening the layout in Rd 1 to par 59. Adding a ghost card on #14 will have little to no impact on the round length with #13 playing long. We did the same thing last year; it will have even less impact this year because of the layout. The only impacted group will be the 2nd ones starting on #14, and they'll have the advantage of 4 wind dummies. If you'd like a refund because you're concerned about a potential loss of 5 minutes, please let me know ASAP so I can return your $$.

You already know I'll be there no matter what, and I'm just displaying my thoughts. I've been one of your biggest supporters since day 1 and wish that "theP" was only 10 minutes from my home as it is from yours.

I appreciate your thoughts on the course layout, but I hold not even "wildest hopes" thoughts that everything will be wrapped up by 4:30 unless it is 12 degress and raining as then only 30 people will be there like the DEC Event (the only one you've had that I missed while I was at Universal Studios on my free trip in Orlando).

As many of the BAD horrendous rounds as I've had there you think I would learn my lesson, but as your excel spreadsheets stats prove - I play every round just as crappy as the last one no matter how many times or how many different configurations you make there and I don't even get the out of Pro Masters to help cover for my lowly skills.
I think this time I'll just use mids and putters and see if I can stay in bounds doing that - it can't be any worse than any of my other rounds and it will make carrying my bag that much easier. :mrgreen:

Plus adding another couple of 800 rated rounds to my ratings to go with my rounds from Savannah and I can have have the biggest ratings drop of my career since I tore the tendon in my elbow and I refused to stop playing. :roll:

Looks like you either missed or ignored my point which had nothing to do with finish time. If you recall I've already stated that I couldn't care less about the super bowl. I'm sorry that I keep forgetting that I'm infected with disc golf leprosy for not running tournaments. Funny that some of the beneficiaries don't run tournaments either but for some reason they aren't critized for that? More irony I guess. Anyway don't worry when I run my own tournament I will keep in mind that I can be as uncouth as I want.

You do realize that you can NOT play in PDGA Sanctioned events right?
You might be out of PDGA Events for 5 years for playing at Savannah while suspended if past histories from the disciplinary committee are any indication.

As State Coordinator I'm asking that you do not put yourself in joepardy of not playing PDGA Events for a long time, or put any TD's of Sanctioned Events in jeopardy of losing their rights to TD Events by trying to play in them while suspended.

Thanks everyone for playing. Very smooth running this year, it definitely gets easier to run each year. Big thanks to Woody, Keith, Nathan, Wade, Chris & everyone else that helped out. Awesome food Gomez, and thanks Ian for helping cook. Terry from the Sullivan center came out & spoke @ the morning meeting, they seemed really appreciative of what we're doing. It sounded like the publix hookup (thanks Joey T.) worked/helped and they are getting a really big cash donation from that. I'll have our total up soon, is gonna be smaller than the past two years but should get the 3 year total over $5,000.

Total amount raised this year = $1,517 ... dropped the check off this morning! Thanks everyone for playing/donating/etc to make this event successful ... we raised almost as much $$ as in the past 2 years despite the recession. 3 year total is $5,200+. @ Joey -- I think the Publix thing worked indirectly as they were already talking to Publix and it sounds like they are making a big cash donation, so thanks much for that.

In other big news, Terry, the head of the Sullivan Center, is fully on board with getting a permanent course in the ground and wants to work with me to make it happen. He has great contacts with city council & the neighborhood and is a huge ally. He's also set on making the ice bowl into a major event in 2011 and beyond and can advertise to ATL corporate contacts. So look for a big event next year. More news on the course status as it comes ... next event @ the park is the Spring Forward Festival on March 27th; see the thread in Q&A forum.

Yeah Terry talked to us while we were waiting to tee off on 18 and seemed really excited about the course and the sport in general. A couple of the guys volunteered to come out and teach kids and he made a similar statement about getting the city behind the course as well.

It worked out good that he was hanging out right there because we brought a big box of toys and books and gave them directly to him.

Happy to hear and look forward to playing the course more often.Hopefully they do get it permanent cause its a great piece of land for disc golf.
