If you have played McCurry Park recently you may have asked yourself "whats up with the caution tape on the trees on hole 2?"

The county has approved the removal of those selected pines (7) and one from the tee area (in run-up) and has scheduled to complete the job this winter.

This will not affect the old route but will open up a new FAIRway and the hole in general.

12/10/09 The trees have been cut!

Ok I have been waiting a long time to let the cat out of the bag and now here goes. A bunch of stuff will be happening this year. I have been working on some improvements for McCurry and things are happening now.

Signs arrived yesterday to post on walking trails to inform park users that they are "entering disc golf area" and to "watch for flying discs". Signs will also be posted on the tees in these areas to tell "disc golfers yeild to pedestrians".

I have 8 sleeves that the county bought that will be used to add some alternate hole locations.

Some tweaking will take place as there are some issues, specificaly holes 12 and 15. 8 will have the long tee, played in the March 09 GSSS tourney, added as a permanant fixture (par 4) and 6 will be changed slightly to make the green more reachable (plays around 300'). These are the only major changes, all others will not involve changing the existing hole.

And the trees on hole 2 are still not cut but will be in a few weeks. Lightning has damaged some other larger trees in the park. Our trees will be done at the same time and that will be soon.

Concrete is supposed to be poured late this year and everything should be in place for next years GSSS event. (if keith has it here again)

I like that a couple of the changes have become new fixtures - the 8 and 14 tee areas. :mrgreen:

Is 6 going to stay on the slope but just moved right to make it closer (or HOPEFULLY) you are going to move the tee to the other side of the pathway junction and leave the basket where it is which would make the hole play better as well as take the path more out of play while leaving the OB road MORE in play.

Are 12 and 15 going to move "GSSS like" also, or some other ways? :shock:

I still like GSSS '09 2 better than "now 2" even if it has a few more tress cut (my opinion only) I liked the original version of number 2 (back in Feb 2007) better than any others so far, but it doesn't flow for Events to back track that far.

As of now with the cooperation Sheryl has always provided in the past, as well as yours, Wade's, JR's and Calcaterra's immense help on the course setup - along with my love of a 1085 ft hole with challenges involved, I am still planning on it being part of GSSS '10 - It probably will go back to Event #3 due to other arrainging, but that is still months away from being finalized.

6 will be left of the path with the basket where it is playing at its full potential. 12 will move basket to the left near slope and tee to the right. The angle of the hole will move about 45 degrees left and no chance of the road coming into play. Also once the trees on 2 are cut I think it will be pretty alright. I am looking at a tee a little further back and playing a par 4. Not for sure on that though. Gott get trees down first.

I'll have to visit 15 and see your idea for 2 before hand - I didn't think that moving 15 left would take the path and playground enough out of play, but I'm willing to look again.

I know which holes are which, but I figured a bad "beginner backhand" can make it from the island to the playground. On 16 it comes into play from anybody's bad shot to the left.

Remember I don't ever use 15's tee, and still like my 15 tee as only a really angry 500 foot drive can get to the playground. :wink:

Hole 2 is playing pretty good as a par 4. So far 1 tree "fell" :wink:

near the old tee and this opened up the lane to move the tee area back. The shot requires a drive through a 12' wide lane directly in front of the new tee area. It must carry through the lane about 150' (over the old tee), before it opens up to the left where there is a 100' clearing. Once the other 7 trees get cut out, a well placed drive here will face the second lane through the woods, a slow turn left-to-right for about 190' towards the green. Total distance ~440

Today I began clearing a path from hole 1 to the new tee for hole 2. This path will take players to the back of the tee, instead of walking up the fairway into oncoming traffic. Thanks to Keith for the idea! This will improve flow for the hole, which is starting to shape up nicely.

The path is finished and looking good. BIG thanks to Wade for helping out today! We looked at some new ideas and measured things with the wheel to get some info on paper. Alternate pins will be installed soon, and Steve, the P&R Maintenance head was out with a tree removal expert on hole 2 getting an estimate. It was a good day for progress.

McCurry hole length update:
• Hole 2 new long tee measures 425’
• Hole 4 new short pin measures 417’
• Hole 8 long tee (same tee used for GSSS #2 2009) to new short pin 443’
• Hole 8 original tee to new short pin 333’
• Hole 12 new tee (17’ to the right of the original tee) to the new and only pin 262’ (hole 12 now angles away from the road)

I think I am giving up on changing 15. The island tee causes too many shots to hyzer out into 16's tee area. This happens occasionally from the orignal tee, but less often. Keith, the GSSS tee is a good hole, but doesn't flow well from 14, especially in the new pin position. The biggest drawback is that "Tyler's Turn" (hole 15) was sponsored by the family of Tyler- a child with lukemia, and I do not want to eliminate it's "turning" character. So all things considered I think the best thing to do is leave it where it is. Play the GSSS however Keith wants, but I don't want to upset anyone.

There will be a meeting wednesday to mark the exact location for TEEPADS!!! They are going to go in over the next week or two. The county wants to get them in before it gets too cold.

Just doing the main set of tees. After that I will focus on marking the short layout.

Hole 2 will be the long par 4 tee. (there is already concrete for the short tee on this hole once the trees come out)
Hole 6 will be a shorter location than the orignal spot.
Hole 8 will be the longer par 4 location
Hole 12 will be the new location.

Hole 5 may be adjusted.
I will be finalizing everything in the morning.

Lots of people throw it across the road including myself - those are BAD SHOTS - it just means it shouldn't be permanent, not that it shouldn't be used at all. USDGC holes throw parallel to holes also, but that doesn't mean they aren't good holes.

I'm glad the GSSS has helped you in the quest to make things better there and again I'm looking forward to seeing it soon.

You do know I was kidding about concrete there right - smiley face and everything should have been a giveaway. :mrgreen:

11 is a good hole, it just needs some protection for the road. I think the most effective and quickest solution would be to put in a (somewhat mature) tree just in front and right of the pad. This will block shots from the direct line at the road and force shots to head down the left side. Also add a bit more difficulty to the tee shot making the par (4) more valid.

Waiting years for the tree to grow, however, is a big drawback.

Added a new short pin for 14 today. Distance = 283'
Nice green in this spot with plenty of interesting putting scenarios possible.

Also moved all the bricks from the tees to new locations marking the proposed rec tees. (probably not permanantly (yet))

9 - Same - Slightly forward (5')
10 - Same
11 - *New* On front edge of hill near path on left.
Safer par 3. Ditch plays at 250' + downhill. Pin = 390'
Alternate short pin likely to be added.
12 - Same as it is now (new to some folks but not locals)
13 - Same
14 - Same
15 - Same
16 - Same
17 - Same
18 - Same

Dimensions will be 5'x12'.
Exceptions- hole 6, 8-12 = 6'x10'
hole 14 = 6'x10'x8' trapezoid

Bricks have been moved to mark a short set of tees.
Shorts will be natural tees.
All holes will have a short tee except 6, 10, & 11
these distances will be posted when the tee markers are permanent.

Hole 5 will get a par 4 pin position at ~600'

these changes bring par to 57-58 (depending on where 5 is)

i saw the coarse yesterday, new changes look really good and IMO have brought McCurry def to the spot light as I fully enjoyed myself. 15... moved not moved??? I like the hole, hate the mando. Played from the island... (front of the bathrooms right?) loved it, but would rather just take out the mando. 14 ( I think... with new placement by the building ) i liked but at the same time missed the old green. Want to see the new 5 pin.. great idea. And liked seeing 4 moved back. Cant wait for the trees to come down on two.

Finally.. Andrew youre doing a great job sir!

We (locals) played the short set of tees today and they were really fun. Had to dial it back a bit though as short courses are not my forte. Also, new tee on 11 plays great IMO.

Donnie, 15 will stay the same. The Island looks good but shots come closer to 16's too frequently.
14 still has the old pin, just added new pin. Scores for the orignal pin do not spread out well as GSSS '09 carded only 2 birdies, 82 pars, and only 12 bogeys among the Pro/Adv players for the day. So, it's a good looking hole but the new pin should spread scores more. Saftey and scoring spread have been the main concerns for this redesign.

Look for more good stuff soon.

I liked the new teepads on holes 2, 6, 8 and 12. I always thought that 6 should be reachable by us guys who throw b/t 300-320. Hole 8 is a great par 4, I've been wanting to see that for a long time. Hole 12's new position is much more safety aware and is is a good hole.

Any word on the county removing those trees marked on hole 2?

Thanks Daniel. As for the trees they are on the radar but I believe they will have the concrete in first. The word I heard was the concrete was going in before it gets too cold. (thanks to that cold snap last week) The trees will probably be after that and the ultimate timeline is completion before the GSSS event in May.

Got some key stuff done today. Just a few more signs to move and the final layout will look finished. Of course there will be details to finish after that.

Hole 5 - added long pin (par 4) 600'
Hole 6 - moved sign to new tee location.
Hole 8 - moved sign to new tee location (par 4)

Played the course today and it is looking great! A lot less of those 3.5 holes and some true par 4's. I like 11 new length but I think it would serve better is the tee pad was moved 30-40 feet to the right. All in all it is looking really good and a lot more fun to play. Even though I didn't hit one birdie I did have multiple chances.

Teepads are going in NOW!

Today the crew broke ground on teepads for holes 9-12 and will frame 2 more and then pour concrete. 6 tees at a time and 3 loads of concrete and the job should be done by the end of next week!

In smaller news

New short pin installed on hole 18
moved some signs to the correct locations (one more to go, will be done tomarrow)

The big work is almost finished and then it's just little details (mando signs, sign info corrections etc.)

Holes 6, 8, 9, 10, and 11 are framed up, filled with crushed stone and ready for concrete. 1st pour will be monday morning and then tuesday will build the next 6 frames. These guys are getting it done super fast.

I also found out about a future (sometime soon) project that involves filling in the landfill depressions (sinking ground) at the top of the hill where 10's basket sits. That hole will have to be moved to a shorter location on the top of one of the ridges in order to not get burried by this project.

Once it it finished, I may put the orignal pin back in, but this comes up every 10 years or so. The short pin could be good if maybe I plant some stuff around it or something. It otherwise will be kinda weak. Still, it must be done.

THIS COURSE IS SO PHENOMINAL THAT IT IS RIGHT BEHIND WHITE OAK IMO!!! So close it's not even funny. I have not played some of the "premier" courses in the state but I have played a ton and this is number 2 in my books for sure. Where else can you go where you can choose either forehand or backhand off the tee and have a realistic shot to succeed at both?? Nowhere that I have played besides White Oak. Great mix of holes, great length, I will come back for sure!!! Maybe for dubs a few times. I shot 5 over. The improvements will be fantastic I am sure. Great job guys, truly a phenominal course.

Finished with the main course work today.

Moved 10 to a new short pin. Right, and in front of big pine.
Alternate long pin 10' back from orignal pin.
This was done because of the sinking ground around the orignal pin.

Added MANDO signs to holes 5, 13, 15, and 17.

Moved 13's sign to a better spot.

The right side trees on hole 4 have been cleared. :shock:

Planted a cypress on hole 5 to protect the playground. If it takes it will grow up to block the playground side route. (missed mando route)
Word is the trees on hole 2 will be cut next month.
The rest of the teepads should be done this week.

!!!!!THE TREES ON HOLE 2 HAVE BEEN CUT!!!!!
Finally hole 2 has a FAIRWAY! There are still lots of logs and stuff in the way so it's not cleaned up yet, but they are down. When I left the course today all but one were cut down. The guys were still working on hauling out some of the logs, and are leaving some smaller pieces to use for trails, stump seats, maybe a bridge for hole 8.

The last tree on hole 2 got cut down today. Wade and I used what we could to outline paths and the rest of them have been hauled away (for the most part). There is still a good bit of cleanup that will be done after the weekend, but there is a very nice fairway now. The short tee is a really good par 3 hole as well.

New alternate pin position on hole 2 installed today. Further back and tucked in to the left. Tough par 4 from the long tee = 470'. Plays really good from the shorter par 3 tee pad = 290'.

Also moved 15 to higher ground (it was in a sinkhole/puddle) and better framed shot. Only about 15' away from it's old home.

There are bricks laid on the ground that mark the short tees. (qualified by being not as long as the main tees :wink:

) Not very well marked yet, as I have not had time to focus on that yet. A few have gone missing. GSSS will use some of these but not all. You may find them on the following holes:

1 ahead, one brick left as of today
2 (concrete slab, par 3)
3
?4 if they are still there down hill to the right
?5 probably gone, was just to the right of the 2nd pine that lines the left side of fairway (look for a big root)
?7 definately missing, was on the right near road just before fairway starts uphill.
8 orignal tee (worn dirt spot)
9 near creek on the right
12 on right near road
13 straight ahead
14 on right near road
15 left, across path
16 ahead and left of main tee
17 ahead and slight left of orignal tee
18 obvious
