We gain 10 minutes or so each week until end of June so the time will back up as it always does every year as we gain more light, but at the beginning and end of every year it has always been the same.

What Ritger and Dollar fail to realize is that Wills actually is NOT a private disc golf course.

There are these paths which strangely enough people walk on which slows things down alot at times.

Just show up and we'll play it by ear like we always do.

I'll be there from 4:45 ish on to take money and names, so whoever is there can play, and whoever isn't doesn't, and I'll just throw discs myself. I'm just glad we get extra weeks of daylight to play golf.

I just won't start at a time where we'll have to finish in the twilight or dark as when you finish in the dark it SUCKS!

This is a bit embarassing to admit, but I just looked at the map, and realized I work about 5 minutes from this park (pass the Ferrari dealership on my way to lunch several days a week), though I've never played it. Until April, my old job, which was well inside the Perimeter, made it difficult to reach any of the metro courses in time for this type of weekday event. That made me give up on trying, and I've got a whole host of excuses for not staying engaged with DG through the summer while adjusting to my new job. While I still live almost 30 minutes from Wills Park, I could be at the park at 5:15pm every day if I were son inclined.

What I want to know is would the next Wed. night doubles be a good way to introduce myself to the course? I'm what you'd call a recreational player,maybe 15 over par at East Roswell, maybe 10 over at Redan, so if this is a competitive event where you'll be offended when I don't make putts from 70 feet, or when I don't drive it 400 feet uphill, I may just come play the course on my own for a while, and try to work myself into better form.

I like the course pretty good, but a few of the holes seem to psyche me out before i even get to them. 12- 14 I play decent until that point, but i did birdie 14 this past Saturday! I understand y'all like to have new people come out, but I don't want to crash a ringer party with my mediocre skills.

Some are, some aren't, but either way it is NOT a casual game at Wills doubles.
Come out, throw a round early (there is usually several players playing before dubs) and say hello, worse case scenario is you get to see other people play and maybe learn something new. I've been playing for over 13 yearts and I still see shots on Wednesday nights I haven't seen elsewhere before (especially if Forrest is there )

If you don't like the doubles atmosphere, you can still always play the course whenever you want anyways.

Wills park was my first attempt at blind draw doubles. Many people told me to come on out and try so I did. Everyone was nice, yet very competitive. I had a great round as three of the players in my group all threw side arm, something I wanted to learn. I was very nervous because I didn't want to show them just how barney I was. After a few holes, they knew they had a barney. When the round end, I realized that I needed to practice for a few more months. Now, blind draw doubles are usually more fun then a tourney (unless it's Lake Russell) because it's more casual, you can draw an awesome player as a partner, get a chance to win some money, but still get a chance work on your game and get some sound advice......which is worth the buy in alone!

Casual or not, if you want to play you should. It doesn't matter what the other people think. We all started somewhere, you'll never get any better if you don't get out there and learn from players with greater skill levels. I say go and if anyone gripes tell them that you're friends with Bootsie.

Thanks for the advice, folks. It's enough fun playing by myself that I don't feel the need to crash your doubles match. But while I have your attention, I would like a bit of advice. Is there a consensus of how to play your drives on #12 and #13? I find myself relying mostly on luck on those two holes. Also, is there a polite way to get the pedestrians on the #16 sidewalk to yield to my disc? I keep F***ing up my drives on that hole because I'm afraid of bashing somebody's head in.

You missed a week. I only know cause I was there.

I have a theory, and it may be totally off, but I am finding that there are more people that are starting to play disc golf and everyone seems to be encouraging those new people to play doubles. It is a good place to start getting into tournament play and a good way to play with better people to enhance your skills.

HOWEVER, it also makes those pros, advanced and old school playas that look to doubles as a way to try and pick up some spending cash, not want to come out as much when they know that they might get partnered up with Joe Barney who hasn't been playing 2 months and was told to come out to doubles.

Wills is, and has always been, known as a place that old school players, pros and advanced players gather. It is a tough place to compete and you need to be good and have a decent partner. New players come and get discouraged and may not come back, PROs come and see who is there and may or may not want to throw their money away for lack of a better way of saying it.

Some doubles are beginner friendly, some not, I would not advise any player below INT to go to Wills, however, REC players could go to ERP and some other doubles and not have as much of a problem fitting in and contributing.

......Then again it might just be end of school, beginning of summer, people going to PERK to practice, or just a lack of time and money, but its all just a guess unless you START A POLL to find out!! PLEASE DONT THOUGH

I think that Grease is making a general overall statement. Deerlick doubles are down, Will's are down, Central's are way down too. There are more and more people playing disc golf and less going to dubs. So why are more people playing casually and fewer playing doubles?

We are talking about this at Central - trying to figure out why the numbers are dropping. I venture a guess that it is not any one thing but the fact that there is so much action all over the place, many more tournaments available, and the economy being down. It's just too much for our little DG community to support at this place in time under the circumstances (IMO).

Yes I feel the same. Courses are becoming convenient too. Why would you drive around town for a little action when its around the corner? Just wait, the Alex will diminish things further. Then another ERP style course near White Oak, no more westsiders to the north/east/south side of town. What about RDGC's next possible installment on Roswell's West side? And I'm sure I have no idea about the three other course planned somewhere.? We may see a drop in the years to come. I see a bright future though. Give a few years to foster new talent in the local areas and badabang, new action.

What newer player wants to donate 15 to 20 bucks to play with more experienced players? Donating 5 to 10 bucks is not as big a deal.

As an "Intermediate" level player, I think this is the crux of it here. Unless I'm really hot, I'm going to be one of the weakest links out there at Wills doubles, and while I'm not worried about embarrassing myself or pissing off whatever partner I'm paired with, I'm usually less likely than anybody else there to score in the money. That means the $15 feels mostly like a donation to Keith or whoever happens to be on that day, and $15 is a bit steep for me to spend on a weekly basis when I know I could be playing for free or buying a disc with my $15. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the company and the experience, but I think dropping the entry fee to around $10 could bring down some barriers to the less dominant players who don't want to make as big a "donation," as well as lessen the blow of getting paired with a lowly "Barney" for a highly rated player. This isn't my feeling alone. I've spoken to several "rec" and "intermediate" type players I've met at Wills who simply don't feel up to the level of competition to put $15 on the super-small chance of scoring last cash. So if you want to swell the numbers and don't mind watering down the skill level, you could probably tap the "intermediate" market by dropping the entry fee. If you want to swell the numbers but keep the level of skill up, I'm not really sure what to advise, since I don't identify with the experience of the more dominant "advanced" and "pro" level players, and can't say with any confidence why they may not be coming.

An Ace on 7 is more difficult than 18 down at Wills - especially when both players are rated over 1010.

18 down has been done several times at Wills just in the 4&1/2 years I've been here - including by Brett Porter who has done it a couple of times with different partners.

Plus 7 has only been aced a few times total, and Ryan made $270 more than Brad and Geoff each got for first.

So I'd have to give a Hot Sauce to the Ace and a Spicy Mild Sauce to the 18 down.

I put my shot 12 ft left and say the light is green for the Ace run Boots.
Bootsie steps up and floats his disc slightly left to right for the entire flight and all 5 of us in the group (2 teams and odddog) know it's in from about 100 feet out.

Wills is definately not for the impatient discers during nice weather, but sometimes waiting has it's benefits with the occasional eye candy making you wait.
The campers are only there during the summer where they use the ENTIRE area around the Equestrian Center which includes holes 1-4 - no big deal really as we just play the other holes first and finish there (when there are less scouts or nobody left) and which is right next to the parking lot.

Eagle scout project was in 2005 right before I moved here and it was to put in tee signs and markers -did a good job even though a couple were not really tee areas for the Wills golfers.

Cam, Brad for sure, and possibly Phil all started at Wills!

And if you can putt on the Mach2 baskets you can (should be able to) putt on anything.

Posting this here in addition to the "Tee Boxes" thread as we need volunteers to help build the frames next Wednesday 18-AUG instead of playing dubs that night...

We're now in sync with the Scouts, the City and the Arboretum on the redesign proposal, which must go through the same approval process that the 6-pad Eagle project has already cleared. As this phase is already in motion, it's time for us to jump on board and support Bobby Cookson's Eagle project. We'll be meeting again tomorrow with all parties to finalize the holes that will get the first six pads, which will hopefully be the ones that do not change in our redesign.

Here's what we need now from the Disc Golf community:

Volunteers on Wednesday, 18-August at 5:00 pm to help build frames - instead of playing dubs that night
Volunteers on Saturday, 21-August at 8:30 am to help with the concrete pour - wheelbarrows also welcome that day
Cooperation with the Scouts (especially Bobby, who is the Project Manager), the City and the Arboretum by keeping the work areas clear and playing around them until the pads are completed

Times will be as in the past few years - earlier and hard starts during the first and last few weeks with gradual expansion and contraction during the season as we gain and then lose the daylight.

Come out and see the new baskets, concrete teepads and no waiting Wills Park - if time played is shorter due to all the changes, we will start later -just want to be sure we finish in the daylight.

I didn't say it wasn't funny - Mr. Henley and I have an understanding about our posts between each other - Daniel May and others (Fish and Pig guy being the most flamboyant) have their fun with the colorful large words also - My post was mainly for all the others out there who don't know any better - GSSS is less than 1/10 of what I'm involved in with Disc Golf on a yearly basis.

Why the change in starting points? The parking lot by the Rec Center is way smaller and as the weather warms up, will be much more difficult to park in. Further, traffic back up from the intersection with Rucker, making it more difficult to enter/exit. Why not keep the same starting point that has been used for years, since it allows for entry/exit from 2 different areas and we never have issues with a full parking lot?

Example: Hole 3 creek and beyond was o/b for the tourney but does Wednesday dubs do that? Is every creek and beyond O/B. It would of been awesome to list the o/b on each tee sign.

I used the creek and beyond in the Event because when beyond the creek you are in another fairway, which impedes Event flow and speed of play as all holes all filled at the same time.

For doubles it has has been and continues to be only surrounded by water. We have talked of making BEYOND the path OB on 17 to protect against people just throwing towards the path with no consequences, and we are putting it to a vote/ discussion this WED 3/23 before the start of dubs.

The reason it is not listed as OB on the tees signs is that 99% of the people that play there don't consider it ever OB - and then for Event play and doubles it has different rules each time, so it's easier to just show the creek and let people play it as they wish as each time you go there the creek is diffent widths, depths or not there at all in dry times.

There were 10-12 others playing when we were there, including Tokio and Tim, and players I've returned discs to - but they are either there before we start or 5 minutes after we start.

Here is a unusual scenario for a dubs playoff tonight. My teammate and me are informed we are in a playoff for $20 and do we want to split 5 each or go play some more golf. We choose split so everyone wins something. I go to get a found lost disc from my vehicle to turn in to TD and then we are informed when now have another team joining the playoff. So all three team go to hole 1 with the first team that had taken the split now being eliminated. We go to hole 2 the other team throws a bad shot right a bad shot left, my parkner throws a sweet drive which everyone think is under or very close to the basket, I then throw a bad shot right. We all walk down the fairway I pick up my drive we find the three shots the other team can only get a par 3, and when we reach my partners throw it has scooted behind the basket in the water. We then choose to just got back and do a upshot 3, instead of putting circle 3. As soon as we throw our shots, one player from the other team comes quickly to tell us we have lost..not t show sportsmanship or try and help.. but only thinking with what scenario is going on in his mind so he can win. He say you guys pick up and re-teed and are out of playoff. My partner is like what what the hell ? Why try to make us have a rule penalty to for you to win? I'm like why not show sportsmanship and tell us to make or circle 3 putt behind the basket to continue the playoff, if you think we are going to re-tee why not say something or if we did any shots fairway/tee just say putt the circle3. After the other team realizing we just went to play out our 3 out from my shot, my team is just willing to give whatever one of the players on the other team wanted so bad (the other guy on the team was like..umm I don't know what's going on). There is some goofy things these days at the local action. If a experienced player goes to make a mistake people most likely remind of the correction, if a inexperienced player goes to make a mistake people most likely try to explain the correct way to go about things... not try to take advantage of them. Otherwise before all this was a great time tonight on our card with our team and the team of Plotky and his partner Kade who got a SWEET ACE!

See me I would have kept playing off. I would mark my lie tell whoever and if my partner happened to be worse off turn around walk back to my mark and play from there. One because I never cheat and play fair if I wanted to be legal I would have left my minnie not a stick or something then playing by the rules, but this is wednesday doubles not that serious people. It wouldn't be playing to any advantage they would finish the hole and if they tied or beat you do whatever.

I believe this "Bootsie" character makes some valid/invalid points and I would like to express my views on this subject if the board permits. I've been around the game/sport for a while and have picked up a few lessons from some "Central" and "Redan" dogs along the way regarding playoffs and any action that requires more than 2 shims. Taking into account some of their rules and PDGA sanctioned regulations there are 3 specific ways that playoffs can be legitimately settled:

1) Once any action concludes and if 2 teams are tied the action will be settled by the flipping of a disc. This disc has to be either a 200 gram Zephyr or 136 gram Pegasus (purple). The Zephyr can be of any color (pink preferred). No other invalid substitutes will be allowed. If either team or tournament director cannot supply these mythical discs then both teams forfeit the shims. These shims will be added to the roller ace fund. This fund is only won if someone rolls in an ace in any future doubles events at that particular course.

2) The second way any double's playoff action can be settled is by a simple glow round 4 hours after the last card is turned in with starting rounds no earlier then 12am. This type of glow action is not for the faint of heart. Unlike other glow rounds that usually have glow sticks marking the fairway and baskets, this glow action will not. It is important when starting the evening round that one should take notes on where each basket lies and what would be the best plan to maximize penthouses. Once the round concludes the action is over. Once again, unlike a regular round the winner will be decided by which team has lost the least amount of discs not their actual score. For example, if Team A loses 14 discs and shoots a +4* while Team B loses 22 discs and shoots a +3, Team A wins.

3) The 3rd and final way a playoff can be determined is quite simple. In 1972, men by the names of John Stalberger and Mike Marshall invented a genius game and shortly after in 1992 the game was mastered by O. Arenlout and P. Arenlout. This game involves intelligence, whit, perseverance and most important, incredible athletic physique. The game: Hacky Sack. Teams of 2 will attempt to "hack" a total of 10 times back and forth. The first to complete this will win....plain and simple.

I've been playing weekly doubles and various other forms of local action for almost three decades now. I'm tired of seeing sudden death playoffs every time two or more groups are tied at the end of regulation play. I think we should at least consider some of the good ideas that Invalid Lettuce has suggested. I really like his idea of playing a glow round four hours after the last card is submitted. Back in the day, I used to play night golf all the time. And we didn't even have the luxury of using glow sticks or lighted baskets and fairways. I threw some of my greatest shots in the dark. If you ever want to significantly improve your game, I highly suggest that you round up your friends and play about 36 holes in the pitch-black dark. Blindfolded action offers the same benefits.

I've been thinking about the idea of having a roller ace fund for years. Ask yourself how many times your efforts have not been rewarded properly when your roller stood up perfectly and jumped into the bucket. Too many to count, right? Considering the purity of skill involved in roller aces, they should really be compensated at least twice as much as traditional aces. Just think about how many twigs, rocks, and pine cones you have to miss in order to throw a perfect roller. I actually started a roller league in the metro area for those of us who don't subscribe to the whole notion of discs flying in the air. We still have a bunch of promo gear with our anti-flight logo, so let me know if you're interested in supporting the cause.

Flipping a disc is a solid playoff strategy, but I foresee too many tournament officials lacking the necessary equipment. We used to employ a similar game back in the 80's called Flip Dog. One team would pick heads or tails, then the other team would throw a long-distance roller. Hacky Sacking to determine winners sounds like fun, but I'm pro-choice when it comes to deciding which game is best for the players. Why should one or two people be afforded the right to decide everyone else's fate? The players should all come to a mutual agreement on the game used in a playoff, just to reduce controversy and liability issues. I'll never forget when a good friend of mine was forced into a bat fight with someone he tied in a skins match.

I know with most of us "golfers", the middle of October brings some feelings of uncertainty, emptiness and possible frustration. Such questions may arise as, "What will I do with my Wednesdays from 5:00pm till 8:45pm?" or "Should I scooby or shimee this 500 foot roller?" or "Should I stop calling Adam Johnson "Bootsie" or should I refer to him as "Boothead"?" Don't worry my homies, these types of questions are normal and should handled with reason and courage. With 30 years of disc golf under my my belt I have "been there and done that." My solution this time of year is to start up my annual "Glow Golf Doubles Extravaganza", sponsored by Kinkos. Kinkos have been a dedicated sponsor for the past few years and are willing to, once again, sponsor this local action which is taking over the disc golf nation under par. Unlike normal Glow Golf, local "Glow Golf Doubles Extravaganza" consists of 3 simple rules:

1) Each player is allowed 1 disc. This may include a putter or driver. A disc may not include a glow stick or anything that lights up the disc. This disc must be an authentic glow disc. An authentic glow disc is one that needs at least 3 hours under a lamp or some sort of lighting that causes the disc to glow in the dark. 2) If by chance a player is bitten by a snake. That player and his partner win. The winnings will be split 70/30 with the player bitten receiving 70% of the winnings. No questions asked.

This means, if on the last hole your team is -12 under and the team next on the tee is -12 your best bet might be calling for an audible 4 to sike out your opponent and let them birdie. This type of skill is crucial when trying to solidify a win.

To Sadj's dismay the bar he bit into was a delicious, but sometimes lethal PayDay. Long story short, Sadj had to end his round with a 999. So, if everyone could keep this in mind everyone would appreciate it.

I apologize if I posted the incorrect dollar amounts. Was trying to clarify all of that with Chris F. and Wes when everyone was dispersing because of the rain.
